An artist works through a five-foot commissioned painting with a bold orange base and long shadows across a field. The horizon sits on the golden section where the sun will land, a rare choice for him. Next he's masking off the horizon to develop an epic sky.

So I've been working on my big 5-foot commission today, actually really enjoying it. It's— I tend to start my paintings by amping everything up, so this orange is particularly epic at the moment. You can see I'm getting the basic composition in, and the idea is that there will be some illumination on the tops of the trees, casting some long shadows over the fields. That's the idea. I've got the horizon there. The horizon actually is going to be pretty close to the golden section. I think the sun, the sun itself is actually going to sit on the golden section. I don't actually usually use the golden section, but it just Yeah, it came very close in this case, so I thought, why not? And then this is the sort of half-size sketch— well, actually, it's a bit bigger than half-size— that I did to sort of explore how that one's going to become. The hedgerows in this are just invented. But actually quite close to the finished version, which is here. So yeah, so the idea really is to— I've got to work on the— there's kind of been like a kind of more like a pale blue kind of tinge to the trees on the horizon. And then we've got Lyme Regis and Morecambe Lake. Once I've sort of masked— put that in, I'm going to mask off the horizon and work on the sky, which is going to be quite epic. So yeah, that's what I'm working on today.
