Most People Don’t Legitimately Have a Solid Self Image with Million Dollar Earner Hector LaMarque

Hector LaMarque talks with Larry Weidel about why most people lack a solid self-image and how that shapes their results. He argues that purpose matters more than hitting specific goals, and that building a strong team means finding people who are already motivated to grow.
Welcome to this episode of the Million Dollar Mastermind. I'm Larry Weddell. And before we get started, if you want to know exactly how to win again and again, go to Wydell on winning.com webinar now to watch something I've put together for you. Now let's get going into this episode of Million Dollar Mastermind.
I'm here talking with Hector Lamarck and what a thrill it is because of what Hector knows about winning. And it's not off the cuff, just experiential. It is an educated, it is a duplicated method. It is a repeat guided down to every step, every phase of living life intelligently, effectively, and moving forward using the energy and everything you create to continue to move forward and accomplish even more amazing things that you can't even believe. Because I know he's living a life now that he has to pinch himself. But if we checked in with Hector, probably at five years, his mind would be blown again with where his business and his life has gone. And that's because he's following a pattern. And so talk about Hector. Life is not in business. And all this progress is not a straight line.
No, it's not.
We all have our plans, but you know, you got to be able to adapt when things come in and just totally destroy your plans. But it's easier to get back on track if you started with the plan to begin with, you know.
Yeah, absolutely.
How did you, how would you describe the process of growth for people where they can have a mature, stay on track, stability about when they run into the things we all run into. Health problems, you know, car wrecks, you know.
Well, you know, the thing for me that's, you know, like, obviously you have to have goals. Goals are super important. The problem with goals is they have an ending, you know, like if your goal is to make a hundred thousand dollars a year, then you make a hundred thousand, then what? Right? I mean, so you have, it's, it ends. I, for me, my. I think having a purpose with your life is the most important thing. And I have a purpose. I have a, I graduated from college. I have a degree in psychology. I was going to become a clinical psychologist until I figured out how to have a Ph.D. and you know, it's another two, three, four years to school and you still don't make any real money. And I just, I said, no, it's not for me. And I did an internship with young kids, you know, like junior high kids. And I just noticed that there's, I mean, trying to help them was really futile for most, for the most part because they would go back into their, you know, you spend an hour with them a week and they go back into the dysfunctional homes and families. And it was just, it was almost like, you know, running on a treadmill. And so my purpose has always been, since the beginning I started my, my.
Business.
Is to help people develop and grow their self image. You know, most people's self images prevent them from having an amazing life because they don't see themselves as capable of doing something or they don't, you know, they don't believe in themselves for whatever reason, how they grew up, maybe they have dysfunctional family or whatever, but most, very few people have legitimately high level self esteem. And so my whole goal in building my business, my purpose was to help people grow and develop so that their self image follows and that grows and develops. So everything. I'm a teacher, that's why I teach. I've never been a motivator. You're never going to hear me try to motivate you from the stage or tell you what a great car I drive or great house I have. I don't do that. I teach. And because I think equipping people is the key to building for, for, for helping people grow their self image. When people start, you know, having higher skill levels and more knowledge, they start, they start having greater self belief and self image starts to grow. That's why I'm constantly pushing people to work on their personal development, have a personal development plan of some sort. I've, I do that for me, I know that made the difference in my life is personally the personal development that I've invested, I've invested probably, I don't know, maybe $150,000 or more on personal development over the last 40 years. And the payoff has been just tremendous. I mean, it's really amazing. So I think you need to have a purpose. What is your purpose here? What are you trying to accomplish with your life where, you know, at the end of the road when you're, when we're on our deathbed, you know, what, what are you going to look back and say, oh, I had an awesome house, an awes or whatever? No, it's going to be the impact you've had on other people's lives. So that's why I'll never retire. Because there's no end to a purpose that never ends. The number of people that need someone to guide them, to help them, to encourage them, to coach them, to teach them to, you know, is, is never Ending. And so retirement for me is not, is not an option. I will never retire. I'll keep doing this. I mentor a lot of people, a lot of people that aren't in my business. I mentor and that's what I do. That's my life that gets me going in the morning. That's what keeps me excited about my life and what I'm doing with my life. And I think you need to figure out what is your purpose, what are you trying to accomplish with your life. I know you want to get financially independent, all that sort of thing. That's great. And you should absolutely do that. I think being debt free and financially independent is a smart, smart goal. But that's a goal. But what's your purpose? You need to figure out what that is. I know for me, it's helping people with their self image, helping them believe in themselves, helping them grow and develop skills that allow them to change their lives and their family's lives. That's always been my goal from the very beginning. Starting Primerica. When you.
