How to Master Your Mindset, Focus & Habits - Part 1

Stacy Peterson, a high-performance coach, teaches two practices to shift your state: set an intention when entering a new space (doorway transition), and do a two-minute energy break with tapping and bouncing every 60-90 minutes. Clarity comes from developing skills to hit concrete goals, not just writing targets down.

We're going to talk today about mindset focus and habits and clarity toward your goals. So most of you probably know if you've been around for a while, that I'm a certified high performance coach through Brendon Burchard. And so I've been studying his work for like three years and it really feels like a college degree. I was telling Tara, I'm like, it's the hardest course, like I've ever taken because you're really into the neuroscience of why people do things, how they do things, how they become better, how you ask better questions. And it's just, it's a lot to study, but it's one of my favorite things. So we're going to talk about it in today's session. What do I want to become as a person and what do I really want right now in my personal and professional life? And this question isn't in your book, but you may want to write it down. Some of us, when we set goals, you know, we'll set goals such as I want to sell this many homes, I want to, you know, make money, I want to lose weight. But we really don't think about how it's going to affect us. And that's where the commitment wanes. We're Unable to achieve the goals because we're not fully committed to them. The quote from Brendan, be more intentional about who you want to become. Have vision beyond your current circumstances. Imagine your best future self, and start acting like that person today. So we're going to talk about seeking clarity more strategically and consistently in your life so you know how to show up, you know, in life when you have to make, like, the big decision. So maybe it's, should I move? Should I put my kid in this? In this school? Should I buy those shoes? I don't know. Whatever your big decisions are, if you're like me, the first thing you'd probably do is like, a pros and cons list. But really, however you're feeling, that's the bigger side of the list, right? So if I'm like, I totally want to move to Scottsdale because living in 34 below zero seems like nonsense. And so I'll make this pros list like, it's warm. I would look better with a tan. My mood's great, which helps my family, right? That's my list. And my cons list is like, well, we got to get a moving truck, and that kind of sucks, but other than that, everything's good, right? Or you ask your friends, you're like, should I. Should I take this new job, or should I take the leap and do coaching? And if your friend agrees with what you think should happen, you like that friend. You're like, you know what? Greg Sisson is so smart. I think whatever he says, I'm gonna do. And then if you ask someone else and they're like, well, have you considered this? You're like, no, you're an idiot. I just, you know, this is my list. So when you're making these big decisions, you think that that's the one decision that's going to alter everything. But honestly, most times we don't know what the big decision really was. So you may think it's moving, but maybe the big decision was really, how did I show up to my family before we wanted to move? How much time did I spend with them? How much time can I spend with them now? That's the big decision. It really wasn't the move. So a lot of times in life, we have these decisions that either may seem easy or may not, but sometimes we just have this fog, this cloud. We're just not quite sure, and we don't know why. Like, we're smart people, we're educated people, but it seems. It just seems like a cloud. And then pretty soon, you start Going through the motions. Like, well, maybe. Maybe that goal. You know what? Maybe this year wasn't the year for me to lose weight. Maybe this year wasn't it, and you start going through the motions. And what that is, it's just lack of clarity. When things don't seem thrilling anymore, like, going to work doesn't seem that awesome anymore. Talking to your team, talking to a seller or a buyer, it's like, oh, if I have to do that one more time, when really it's just lack of clarity of where you're going. So we're gonna go through this as an exercise today. Clarity is like energy. So you've heard the saying, a power plant doesn't have energy, it generates it. Same with clarity. You have to take the time to discover. You have to take the time to cultivate. It doesn't just happen. There isn't going to be some big lightning strike that comes out of the sky and you're like, boom, I got clarity. It just. It's not going to happen that way. It takes a lot of thought. When we talk about goals, we usually think, like I mentioned before, that one goal affects our whole life or one decision is that big thing that will make all the difference. But let's look at an example. I'm going to give you an example and talk about clarity toward that goal. So let's say your goal is, I want to sell 50 homes next year and make $200,000 so I can have a great life for my family. That will feel comfortable to me. Well, for most of us, it sounds like the right goal. Right? It had a number attached, a timeline. It's specific. There's a why behind it. So it seems like if I say that on January 1st, it'll totally happen. I'm gonna put it in my book. I'm gonna tell my friend about it. I'm gonna start doing some actions that'll take me there. But what happens is we get busy with everyday life, and then the goal starts to seem unclear, like, well, how do I really get there? What would