This is a YouTube video titled "029 attentive pigeon crossing the road" (Daily Spark) featuring Kim Gaskill speaking from Tempe, Arizona in a short monologue recorded on 2019-04-30. Kim recounts an amusing anecdote about a pigeon obeying a crosswalk signal, uses it to encourage pedestrian attentiveness and safety (especially in busy parking lots/holiday shopping), and signs off promising another Daily Spark tomorrow.

Good morning from Tempe, Arizona. I'm Kim Gaskill and this is the Daily Spark. I had to laugh this morning. I pulled up to an intersection at a red light, stopped there, and as I'm waiting for the light to turn, I notice a pigeon walking down the sidewalk. And the pigeon came up to the intersection stopped at the curb of the sidewalk, kind of looked around a little bit, and then proceeded into the crosswalk to cross in front of me. And I just started cracking up. I thought that was hilarious. He actually— I'm thinking to myself, he actually does better than most people do when they come to an intersection. He looked around before he stepped off the curb and crossed into the crosswalk. Now, it was actually the white hand, the white person, so it was, it was his turn to cross, which most people go across the light and do it when there's a red hand saying don't walk. But it just struck me so funny that this pigeon was paying so much attention to the rules And so he steps off the curb, he walks across the— through the crosswalk there. But you have to remember, the crosswalk lights are timed for people. So I don't know how many seconds they are, but they're designed to give people enough time to cross to the other side. But this pigeon has those little tiny legs. So he got about halfway and it changed. And he was a no walk signal, and here comes the turning traffic. My light hadn't changed yet, but the turning traffic was coming in, and they would have totally just nailed that bird. But he stopped. He stopped right in the center and waited for those cars to turn, and then he continued to the other side of the street. I have to say, I chuckled for quite a while. And I thought to myself, if people could only be so attentive and pay that much attention to the traffic signals, the crosswalks, walking across parking lots. So my challenge to you today is don't be one of those people. Be like the pigeon. Look around, take a moment before you cross. There's a lot of people out doing holiday shopping right now, so the parking lots are crazy. Time it where you walk across with a group. Don't make all the cars wait for every single person to cross individually. And pay attention when you cross the street. Take it from the pigeon. Be safe. I'll catch you again tomorrow for another Daily Spark.
