Class 3 vs Class 4 Shingles: Impact Rating Differences Explained By A Roofer | Roofing Guide 2025

Cody Landos, founder of Reimagine Roofing, breaks down Class 3 versus Class 4 shingles and how their impact ratings affect hail resistance and insurance costs. Class 4 shingles offer better protection and can lower your premiums, though they cost more upfront.
Hey, guys, Cody Landos here, founder and CEO of Reimagine Roofing. And what I want to talk about today is the difference between a Class 3 and a Class 4 shingle. First, we'll want to talk about how do they get these ratings. Then we'll talk about what it means to you both on the financial side as well as the longevity side. All right, so let's talk a little about how shingles get their ratings. So all shingles go through the same standardized testing where steel balls of different sizes are dropped from a standardized height. How well these shingles resist the steel balls is how they get the rating between Class 1 to Class 4, with Class 4 being the most hail resistance. Here at Reimagine Roofing, we only offer class three and class four. So let's talk about the difference between those two and what that means to you. All right, so a Class 4 shingle can resist hail up to 2 inches. That means it's hail resistant up to baseball size. Hail. Now, class three shingle is only going to be hail resistant up to 1 1/2 inch. So think maybe a little bit smaller than a golf ball. All right, now, with a Class 4 shingle, the big benefit in addition to the resistance of the hail is also the reduction in insurance premiums. Because your home is better protected, many insurance providers will give you a lower insurance premium because the home is more protected. This is especially true if you're in a high risk hail zone or if you see if historically you've seen hail that is larger than a baseball. So insurance companies understand this and that's why they incentivize homeowners to look at the Class 4 shingle. All right, so key takeaway, both the Class 3 and the Class 4 both provide amazing hail resistance. However, Class 4 does go all the way up to the 2 inches. And, and it is recommended if you're in a high hail frequency area. Now, the one drawback of the Class 4, it is going to have a higher upfront cost. That being said, you can look at typically being 10 to 15% more than a class three. So not a massive increase in upfront investment. And typically you will get return on investment through the insurance premium reduction. All right, then, here at Reimagine Roofing, we only offer Class 3 and Class 4. So if you want a more breakdown of the different packages we offer, be sure to check the video after this where I do a full breakdown on those packages. But a quick summary. Our stone coated steel, which is our metal shingle, and the bulletproof package both have a Class 4 shingle, with that Class 4 being the IKO Nordic Storm shingle. The peace of mind and the essentials are both Class 3 shingle. So whether you decide on a Class 3 or Class 4, either way, you're getting an absolutely amazing roof and we look forward to helping you make that decision process. And most of all, thank you for considering us with such a huge. An important investment. We look forward to earning your trust. All right, thanks, bye.
