A high school senior talks about pursuing an independent genetics study with her teacher Mr. Peery. Country Day School has rare advanced lab equipment most high schools don't have, and lets her take three science classes to explore her interests without worrying about cost.
I want to be a surgeon. I want to be a researcher. I don't know, I just want to go into science somewhere.
I'm basically treating Grace like she is one of my, you know, undergrad students doing a thesis.
Last year I came to Mr. Peery and I basically said I'm really interested in genetics and knew that I wanted to do some independent study that was exploring science and Something new and interesting, but I had no idea what that was.
Having this amount of gear and this level of gear is very unusual for a high school. So most of the science teacher conferences I go to, how much does this cost? How much does this cost? We don't have to ask that at Country Day, which is really nice. This builds upon her passion for science, but she's also been able to do independent research at the high school level, which is a pretty rare thing. It's really great that we're able to accommodate her here at Country Day.
And it's been awesome that at Country Day I've been able to manipulate my curriculum so that as a senior right now I'm taking 3 science classes, which is what I'm passionate about. I'm able to really discover what I love.