Look at life, you read the paper, you see things happening around you. You can't help but notice patterns of winning, patterns of losing, patterns where people are, you know, you know, after, after sport, you know, you know, game on television or something, the winning coach, the losing coach, the things they say. And that's going to resonate with you far more than you know, because when we're listening, you know, when we listen to people talk, we're listening on several levels and you know, we know what they're telling themselves. We know what, what it's probably going to lead to. We know if that's setting them up for success. The idea of having your purpose is it'll get help. You start to use your time in a way that'll be more rewarding and satisfying for you, you know, and you know, we've all got to go to the bumps of the road, but you know, just to go through the bumps in the road and you know, I endured the bumps on the road, but nothing was accomplished. But if you, you go through that in the process of accomplishing things you're proud of in your life, then there's a purpose to everything, you know, even dealing with negative situations and all. But as you observe, do you find yourself noticing things or seeing people, you know, like people running for office, you know, politicians and their campaigns and their interviews and how they respond, how they treat people around them, all of that stuff. You can pretty much recognize winners and people on track for future success and people that are Just one shot wonders, what are some of the things that you notice as you observe the parade of life?
Well, the thing that you see, the number one thing that causes people to win and causes people to lose is their thinking. So you can tell what person's thinking by the kind of words they use, what they talk about and kind of questions they ask. So most people's thinking, especially if they're struggling, you know, if you, if you, you know, if you see people that are struggling financial, they're, they're having challenges there, they're poor, they have a different thought process than the person that's not poor, the person that's well to do or wealthy. That's the difference. The difference, because how we create everything in our life, it emanates from what we're thinking about. And this is how everything you've ever created in your life, you created. First you thought about it, then you talked about it, then you put a plan together, then you acted on it, then you created it. Okay, or that's how everything happens. But it always starts with what you're thinking about. And so most people's thinking is mediocre to not very good. Right? I mean, it's just, that's most people. When you see people that are highly successful in any endeavor, I guarantee you their thought process is different than the people that are struggling. Much, much different. Because the thoughts, what they do is they, they determine what you do. Your thoughts determine your actions. Your actions create your results. So if you're not thinking like a winner, you're not thinking at a high level, then it's going to be very difficult for you to have success at anything. And you see that all the time. You know, if you're in a low level paid job and you're not doing very well, you got there through what you think about. If you're in a high paying job or a high paying business and you're doing well, you got there because of what you think about. And what most people don't guard as well as they should is, is they should guard their thinking. And that a lot of that has to do with who you associate with the books you read, the audios you listen to, you know, where you, where you pay attention. And so people, you know, my experience is most people's thinking isn't really very good. And so then that determines their actions and that determines their results. And you look at that people coming into the business. Why, why are some people like in our business, they come in and they, you know, they somehow figure out how to do this thing they end up doing incredibly well. And most people come in and don't. Why? Why is that? Well, it's because they're thinking. It always is because of that. You are exactly in your life right now where your level of thinking has taken you. Good, bad, different, it doesn't matter. That's where you are, that's where you will be. If you want to improve your situation, you must improve your thought process, your thinking.
And I think, I think where people get hung up, they think I'm going to wait for a light bulb to come on to where all of a sudden I'm thinking, right. They're like, you and I convinced ourselves that we could do it bigger by doing it bigger. And month by month, moving forward, taking.
Advantage of developing our skills and knowledge.
The new people that came in, the new possibilities, the new teams, having some targets, some mountains to go after, and in the process unleashing a bunch of activity that we learn things from. You know, you get success, but then you open up a whole world of opportunities to learn things you wouldn't have done if you had moved, hadn't moved forward. But even when we've had two by fours on our face, it's like, okay, there's a big lesson. I'm not going to expose myself to that again. You know, it's like being on the golf course and you got a big body of water on the left. You know, if you're a golfer, you're going to do everything you can to take that water out of play. Like, even if it's a bad shot, no matter how bad it is, if you have anything to do with it, that ball is not going in that water, you know, and you're going to steer around. But that comes from having hit it in the water a bunch, you know, growing up and learning the game. And so in life, even when we have disastrous habitats, we learn things like, okay, I got that down, that hurt. But now we move forward again. But you've got to go through the process of moving up from average to great, step by step. And I think people are, they never push themselves to go through the stages of climbing the stairs, of going from, you know, the twos to fours to eights, to, you know, learning step by step how to get more done in a day, week, month, year, how to motor, how to keep your team moving forward, you know, and all of those things. So as a result, they don't accomplish, you know, they never learn what they, they don't know. The only way to learn what you don't know is to move forward with what you do know. And that's one reason behind why you have always been. The one big takeaway I have had from every time I've been to a California meeting is you guys on stage telling them they got to work hard because really, that's a starting point and they got to be reminded of it. Don't you think? Hey, listen, there's a lot of information.
