How Real Estate Team Leaders Keep the Faith When Times Are Tough!

Lars Hedinburg maps a cycle of hope, suffering, perseverance, and character onto real estate team leadership. He argues that building character through daily perseverance attracts better opportunities and helps leaders separate hope loops across business, clients, family, and finances to play the long game.
Hey, this is Lars Hedinburg with the Business Freedom Podcast, co founder of High Performance Real Estate Advisors, Charlotte, North Carolina, and founder of Real Estate B School. I want to dig into something today which really hit me. This past weekend, we celebrated 10 years at our church, Elevation Church in Charlotte, N.C. and every mother's Day. So this was on Mother's Day. Every Mother's Day, our pastor has his wife give a sermon, and she doesn't give a whole lot of sermons over the course of a year, and she was unbelievable. And the application to what I'm going to share with you, it is from the Bible, and the application hit me like a ton of bricks when it relates to just growing a real estate team, building a real business, building something that has a life outside of you, a lot of these real estate teams, and you may be one of them where you need to do things in the business that you have to do to make the kind of money that you want to make. And specifically, you have to work with buyers and sellers. Even though you have a team, maybe it's just not set up the right way. And so I want to take you through this. It was a scripture from Romans, I believe, and it was talking about, you know, we are called to have hope. And as business owners, 100%, if you don't have hope, if you've lost hope, then everything is going to go bad in every area of your life. So we want to have hope. And hope brings about sufferings, you know, and in business, they're suffering to build a business. You know, even when your business is running smoothly, there, there are sufferings that you'll go through. So hope brings about suffering, sufferings. As you work through, whatever's going on in your business or your personal life leads to perseverance. So to get through sufferings, we're called to have perseverance. Right? It's not going to be easy. This journey of true business ownership, we have a tangible business asset that throws off money that's unrelated to what you do in the business and how many hours you put in. Perseverance is required. And through that perseverance, we build character. And as we build character, we have more hope for something better in our business and personal life. So this hope, sufferings, perseverance, character loop. One of the bigger takes away from the talk that Holly Furtick was giving on Mother's Day was there are these cycles, so you might have something big if you're building a real estate team. This hope, sufferings, perseverance, character, hope, sufferings, perseverance character loop is front and center. It is 99% of the time the biggest, biggest hope loop that you have going on in your life. The challenge becomes is you have that loop. You know, maybe there's the big picture hope loop for your business where you need to just scale your real estate team so that you're not involved in every bit of it. You have time, money, freedom and less stress. That's the big loop. And then you have a client issue that you're working through that's really bad. Over here you have maybe your financial world outside of your business, you've taken on debt, or you have crappy consumer debt, or you have children going into college, you don't know how you're going to pay for it, those sorts of things. You haven't taken a vacation in four years and your spouse is wondering like why you're doing this. It doesn't, it's not leading us to any better life than when you were a single agent. So there's all these other loops that are going around. Maybe your child is having, you know, a bad, they're going through a tough season socially or you know, they're doing things you'd rather not have them do. That goes at any age. We have a 9 and 11 year old and we have hopes, hope loops around both of our kids always hope, suffering, perseverance, character, more hope, more suffering, more perseverance, more character. So when you have all those little hope loops going on at the same time as the big one in the center of our lives, which typically is the business we're building, it can become overwhelming. And that was the real takeaway, is that you've got to get to a point where you're playing a longer game, a long game, so that all of these things that are going on, you can easily call them suffering loops. I choose to call them hope loops. You need to realize that they're not all connected. Right, they're not all connected. And in the course of a 20 year business building career, I'm 45, I think I'll be at this till I'm 65. I don't have to be. I choose to work probably hard, charge for the next 10 years, and then maybe the next 10 years after that, you know, maybe more passively or shift to some other aspect of business. Maybe buy. I've always envisioned buying like a dry cleaner or a car wash. So maybe I'll do that in the 55 to 65 season of my life. I just know there's going to be suffering And I need to persevere and I'm going to come out the other side with a stronger character, ready to call for more, for bigger things. And I do think we will be given bigger opportunity as we can prove that we can handle smaller opportunities. So I think this hope loop gets bigger and the sufferings can feel bigger. It's only because we've proven that we can handle it. And so that was really helpful for me. I'm already in the mindset of playing a longer game in business. I used to be like, we've got to grow. I've got to increase my net worth, I've got to, gotta, gotta. And now I just really focus on every day, just doing the things I need to do to get through whatever suffering I'm in and just apply that perseverance, knowing that there's another side, there's a light at the end of the tunnel. And when you hit that light, you call for something bigger. And that's going to put you on a bigger mountain, a harder mountain to scale. That's going to be hard, that's going to require you to dig in and be consistent and persistent. And then out of that you're going to have a stronger character and you're going to be a stronger leader, a better manager, and you're going to attract even better talent into your world. And then you just keep along that cycle. And so the encouragement for me is that all of those different cycles that are going on are not connected. They're just not connected. You can have five clients that are pissed off at you at the same time, yet none of them are actually connected. And so keep them separate. You can have a challenge with a spouse, with each of your three kids. You can be suffering physically or spiritually, or none of them are connected. And it's every day, just a little bit one step forward every day. And in that is, to me, it's comforting to know we don't have to do all of this in a single year, in a single season. You know, business. The goal of business is to stay in business and be relevant. And the things we're doing in my real estate team now are things that we've never done before that are making us even more relevant as all of the shift storm that I've talked about in prior episodes here on the Business Freedom podcast, the four part shift storm that we're going through now. And it's not going to stop over the next one, two, three years. So that's all I've got for you. Hopefully there's some encouragement in this message. If you're a real estate team leader or you're just starting to grow real estate team and you look back and you can't see the fruits of your labor, maybe you don't have more time outside of the business. You don't have an increased net worth or more money to show for it. You have more stress than you did before. The time money stress equation is something I think I'll speak that tune until I hit the grave. That's the ultimate measurement in my opinion, about success in business. Do you have more time to do what you want outside of the business? Do you have more money to do it with and do you have less stress? You're not jacking up every other area of your life and doing stupid things in your relationships and stupid things to your body and in your mind. So if you're at a point where you can't really wrap your hands around your business or you've got a young real estate team or a large real estate team and it feels like it's out of control or the profit margins aren't there, it's not systems driven. You're spending a bunch of money on things that used to work. You know, the Zillows, the realtor.com, the mass media. And margins on all of those lead sources have gone down over the last three to four years. I track like a crazy person. If I'm speaking to you, you've got to reach out to me. I will personally get on with you just to dig into your business with no real agenda except to figure out what's working, what's not working. If there's a fit with real estate B school, so be it. If there's not, that is 100% fine. Just go to realestatebschool.com It's a business growth strategy session. Just set it up and we will be happy. I'll be happy to personally talk to you about your business. So looking forward to that. And stay tuned for future editions of the Business Freedom Podcast where the goal really is to help you build a sustainable business that will allow you to live that life of more time, more money, less stress.
