George Wilding Salon48 Brewhouse Bath Weds 27th Feb 2019

The recording captures a live acoustic set by singer‑songwriter George Wilding at the Salon48 Brewhouse in Bath on February 27, 2019. The performance opens with Wilding’s original song “Ice Talk,” followed by a brief discussion of his openness to audience requests. He then introduces and performs several of his own compositions—“Blue in the Morning,” “The World Is a Slur,” and “Cheese Cell Shell Shock”—providing personal anecdotes about each song’s age, emotional tone, and the circumstances of their creation. A cover of Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” is played in response to a request from a listener named Jessica. Throughout the set, Wilding and his collaborator Sylvia exchange spoken interludes, respond to audience comments, and discuss technical details such as tuning and instrument choices (e.g., tambourine, different tunings). The artist reflects on his background, noting he was born in Bath and usually plays in busy pubs where upbeat covers dominate, making this slower, narrative‑driven set a rare opportunity. The session concludes with thanks to the audience, a brief promotion of his CDs and online presence, and a final acknowledgment of the venue’s hospitality.

All right, as I said, yeah, I'm like open to requests and stuff, so anything you guys want to hear. But I'll start with one of mine, it's called Ice Talk. I hope you enjoy. Sorry, it's nice to like get the blood pumping, play that one first, but every time I play I do realize more and more I do need to get to the gym at some point. I figure I'll play a cover. Yeah, yeah, we will do that. It's like our best Eric Burdon impression. Apologies in advance for that.
Well, there is a house in New Orleans that crows the rise hillside. When it's bound to ruin, I've many a poor boy we've got to run away.
My mother was a tailor. She served my new clergy. My father was a gambling man.
You.
Now the only thing countin' is the succession of Trump.
Why the only Time that he is satisfied is what is how the song goes. Miser— in the house of the Ashen.
Now I go on her own, a bit of fun. One curve around the stretch, one curve back, see where I'll leave.
Wow, cool.
So I think the way we do this is me and Sylvia are going to like swap and change that. So I'll play, I'll play one more. Is that, that all right? And then, and then we'll swap and change. Um, I was going to play the oldest song I wrote that I still, like, play live because it's kind of, like, found its way back into the set because it's almost 10 years old, which is pretty fucking terrifying for me. But it's not 10 years old yet, and I won't get to tell that anecdote, you know, for the next 2 years. So I'm going to play the newest one I wrote instead. They're both fucking depressing, so it won't make a lot of difference. It's called Blue in the Morning.
Wasted on a beach. Why don't you live? Watch you freak. Now you've changed your tune. I've been blue like a moonshiny drink. If you're sinking, feeling sweet, then you awake. Always a bad word to say, but that's just You, it's okay by me too, 'cause I'm lost without you. I've taken too much pills, overkill. By the moonshine you're drinking while his left hand keeps on keeping me at bay. Always a clever word to say, but that's so easy when you're this out of touch. 'Cause there's brains by the bunch growing on trees. Now you change that tune, but I've been blue like the moonshine I'm drinking while you're wrestling the plaster from my crutch. I'll use a crutch to keep me steady while you pull the rug from under my feet. And I just go wide as a sheet.
Shouldn't have ended on such a sad note. I don't know why I waited, because I was only just going to chat for a bit. Uh, yeah, so hello again. The next time I do track, I'll just be on the tambourine. Uh, actually, I'm not going to start on it because, uh, I noticed I've forgotten things a couple of say a little bit about the song and what it means to you and stuff, but it's just a lot of bubbles.
Can you see the land of beauty from—
Thank you, baby. All right, we'll try on, um, we'll try on a cool Daisy James From a couple of years ago.
No one catches her wedding dress like a ghost haunting our wedding coat. She is patient at the priest like a pretty red favor.
Shine until she disappears.
Her intuition will die with the sun in the horizon. Snow-based surprises, she don't seem to mind.
She must know what she's doing. Where she's keeping.
She must know what she does.
She knows it's just a tongue drum that is near the throat of a finger drum machine. We never know again how the love is just a rock of steps for someone younger and it drops us off in a wall.
