Success Gives You Access with Jeff Love

Larry Weidel talks with attorney and real estate broker Jeff Love about how success opens doors. Love became a partner at his law firm and built a real estate portfolio, and he explains how winning early creates momentum for bigger opportunities in business and life.
Welcome to this episode of the Million Dollar Mastermind. I'm Larry Weddell and let's get started. I'm with Jeff Love, attorney and real estate broker from Southern California. And Jeff, I wanted to talk to you about winning. You know, you become a partner in your firm, you're advising a lot of high profile people. You have won. You, you, you were somebody that would be the perfect example of a serial winner. You won. Starting out in life, you've, you know, you won, you've run into roadblocks every step of the way, yet you stayed on your path of what you wanted to be, you wanted to do. And, and you've made it happen. You know, stair step your way up to the top to where you're even a partner at a firm now and not just an entrepreneur. You are advising big time type people in business and entrepreneurs of their own. So it's an exciting life, but it's rare air. Very few people will be able to achieve that who start at UCLA and find out they're not really cut out to be a doctor or surgeon and they switch over to law and get that law degree. Very few of them are going to become a partner in their own firm in an arena that's exciting to them. So I call that serial winning. Go from one opportunity, you know, you go through the finish line and if you have your eyes open, you realize all kind of new opportunities are opened up to you. And you've seen that happen step by step and so talk about the successes. You know, very few people want to talk about their successes. They feel like it's bragging, but just to let people know what you've had the chance to experience and what that felt like for you to do that and then how that's changed the impact in your family and what you're able to do for your kids and your community and causes you believe in and impact on your clients. So talk about the benefits of winning. You know, is it worth fighting for and how does it feel to have had these achievements?
It is absolutely worth fighting for. You know, the nice part of when you get close or get to where you want to go is by the time you're at that point, you often enjoy what you're doing. So, you know, not being able to find that right job or if I was going on a different path, I may not enjoy it, but I genuinely like what I do. I like being able to advise clients on this real estate transaction or forming that business or buying that new company because I see the tangible effects that it has it grows their business, it grows their wealth. And I can, I'm helping not just myself, but other people succeed. And by being, you know, a partner at my law firm, it's, I'm able to call the people that were once, you know, my bosses are now my colleagues and my friends, which to me is just, you know, one of the best things that I could achieve. You know, with that comes more flexibility. So I'm, I'm able to, you know, instead of working, you know, attorneys work a lot. We know we're notorious for doing so. But I'm also able to take off at three or four o'clock on an afternoon to, you know, go to my son, my 4 year old's T ball practice that he was doing before COVID I was able to leave and go see that where another job, another industry, you may be being lower on that totem pole of success, so to speak, I'm not able to do that. So to me having those benefits is something really to strive to get as far as your career will take you. And not just law. In really any industry, you could be successful, I think if you put your mind to it and you tell yourself that's where you want to go and don't let people discourage you. There's so many stories that people putting others down or you can't get to that point or you can't do that, but once you get there, you prove them wrong and you are successful. And I think it helps not just your pocketbook, your family life, being able to enjoy certain things, but also really give back. And you know, the extra time that I have or being more flexible allows me, you know, that baseball practice, give back to kind of community and these other tangible benefits that really go along with it.
Well, the other thing is when you're starting out, you're forced to work on menial type things, but as you succeed and do a good job at those lower level things, you get promoted, you get moved up, you get to work on bigger things, better things, and regardless of the income or whatever, it's more challenging, it's more enjoying and the people you spend your time with on the phone or in person become, you know, more successful themselves, you know, and it's, it's energizing to hear their ideas. You know, it's not like I, a class thing, I only talk to this guy. But you're able to interact with people that have super energy, have super motivation, have super experiences, and have learned really unique information that just kind of pops out in conversation that causes you to light bulbs, go on in your own head and talk about the benefit of just your circle of friends improving and what that does to keep you stimulated.
