How to Shape and Line Up Your Beard at Home

Barber Kevin L. Horne shows how to trim and line up your beard at home with an Andis clipper and double-O guard. Trim with the grain, use a razor for detail work, and finish with aftershave or diluted alcohol to avoid irritation. This is cleanup between barber visits, not a replacement.

Hey everyone, this is Kevin Horn. Listen, today I just want to share a tip with you, a grooming tip with the men. I know that it's difficult a lot of times for you to get to your barber. You're traveling and you're in between barber visits and you just can't get to your barber in time. And a lot of times you want to know just how to maintain your beard. It's simple, takes a little practice, but it's simple. I'm using the Andis clipper. This is my clipper of choice, right? The double O guard, right? Double O in the barber world. So I'm going with the grain of the hair. I have this closed all the way. I'm just going down. Now there's not a lot coming off because I did this just yesterday, and I know just how much this will take off, and I don't want to take— go any lower than that, so it's not going to take off a lot. But I just want you to see me go through the motions. This is what I would do. This is all I'm doing. I'm going with the grade of the hair right now in the middle of I have a lot of gray, more than I desire, but this is a great way to maintain that wild gray hair, right? Go with it. If you want, you can take the clip, the guard off and go with it. That gray, gray tends to be very coarse and sometimes you may have to go just a tad lower to clip that gray hair off. It's very resistant hair. Now, in terms of lining it up, again, this is for that person who cannot get to the barber. This is not for you to replace your barber, alright? So all you're doing is cleaning up, period. You clip right here. You're not making lines, right? You're cleaning up any hair that's above your line. You go up away from the line, not into the line. I've been a barber for 25 years and I still have to watch how I go into the my beard. As a matter of fact, I use a razor before I use the clippers because I can be more exact with the razor than I can with the, with the, uh, with the clipper. But for you, this is not what you do. You're not replacing your barber. All you're doing, you're cleaning this up. You're coming away from the line, right? You attempt to do this, go into it, you will be running or chasing your line lower and lower and it doesn't— it looks ugly, and your barber will be upset with you because now you've messed up his work. You know, now you have to wait for it to grow back, XYZ. Underneath here, your barber made it easy for you because all you have to do is trace behind his line and go down, baby. This is all you're doing. Engaged in the line already. I'm sorry, I'm teaching, right? Listen, I'm coming down. Away from the line, baby. Same thing with the mustache. I'll go right where the mustache line is and away. Mustache line. Away, baby. Doesn't get much easier than that. It takes a little practice, but again, you're not a skilled barber. You're just cleaning this up in between barber visits. All right, afterwards, make sure you put a little aftershave on your beard— on your skin, rather. Uh, if you're going to use alcohol, don't put straight alcohol on your, on your skin, man. All right, if you don't have witch hazel or maybe some Sea Breeze, you can take the alcohol and cut the alcohol with a little water. You know, you're not supposed to burn yourself up, set yourself on fire with alcohol. It's not how it goes. I know barbers do that, but that's another video. All right, this is Kevin Horn. Talk to you soon.
