In this interview segment, Rodrigo Barros discusses with natural bodybuilding coach Jeff Alberts the challenges natural lifters face when cutting compared to hormone‑assisted athletes. Alberts explains that research shows natural lifters should aim to lose about 0.5%–1% of their body weight per week to maximize muscle retention. He warns that faster deficits trigger the body to use muscle for energy, leading to a lean but thinner physique. Barros reinforces the point by contrasting the “catabolic shield” that hormones provide, allowing more aggressive diets for hormone users, and highlights common mistakes such as overeating during bulking and then slashing calories abruptly for cutting, which often results in simultaneous fat and muscle loss. Alberts also shares personal experience from his contest prep, noting that a slower, more measured approach allowed him to retain more muscle later in life. The segment serves as a practical guide for natural athletes on pacing their cut, avoiding rapid weight loss, and maintaining muscle mass.

How fast can you lose weight without losing muscle as a natural lifter in a cutting phase?
We know through the research that you should be around half to one percent of your body weight per week.
It's probably the most ideal where you would, you know, be able to retain as much muscle mass. Like if you go more than one percent per week for successive weeks, the deficits just really great. So your body's gonna be like, okay, I'm gonna use up anything I can. Your energy, and that includes your muscle mass because it doesn't want to starve and die, obviously. So again, like trying to diet super fast to look good, chances are you might lose some muscle with it. And I think the end product, like you want your physique to look lean and muscular, not just a smaller version of yourself. And this is something that I've experienced, you know, firsthand with my contest preps back when I was in my 20s and 30s. I was aggressive, and you know, I get on stage shredded, but I didn't have as much muscle mass as I do now in my 40s and 50s. And it wasn't that I gained.