Online, but there aren't a lot of people who have actually done something. In my case, I've actually built a successful business, has accrued over 5 billion in assets under management, and has done well even during trying times. Now, if you want to know exactly how I've done this, go to Whiteellumwinning.com webinar Now, I've compressed a decade of learning into five short weeks. Just for those of you who want to give yourself an incredible advantage and are tired of waiting and watching others move up.
Yeah, because I'm a golfer, and I used to be a good golfer. I'm not as good as I used to be. But, you know, you mentioned about water and the difference between a professional golfer and I have a lot of friends that play on the PGA Tour, and somebody that's an amateur is the professional looks at the water and they know that's there, but they don't fixate on it. What they do is they only focus on their target, which is 10ft right of the pin or whatever it happens to be. They think about the target. They don't think about the obstacle. And that's the differential. That's what differentiates people from pros, from amateurs. The amateur is thinking, oh, my God, I don't want to hit it on water. And with the problem with that, when you're thinking about the water, you're thinking about something negative happening. You. You unconsciously, subconsciously, you create the situation you don't want because that's what you're focusing on instead of focusing on the target. And I think that's happens in our businesses as well, is instead of focusing on the problems, we need to focus on the target, where we want to be, not where we don't want to be. Because your thinking creates your. The next situation in your life. And so that, that's.
How can we. How can we say that to them? And you're exactly right. I appreciate you correcting that. The. How can we maybe come up with something to say to people? Because you and I both know we've got people we've been in business with for decades. Great people. And they, you know, they have all the skills, but they just are somehow stuck in the mud. What could we take away from that analogy to say to them that might allow them to have a light bulb go on, that they may not be realizing it, but they're thinking about the water?
Well, the thing about the most people that aren't doing well, you know, you know what their challenges, they're just simply not that motivated. Most people aren't that motivated. You know, one of the things that caused the explosion in my business took me about three years to figure this out. I wanted everybody to be successful and a lot of people just wouldn't do the work. They wouldn't. They're, you know, they're just weren't that motivated. And when I made a change about my third year, I said, okay, I'm not working with anybody that's not motivated anymore, period. Not doing it. And I started only focusing on the motivated people. And that's when my business exploded. That's when my income took off. That's when everything happened for me is when I stopped working with the unboated and trying to motivate people. It's an impossibility to motivate people. People either are or they aren't. Now you can the, you know, and even like if you want to really move people, your personal example is what's going to be the inspiration for the motivated people? The other people, they're not that aren't motivated. They're simply never going to do the things that they need to do.
And that would be stand out. What causes them to stand out to you as somebody that you could get.
Excited about spending time with their actions. They show up to all the meetings, they read the books you recommend, they listen to audios you recommend, they don't miss stuff. They're doing the things that you're asking them to do. You just pay attention to do it. You can see them, they stand out like a Thor, some sore thumb rather. I mean, they just do. And so that when I would find somebody that would actually do the things I was recommending that they do and teaching them, I spent more time with those people. I went out of my way to build a deeper relationship and spend more time with them because those are the people that are going to allow you that are going to become, you know, successful in the business, going to help you build your organization. I spent a lot more time. I think what happens in our business is a lot of people, they see people and they're trying to motivate people, and they're spending time with people that they shouldn't be spending time with, and then they get frustrated, and then they get dejected by it, and then that. That gets them off track. When you're. When you're working with motivated people and you're teaching them and they're actually implementing the things you're teaching them, and they're doing the things that. That's energizing. That would energize the heck out of me when I would have somebody that would actually listen to me. And so I. So what happened for me, because I did that and I focused only on the motivated. I never got burnt out. I was always excited about the business. It's when you're pouring time and energy into an unmotivated person that wears you out and gets you to get dejected. So I just stopped doing that.