Take me away.
There's a chill in the smoke.
We even got a little extra note in there somewhere.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
This is really beautiful in here, by the way. Thank you so much for listening, and thanks for having me. I was actually born in Bath, so— yeah, I don't know, it's nice to be back. I usually don't get an opportunity to play the slower songs or stories or narrative sort of things as much because I play in a lot of busy pubs where people want to hear Wonderwall quite a lot of the time. So thank you for the opportunity. I'm going to play one called The World Is a Slur, and I hope you enjoy it. Yeah, this is years old actually, but I must have only played it like twice for people ever.
I can't explain. I've just been feeling miles away. My dreams are dust settling on your last bag of throw-in. I'm out to sea and I can't help but stare from where Ground sinking in my chair, and your eyes were there. They were like bleach, deep and dangerous, drenched in damage done. Overheld there, staring back. My mind is a mess from the hours I spent Going through all the songs you were into when we were young. My brains are blown from all that twisting, turning, thinking. Your eyes are a lantern, deep and dangerous, drenched in damage. And hope that they're not drenched for me, 'cause I know soon you'll be sentenced to a lifetime of being objected to. Someone else's bad impressions of Katya in the right nostril.
Thought I was in the clear. Fuck's sake.
But thank you very much.
I'll see you in a little bit. Guys, sorry, wasn't my intention. Thank you. This one, this, this is my last set tonight, and this is called Cheese Cell Shell Shock. Much to my own detriment a lot of the time, so wish me luck.
What do you see?
I put you out there. I think you think it's better than a plastic stamp, but I don't care. I hope that you step the wide-eyed.
Once there were none. Once there were three.
So I had a request from Jessica. Jessica invited me to come and play, so I should play. Well, I'll never play that well. But I love playing it anyway. This is an old Bob Dylan song called "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right." Roosting crows at the break of dawn.
Look out your window, I'll be gone.
You're the reason I am traveling on.
Only twice you saw me in the woods until you knocked your light out. That light I'm on the dark side of the road. I wish that there was something you would do or say to try and make me change my mind and stay. Hell, we never did too much talking anyway. Only twice as sorry. There ain't no use in calling out my name, girl, like you never did before.
There ain't no use in calling out my name, would no good.
Can't hear you anymore. I'm thinking and wondering, walking down the road. I once loved a woman, a child, I'm told. I gave her my heart, she wanted my soul. Don't make twice the sore. Walking down a long, long, long road, and where I'm bound, I can't tell. Goodbye, sweet sugar worker. I guess I'll see you for a while. I'm not saying you've treated me unkindly. You could have done better, but I don't mind. It's just you can't waste it all, my precious time. Don't think twice, it's all right. Don't think twice, it's all right.
All right, the last one's in another tuning, which Which is always my favorite bit of the gig.
And the song is called—
I also used to try and talk while I tuned, but we were like honestly a fucking hour too late.
Stop looking at me.
You thought we were so entertaining.
You told us to shut our eyes.
Oh, that was a good call, actually.
I'll know for next time. Thank you so much for listening. I've got some CDs and stuff if anyone's interested, but you can just find me online and like, you know, we'll the likes and everything. I really appreciate it, cuz— oh, it feels so horrible saying it, cuz I'm like really awkward about that shit, cuz I don't really believe in it. But I've been told that I need the likes to progress, so I'm working on that, getting better. But thank you so much for listening. It's lovely to meet you all, and I'll hopefully see you soon. This could be one more time for me. Sweetheart.
Lay me down to sleep in my mansion. Pour me my water and pass me my meds. When I close my eyes, I can hear all the ramblings of all of the strange folks that live in my head. Turn the lights on one more time for me, sweetheart. Just need to check everything's in its place. Up by my stairs, I'm a beautiful person. And I thought you were telling me I'm a To the same track I live, my hero, yet I Heart.
With some of those high notes tonight. I need to bust me tighter jeans.
Thank you.
Time for one more. Sorry, yeah, do another one.
Come on.
I'm in a different tuning, that's the trouble.
Damn, I'm really sorry.
Sorry, really sweet though.
Thank you.
