In this instructional video, Kevin L. Horne emphasizes that proper fit is essential for a classic navy suit. He demonstrates the fit of a dress shirt, explaining the "finger rule" for collar comfort and confirming that sleeves and shoulders are correct. He then points out that the shirt’s body has excess fabric, causing billowing over the waistband when tucked, which leads to a messy appearance under the suit jacket. When he puts on the jacket, he shows how the shirt’s bulk creates gathering in the back and pulls on the jacket when fastened. He also highlights that the suit pants are too tight, evident from the pockets bulging outward. Throughout, Kevin advises that these issues signal the need for tailoring to achieve a proper fit.

Hey there, family. Now listen, this is why we say that fit is everything. Now, this is a new dress shirt. I bought it a couple winters ago, but I never had it on. Now, the rule is, as far as the collar is concerned, if I can stick 1 finger to 2 fingers inside the collar comfortably, it's a good fit. So we're good there with the collar. The sleeves are good. Right? Looking in the mirror, the shoulders are great. Right there, it looks fine. Right? Now here's the issue. Look at the body. The body of this shirt is too much. It's too much fabric. This is a problem. It's too much. Again, fit is everything. Now watch this. I'm going to attempt to tuck this shirt in. This suit is a tad small. The suit should be let out, but the dress shirt doesn't help out either. Watch this. Suck it in, bro. Suck it in. There you go. There you go. You see how that shirt, the fabric is billowing over top of the waistband? It's too much. It's too much. It has to be cut down. Now watch what happens when I put the suit jacket, when I attempt to put the suit jacket on top. Again, this suit is a tad small, but still, watch this. It fits fine in the shoulder unfastened. I can get away with it. If I can't get to the tailor and I But look at this, see how it starts to gather in the back? That's a problem. That's the shirt underneath, that's what's causing that roughness in the back. Now I fastened the suit jacket, watch this. See how it's pulling? You shouldn't have this pull in your jacket. And look at that mess in the back. That's the shirt. That's the fabric from the shirt that's causing that mess to show up like that. Here's something else that lets me know that this suit is too small. Look at the pockets. See how the pockets are sticking out? The pockets to your slacks should lay flat. Just another sign that the pants are too tight. It's time to go to the tailor. Alright gang, talk to you soon.