Well, I think, Hector, I think also you have identified something that is holding a lot of people back that are motivated, at least more motivated than what they're showing. And that is they feel obligated to keep working with the handful of people they have who are not that motivated, you know, and they spend their time. I've got to come up with something. I'm the leader. I should be able to come up with something. It's kind of like I've had some talks. These guys are never going to do it. You got to get some new blood, you know, really, that's the key. If. If you're on track where you got new blood coming in and you've got someone. You got someone on your team and you're working with them, and they never get any new blood. They're just kind of going like a dog chasing their tail. That should send you a message. You're going to be a dog chasing your tail the rest of your life unless you cut them loose and go get somebody who will run with you.
Yeah, what I would do. What I. People come to me all the time, hey, Hector, I got this. This guy or this gal. They're really great. They could be really great at the business. How can I get them going? And I would say, well, you need to go find somebody else. Yeah, but you don't. You don't understand. They're really awesome. They could be really great. I think they'd be rp. What should I do with them? Nothing. You should go find somebody else that's motivated. No, but, Hector, you don't understand. No, go find somebody else that's not the right person. If you have to be pushing them to motivate them to do something they're wrong. That energy you're expending there is a complete waste. Focus on finding the right people that you know when people. What's the gotcha? In our business, the gotcha is that you have to work your tail off to find the right people. It's like mining for diamonds, right? Mining for gold. You got to turn over a lot of dirt to find that. Well, that's prospecting. You need to be prospecting more people till you find those people, the right people.
You're not willing to accept that. You need to accept the fact that you're lying to yourself.
Yeah, well, because they don't want to do the work.
Because they don't want to. Want to go get someone new.
They don't want to do the work. They don't want to do. They don't want to do the work.
This person. And this person needs motivation. The problem is you not wanting to do the work.
Absolutely.
Go get somebody who actually will work.
Absolutely. It's work.
Yeah.
Prospecting is a work in our business. In any sales business, it's prospecting. You got to be relentless about prospecting.
I remember coming up to me one time after a meeting saying, larry, what do I need to do to get off, you know, square one? You know, I just want to burst out and climb the charts and just go crazy and climb up there. And I said, I said, hang around for another five or 10 years. I said, because obviously you're not motivated. You don't want it bad enough right now. So all I can tell you is just kind of hang close to the fire until you get a burning desire to move up. Because right now, if you had that, you wouldn't be asking me that question.
Well, it's like if you're, if you're an athlete, you want plates for. I did too. I said, if you're a coach and you're trying to build a world class organization, you don't focus on the unmotivated people that are out for the team. You focus on the motivated people that are really doing what you're asking them to do. Right? That's what you do. That's how you build a championship team. It's no different in any business. You build a championship team because you find the right people and you go through the numbers to find the right people. The number one problem most companies have is finding the right people. That, that. Because you can't build a great organization of any kind without the right people and the people that do great that, you know, all the great companies, what they're doing, they're always prospecting, you know, whether it's Apple or Microsoft or any business. Right. They're always prospecting for talent. The people that are the right kinds of people that will help them move their business to the next place. Right. A higher place. That. That's it. That's every business. Not just our business, it's every business that works that way. So if you're not understanding that and willing to do that, you're just never going to get where you can get.
Yeah. And the thing is, when you get that person, they will stand out. You don't have to come up with an idea to make them stand out. When you get them on board, they're going to be so excited about the situation, working with you, whatever it was you told them, they're going to jump in and they will stand out.
You'll tell you guys, it's easy to see them. They stick out, like I said, like a thumb.
This has been fantastic. Hector, you've been really generous with your time and all and. Hey, would you like to give a final word to wrap this up?
Yeah, sure. You know, I think the thing that is. And I say this, I've already said it. You need to really focus on growing your skill sets and your knowledge, and you need to stay really focused on that. You need to. You need to focus on being great at what you do. Don't worry about the money initially. Worry about being great. Money will follow you if you get great at what you do. I see so many people chasing dollars. It's a mistake. I never chase money. I don't really even think. I look at the numbers all the time. But I'm not really worried about that. I'm worried about developing people and being great at what I do, and the money just keeps on flowing, and that's what you need to do, focus on being great.
You're a tremendous example in all of these things. These are not just words. This is the life you live and represent, you know, the representation you give for people. And, you know, you're consistent all the way through, and you always have been. It's. This has been so much fun for me. I hope you've had a good time.
I have, yeah. It's been great.
Can't wait to see you again. And hopefully our paths will cross soon.
All right. Hopefully on the golf course.
Yeah. And say hello to your family for the next time.
Appreciate you. Keep up the great work. This is helping. I think a lot of people appreciate it.
You're very generous. Thank you very much.