Well, it does. I mean, you know, being able to be around like minded people, I think people that have kind of similar goals as you do, you're able to get advice and bounce ideas off of each other. I've got so many clients that you know, are part of, you know, maybe a networking group or an industry group where you can have colleagues in that same type of industry and really just get unbiased feedback that helps you kind of outline your goals, where you want to go and get an honest opinion of what you're looking to do. And having those colleagues, you know, really, really helps and enables you to do that. One nice thing about firms, or my law firm in particular, is even when we're advising clients, there could be a question, I don't know or one another attorney's opinion. And I can go into one of my partner's offices and say, hey, what do you think about this idea? Or what are your thoughts on this strategy? And I'm able to bounce something off of them. And I think that enables me to give better advice and be a better attorney. And that's only because of that camaraderie and that kind of circle of friends or circle of colleagues that you have. You're able to take that kind of collective wisdom and do a better job for your client. Not just a law firm, but any kind of service industry, even a non services in your company you may have colleagues you're working on, you're working on a database or you're working on a product. And being able to bounce those ideas off of each other can help you be made more successful and help you get promoted to go down that path of success that you're working towards.
Yeah, one way of saying that Jeff, is like success gives you access to a whole world of other things that will make your life more exciting, add quality and richness and excitement to your life and as a result, achievement. But on the beginning, one way of telling this is when you're on the way up, you will be surrounded with a lot of people. When you tell them, if you were to tell them your biggest ambition, your big idea that you had or what you really want to do, they'll say that will never happen to you. Things like that don't happen to people like you, you know, give it up and. But when you do break through and you're able to now have a different operate in a Different arena of higher achievers. When you come up with your latest mind blowing new passion, those people say, I love it, go for it. In fact, here's somebody who could help you with that. I know somebody who, who's, who's been in that arena before. They got, they, they could tell you, give you some, some really good ideas on how I know where you can get the funding for that. And so as you have success, you, you wind up having access to a different group of people to bounce these ideas off of. And where the feedback you get the echo back from your idea is not negative, it's positive and inspiring, you know, and it's, you know, it makes achieving the great things even easier. So anyway, that, Jeff, it's just, just a peek behind the scenes. What are you excited about right now? Doing what, what, what's, what's something that you're looking forward to that maybe when that happens, we'll have you come back and talk about it. What would be mind blowing for you right now? I'm putting on, putting you on the spot, Jeff, because you're not going to be worth a crap going forward unless you have something really mind blowing you want to do. I'm going to give you a little, right? I mean, you just cannot let. I just want to do more of what I'm doing now. No, you're good. You're going to flatline, man. So what can you, you know, with your family, with your son, you know, you may have other kids and all with your community, you know, your business, what, what kind of challenges, you know, maybe it's running, you know, marathon, doing a triathlete, maybe it's something like that. But what, what is something you can get super excited about or maybe you are super excited about right now.
In addition to, you know, my play as a lawyer and broker as well, I'm also a real estate investor. You know, I see clients being so successful with it and buying property, so acquired a couple properties and my goal is to keep acquiring them. Once I hit my fifth property, I think that will be a big milestone for me personally. And to me, that's kind of another side of trying to be successful. That's my kind of retirement plan where I don't have to work forever. That's passive income and that's something that I can leave to my kids. So to me, if I can hit that milestone that I've set for myself, that'll be a big achievement and I'll be super, super excited and happy to talk about what that entailed. And building that kind of side business and that passive income for future generations.
Absolutely, Jeff. And is that something that you can put on a timetable? I do.
It's, you know, it's, it's a long term for all the properties, but I'd say within the next, next year or so that that's my goal to hit that number. And if I do that, then I'll, then I'll set a new one and I'll try to reach that goal. But there's always something to strive towards.
Yeah, I, I knew you had something in there that you, you in the back of your mind that was, was keeping you going. So thanks for sharing, thanks for being open and thanks for all the great ideas. And when you break through to that thing, give me a call and let's, you know, you're going to learn so much, Jeff, right now because, you know, the more, you know, the more you do, the more success you have, the more you can learn. It's just amazing. It's a room full of people. It's always the most successful people that are absorbing the most and getting the most new ideas just simply because they have a bigger experience base to process what they're hearing. And I imagine the next 12 months are going to be the most educational and exciting for you and it's gonna be fun to talk to you down the road and see what you've learned, see what you're excited about and see what you're focused on for your next project. So let's do that. So thanks for being on with us, Jeff. You have any last word you want to pass on to people?
Never, never stop trying. Just always set that goal and keep, keep moving towards it.
