Short motivational talk (YouTube) by Larry Weidel advising how to decide which recruits deserve your time. He recommends giving everyone a chance but prioritizing those who are hungry (arrive early), ask but also do (ask questions and work), are coachable, and demonstrate productivity—time should be spent on people who earn it rather than those who merely need help because time is limited.
Foreign. What do you look for in a recruit when deciding who you give your time to? That's very easy. Well, first of all, you give everybody a chance, but it's very easy to see who's hungry, you know, who comes early. I'm looking for people to come early. I'm looking for people who ask questions, but they ask questions, but they also work. Let me do ask questions. Plus they actually work. Some people, all they do is ask questions and they feel like that's their whole reason for living, is to waste your life, your time. And the way you handle people like that is you tell them, okay, Write your next 10 questions down. Give it to me on a piece of paper. They bring it to you. You say, okay, I'm gonna stick this in the drawer. And as soon, as soon as we get you three recruits, then I'm going to answer these for you. Now we got to go do something other than ask questions. And what I usually do is thank them and then just wad it up and throw it in the trash if they get busy. Usually the questions will get answered. But you want them with a lively mind. You want them hungry, you want people who are coachable. The thing is, you spend your time with the people who deserve it. It took me a long time to understand that they deserve it because they earn it. Earn it, not the people who need it. See, when Art Williams said that the first time, I thought, what a cold hearted. I'm going to spend time with people who need my help. Poor, needy people. And, you know, maybe they just don't know how. Maybe they'd earned it if they knew. No. Do you know why you do this? Here's why. The reason why is because everyone needs it. Everyone needs your help. And there's not enough time in the day. You find you always have enough time for the people that are working. And so that's what I would say.
