Start Strong: The Key to Business Success

A motivational talk about how starting strong in your career pays off. John Neoporti, head pro at Trump International for decades, advanced by mastering every task, no matter how small, and keeping high standards. Commit fully early and doors open later.
How you start is to a large degree, how you finish because general consistency wins over time. So if you're starting out in life, you're starting out in a new job, you're starting your business. I mean, give it everything you've got because that sets the pattern. And then especially if you're the, you know, you're going to attract the attention one way or the other of the people around you. And if you get to where you're growing your business, you adding people on, they're going to take more of their cues from how they see you go about your business than anything else you could teach him. I was talking with John Neoporti out here at Trump International at lunch yesterday and he was talking about he's been the head pro out here for 25 something years and he's, he's the person, like he said, when President Trump drives out here, the first eyes he wants to see is John's eyes. He wants to read his face, see how things are going. But now, how did John do that? Now he grew up, his father was a pro and you know, he's a good, great golfer. He's still qualifying for, I think the Senior Open at this stage of his life, you know, he's a great golfer. But how did he get to be head pro and stay there working for one of the toughest guys in the world all these years? Well, it had to do with this approach, he said, when he, when he came. In spite of the fact that he had a lot of credentials and, you know, his family influence and Trump knew all of that, but, you know, he's a top golfer, he had credentials. But in spite of that, he had to work. And he said he came out here, he started at the bottom, he started picking up balls, driving the little truck around, picking up balls out in the, in the range. And he said, I made up my mind I was going to be the best range ball picker upper they'd ever had. And then when he came down to setting up the practice area, you know, he said, I wanted to do a better job of that than anybody had ever done. You know, the chairs were already always lined up in a straight line. You know, the, I always had the, you know, the pyramids of balls out there. As soon as someone hit balls, I'd go out and restack it. And everything always looked fresh, everything was always lined up. Attention to detail, he said, as a result, things worked out. When they look for people, they want to move up to the next step along the way, you know, I stood out. And so that's the way. And he's carried that all through his career. Folks, you're going to see that pattern repeated over and over and over with top leaders throughout business. So think about how you're going about your business. Start strong, start committed. Give everything you've got to what you're doing and put yourself in a position where good things can happen to you. Because what you're doing now so well opens the door for new opportunities to come down the road.
