Kim Gaskill found a ridiculous pancake machine at a hotel breakfast in Flagstaff and turned it into a lesson about entrepreneurship. The point: new gadgets and trends are fun, but don't let them pull you away from what actually works.

Good morning! It is a beautiful day here in Flagstaff, Arizona. I'm Kim Gaskill and this is the Daily Spark. Have you ever traveled and stayed in not the best hotel, not a fleabag, but just middle of the line, no frills, clean, safe a bed and a shower, and that's about it. I do that quite often because a lot of times I'm only sleeping for a few hours. I don't need all those frills. Sometimes though, they're nice. The hotel that we stayed in last night, it was great. There weren't a lot of frills. But it was comfortable, it was clean, it was safe. And when we got up for breakfast, they had the continental breakfast. We weren't going to eat breakfast, we were just going to get on the road. We've been eating a little bit too much, to be honest. And so we get out and load everything up in the car, and as we walked by the little bar in the front where they did the continental breakfast, we noticed this little machine and it said It was a pancake machine. Now, I had never seen one of these before. And you know when the pizzas come out of those conveyor belt ovens and they come down off of that little roller? Well, that's what this old pancake machine was like. And you push a button, it makes a pancake for you, it spits it out across that roller onto a plate. And I thought, we really need to try this. But we didn't. And it got me thinking, are there things that you see or that you come across that spark your interest like that and you try them just because they're a novelty or just because they're a trend or just because it's the current buzzword? Are you finding yourself jumping on every new, cool, different thing, or are you sticking with traditions and safe bets and knowing what works and comfort? There needs to be a good balance of that. You have to take chances as an entrepreneur. You have to get out there and try new things, but you don't have to do everything everything. You don't have to try that gadgety pancake thing. If you know you're eating too much and you're not doing breakfast, stick to what you say you're going to do or not do and bypass that. There'll be another one somewhere down the road, something cool to try out, and it'll be the right time. But today was not that time. Join me again tomorrow for another Daily Spark.
