8 Things YOU Need to Know in Order to Crush Your Goals

A real estate professional breaks down the first four of eight principles for crushing goals, starting with putting your life first and treating your business like a franchise that doesn't depend on you. Growth is hard, like fitness, and you need to become a productivity warrior to make it work.
Welcome back, Business Freedom podcast listeners. So we're in another series and this series is geared toward, you know, thinking about your life and your business and getting clear on what you want in the different areas of your life. And so while I am definitely a lover of business, I show up, my more important focus areas are that of father and husband and man of God and focusing on my physical body and my emotional well being. And so that is what I want for all of you, is a clear process that you can follow for you to achieve at a high level in all the areas of your life that matter. So I started off the last podcast episode with the question we will you have regrets if you stick with your current plan? If you missed that one, you want to go back and consume that podcast first. That's kind of an entry point to our conversation. I'm probably going to run about five podcast episodes here for this big picture conversation on how do you make your life and make your business what you see in your head? It's easy to see something in your head if you slow down and think, which is a hard thing. We talked about that on the last episode. What's the process to actually do it? The last episode of this series will be what I'm calling using the 319013 goal achievement process, which is something we teach in real estate B school. So today I want to talk about the eight things you must know about crushing your goals and how to kind of frame this conversation very specifically, what you need to know before you get into this. This is something that I've been. Been pretty good at. You know, I failed a lot, you know, so there's not a big ego, you know, behind that comment that this is something I've been really good at. It's more like because I was really clear on where I wanted to go. I didn't get. There was never a feeling of getting, of having a setback if things didn't go exactly the way that I planned because it didn't change where I wanted to go. Like in 2009, I decided in 2012, I want to have a business that really gave me freedom that I wasn't involved in real estate transactions. I wasn't, you know, we don't teach in real estate peaceful how to get 100% out of production. And that's the only thing we teach. We teach how to build, leverage your systems. You know, sustainable systems empower people so that you could have some time to yourself. You have more money to show for it and less stress as a result. And so for me, though, I was super clear that I was not as patient as I needed to be. I don't know, God didn't make me to work with buyers and sellers. And I believe that. I believe God had a plan all along for me to build a leveraged business so that I could teach others how to do it. And ultimately in all of that, have a major impact not only in my local community, but throughout the country through the businesses I'm helping. So there was this clear plan. I could look back now and see that God was working in me and through me because I certainly didn't know what I was getting into when I got into real estate. So today, let's dig into the eight things you really need to know here about crushing your goals and how to put some context around this process that we're going to put you through in a few podcast episodes. So I know there's a lot of, what do they call it? I'm putting some bait in the water, you know. So I do want you to listen to the next few episodes and get to the punchline, which is the actual planning process that we follow. So let's get into it. Number one, I want to talk about putting your life first. Oftentimes I see top producing real estate agents. So real estate B school, we work with folks that have already achieved that first big push of success. Generally, you know, 3 to 500,000 GCI, they've got an administrator, they're established all the way up to 5 million GCI. Some of our clients, it's rare that I see someone come in to our world that has put their life first. And it is, if you think about in two episodes, I'm going to go through the four key business drivers in detail. One of those drivers we call scale and one of the accelerators we call Create youe Future. The first thing we do in Create youe Future is we go through an exercise called Putting youg Life First. It's sort of counterintuitive that, you know, if you want success in business, you need to put your business first. And that's what everyone does. And as a result of that, they're out of kilter in every area of the business. Their marriage is struggling. They're not showing up as a great dad or a great mom. Their physical body, their spiritual journey is off. They're emotionally not where they need to be. So it's just this. When you orient your business to support your life, it changes everything. And so that's the first thing I want you to really think about. And we'll go through the actual exercise, not the full exercise that we do with our members. We'll go through an exercise that will help you put some context around that. Second thing I want to go through here, number two, is that growth is hard. And the analogy I want to use here, and it's like if you've ever really focused on your physical body. And so this is something I use this example because I am in the midst of it and I am one full quarter of maintenance and I haven't done that very successfully. And what I mean by that. So April 15th of this year, I committed to. I was £224, which actually carried it. Okay? So I don't think I looked like I was chubby and I had. I still think I have about 10 pounds of fat on me. I'm 191 now, so 33 pounds less. And I kept got down to 194 in 90 days and now I lost 3 pounds in the last 90 days. So I am in maintenance mode. I am not hurrying to lose any more weight. That process though, is really hard. Working out when I don't feel like it is really hard and when I really push myself in my workouts, it is really hard. I got a peloton tread, which is. It's about the coolest thing ever. If you all know me or you've been around the podcast for any time, you know that I'm all about efficiency. And I just decided one day that man going to the gym, there's so much inefficiency there. It's like 15 minutes ride and then, you know, like five minutes to get on a machine and you know, and then you kind of work out and then, I don't know, it's just like the most inefficient process ever. And so now I just, sometimes I'll put on my gym clothes and like in the beginning of the day, knowing that I have to work out sometime that day. And I just go in my workout room and I hit the start button and it is game on. But it is really hard. Sometimes I miss the workout and I get done at work at 5:30 and I will spend a couple hours with the family and I will be like, it's 7:30 and I haven't worked out yet. My commitment is to five or really four. The commitment is four and my push is five. Five great workouts, five hard workouts a week. And I know I can't skip too many nights because my morning routine, it hasn't really been allowing for me to work out. I want to be with the family. I want to be in the word of God. I want to kind of do