The view from Bulbarrow Hill, oil on canvas, 120x60cm

In this video, artist Kit Glaisyer walks viewers through his latest 120 × 60 cm oil painting of Bulbarrow Hill in Dorset, a looser follow‑up to an earlier commission of the same ancient hill‑fort. He describes the composition—layers of hedgerows, woods, fields receding to a horizon under May skies with dramatic clouds and a bright setting sun—and explains that he waited several weeks for the exact light he wanted to capture. After a 45‑minute drive to the site, he spent hours photographing, sketching, and taking notes. Back in the studio he creates collaged reference images in Photoshop, an “augmented reality” but still reality‑based guide. The painting itself focuses on mark‑making, color interaction, and the sensation of responding to a specific natural moment, emphasizing the joy of the painting process and appreciation of fleeting light.
