Two Country Day students explain how Model UN teaches them to negotiate like real delegates and see the world from other countries' perspectives. One spent three years in the club researching topics and seeking agreements. She also went to France and the Netherlands for a conference called Paths to Peace.
Country Day is a very global school, I think, and tries to give you opportunities to grow in many different ways.
I think part of character education is to develop that empathy and sympathy and to look at the world through someone else's eyes. The Model UN is a student club that offers these students an opportunity to simulate what the real United Nations does. Since they represent a delegate and they research and topic and they present and look for negotiation and look for agreement.
I've been a part of Model UN for 3 years. I've learned that it's not only United States of America that's happening there, there's an entire world, and I've learned a lot more about, you know, different cultures and different ways of life. With Country Day, I got to go on an exchange to France and the Netherlands called Paths to Peace. There we went on an international conference. You have to think about everybody and not just what your country or your I kind of felt like I stepped out of my shoes and walked in someone else's.