some things in the morning. I want to connect with Julie. We sit by this little place in our house and we just kind of talk about our day and that really has been working out amazingly well for me. I don't want to leave the family in the morning time. So anyway, all of that. My point is that it's hard. None of it's easy. I've gone to a. Well for the last little while, totally plant based whole food. I love ribs. I love like just barbecue drenched ribs. I love sushi, I love, you know, I love eggs. I've given some of that up just to see what happens to my body if I can shed this last ten pounds through just focusing on a plant based whole food diet. I read a book, awesome book called Eat to Live by Joel Fuhrman that was really just, I don't know, it was convicting and inspiring and you just couldn't ignore what it was saying. So my point is all of that is hard. The same thing is true for business, that growth is really hard. It's really hard. And you've got to sort of know that going in that this is going to this process of growing your business and growing your life is going to be really hard. All right, number three is that you have to take a mindset of a franchise owner and this is straight up E Myth, right? The franchise mindset. As you begin to think about how your business is going to look in the future, you have to ask yourself the E Myth question. How would I think about my business differently if I were to replicate it 10,000 times, essentially? I don't know if that's word for word. That's like the E myth question. You know, if you had to open 10,000 locations of your real estate business, how would you think about it differently? And that is like the flagship question for the existence of real estate B school. Just start thinking about it like how if you couldn't go on buyer and seller consults, if you couldn't show homes or go on listing appointments, if you couldn't lead generate, if you couldn't call your soi, like if you couldn't, you know, just think of all the things that you couldn't do if you were in 10,000 different locations, that's a prerequisite for being able to build a version of this thing that doesn't 100% rely on you. And that doesn't require that you get out of production. You know, that could be your position on the team, is that you love listing homes, right? So you're listing agent on the team, yet the team still doesn't revolve around you. So it's that franchise mindset that was the first book, one of the. I think it was actually the first business book I read when I got into real estate. This was April 2007 and I've read hundreds of books since. And when I. When I mean read, I mean listen to on Audible because I'm not a great reader. That book, though, I wonder if it was even I had Audible back then. I think I may have actually read that book. Anyway, it just changed the way I thought about business. You know, he's the guy, Michael Gerber's the guy that working on your business versus working in your business. So. And the technician, the manager and entrepreneur. You know, generally real estate agents are technicians. They think they're business owners. They're just doing the job of a real estate agent. If they stop doing that job, the thing just comes to a screeching halt. I know big real estate teams where if the team owner stopped doing what they were doing, the whole thing would fall apart. And so it's that focus on building it out like a franchise that had to run without the owner. That's number three. So number four is that you must become a productivity warrior. I've done lots of talks here. I think I did a whole series, what was that like a 12 part series on? I'm looking through the podcast list here. I think I did a 12 part series on productivity. And so there's no shortage here in the podcast of talk about productivity. The point I want to make here about becoming a productivity warrior is that in the context of achieving big things and taking your business and your life from where it is today to a really different point in the future where maybe time, money, stress is not really great for you right now and you see it very differently in the future. To bridge that gap, you've got to get real clear on the things you need to do every quarter, month, week, day, hour to get there. You know, generally we as real estate agents and as real estate team leaders, we generally get to say where we are at different times during the day. It's one of the best things about being a business owner. I was talking to my daughter, this was just the other night, and she's nine years old and she was talking about. I think she just asked me a question about, you know, something about Being a boss, like, are you the boss of somebody? Or, you know, or who's your boss? I think she may even ask, like, who's your boss? And that's a deep question because it's really, you know, my team members, my clients, you know, God, you know, I'm building this business to glorify God. Ultimately, she meant it like, literally, like, who's your boss? I said, well, it's kind of interesting. As a business owner, you know, the challenge is you're your own boss, so you have freedom to do what you want with your time. And with that freedom, it comes a lot of responsibility because you have to make choices with your time. You have to manage overhead. You feel the pressure of, you know, spending money and have to hold accountable, managing people and holding them accountable to higher standards and all that. And so when it comes to the decisions I make with my time, I consider the fact that I'm taking away time from my family to work, and I better make the best possible use of my time if I'm going to do that. So whatever leverage you need to be able to focus on the things that matter, make sure that you make it count in terms of being productive. I actually think I'm going to do these eight in two parts because I got pretty deep there and I don't want to rush here at the end. So stay tuned. This is going to be the part one of the eight things you must know about crushing your goals. And you've got to tune in for the next for. And they will be. They'll be powerful. So you want to definitely tune in. You know what I'm going to say at this point. If you're at the point in your business where, you know, you need to get clear on where you're going to be honest with yourself about where you're at in your journey, not only in your business, but personally. And just have an open, authentic conversation with somebody who's been there before. The only thing I can offer you is a conversation about all of that. Go to real estate B school. It's obvious our pilot program is the thing you want to take action on and just put in an application for it. And if you qualify, we'll give you 30 days of free coaching around all of this stuff. And the thing I want to say on that, generally our starting point is three in the low end to 500,000 GCI, all the way up to whatever. You know, you're running a real estate team, small or large, you've got some leverage in your life where you get to a little bit of time during the week to work on your business. Those are the folks that we want to work with. And so take action. Go to realestatebschool.com there's that bright orange banner about the pilot program. That's where you want to be and we'll see you there. And tune in for part two of the eight things you must know about crushing your goals on the next podcast episode.
