Kathryn Maple's paintings at Bolee and Workman use muted color and grid lines layered with figures. Large canvases like Mimu, roughly 10 by 6 feet, feel overwhelming up close. The lighting shifts how you see texture and color across works like Night Walk Home and Amongst the Willows.
So yeah, back at Bowley Workman last weekend of this exhibition. It's interesting because the light, the light is really different today. Colors seem to be different. So some of these grids seem to be under the figures. And then others are drawn around the figures. It's very muted palette. And this one here looks a lot brighter than when I was last here. Green man. Let's have a look around here. Quite a dark one. What's that one called? Night Walk Home. Obviously meant to be dark. It's interesting, all these textures underneath the paint. Great space. You can see this one is Amongst the Willows. Very textural. Her drawings also very intense. And this big one is Mimu. Something I quite like about large paintings is how they slightly overwhelm and intimidate, even if it's real-life subject matter. It's something nice about almost not being able to get as close as you'd like. What is this? Oil on canvas, 3 meters by 193, 10 meters by 6 foot, 10 foot by 6 foot.