I really do? So there's four ways in a goal that you can create more clarity for yourself so that you can actually achieve these goals. And the first one is called your best self. When we think about self, you have to envision yourself in the future. So if I was the person that wanted to make this money, sell these homes, make my family life better, what would that person do? How would that person show up to work? How would that person greet their team? How would that person leave their Family in the morning, Would it be in a hustle bustle, like, hurry up, get to school, grab your shoes, get your homework? Or is it like, I love you, have a good day. And not that every day can go that way, but there's an intentionality to it in how you're going to show up. So you have to envision the better version, because we all get comfortable, and pretty soon we're like, you know what? It's good enough. Like, I'm feeling comfortable. I'm fine. I really didn't need that goal this year. No one's going to notice. Like, I'm getting along, my family's healthy, I'm good. But what happens is that dream or that goal ruminates inside us. And then pretty soon, we are not satisfied with much at all. And we talked today about when you live in isolation and you're not talking about these goals anymore, and you start to feel sort of depleted in this fog. So you have to envision how your future self will show up so you can start showing up that way. Don't just envision the future goal. The second part of it is social interactions. So you have to have high situational awareness and social intelligence. It's basically how we want to interact with others. So again, are you setting intentions for how you want to be, who you want to be, what that person does, and how you're going to interact with others? So sometimes during our day, it goes like this, right? 8 to 9, I do x 9 to 10, I do x 10 to 11 x 12 to 1, right? And there's no breaks, no transitions. And then we drive home, park our car in the garage, and we're like, oh, my gosh, I have to make supper or deal with my family. And that's the people that you really want to have the best interactions, right with, right? But we've slammed our day so full now we're exhausted, and we're like, you know what? I'm just going to bed early. I'm going to check out. I'm going to watch Netflix. These guys have no idea what my day was like. I just need to deaden my mind. But really what's happening is you're not managing your transitions during the day, so you're not going to achieve your big goals. So I want you to write this down, and I really want you to try this. This is like, I didn't make this up. This is proven stuff. So the first one is a doorway transition. So every time you see a doorway and you're gonna walk through it you set an intention for yourself. So let's say I get home, I park my car in the garage, right? I'm gonna go through the door and the first thing I say to myself is like, I want to serve these people with love and show up like the mom and wife I want to be, right? Two seconds walk through the door, you know, hello, at least I've set an intention and I'm not just slamming into one more thing. Maybe your intention words are different because you want them to be the same no matter what doorway you go through. So maybe it's just something around serving others. But how many of you, when you walked through this doorway, set an intention for how you wanted to feel and the things you wanted to learn in this room today? A couple people, but not enough, right? We're just going through the motions, expecting things to be different. So try a doorway transition. Come up with something that is meaningful to you, that when you come through a door, it reminds you to show up as the person that you want to be. The second one is a two minute break. And we're all the worst at breaks. Like most realtors I feel drink like 8 ounces of fluid a day because they're like, I'm not going the bathroom in that person's house, so I'm not drinking water. Right? I mean, we don't even take water breaks or bath. Heaven forbid a bathroom break. So two minute breaks are something that you can do at the end of either a 60 minute or a 90 minute time frame. So no matter what you're doing, you could set an alarm on your phone or just get into this habit of every 90 minutes you're going to do a two minute break and I'm going to teach you what to do in your two minute break. So I need all of you to stand up and I want you just to like on a scale from 1 to 10 in your own mind, gauge your level of energy. So maybe it's a six because like you had potatoes for lunch. Maybe it's an 8 because you had a salad and you were in the sun. But you know, just get your number. The first thing that you're going to do in your two minute break is something that we call qigong. And some of you have seen this before and it looks really crazy, but it works. And this takes two minutes. So every 90 minutes you can do this. Okay? So the first thing you're going to do is you're going to tap along like your eyebrows just like a few times, then on the side of your head above your ear. I don't know why I was closing my eyes. And then above, like below your chin here. And then you're going to open up your back, your meridian back here. I have a mic on, so I can only do it with one arm. But you're really going to, like, you can either like kind of punch or you can like cup your hand like, really hard. Okay. So keep going. And if this hurts your arms, you need to exercise more. Yeah. Okay, now we're going to do our hands real quick. So you're going to cup your hands and it's going to sound like it's raining. And you're going to go up and then down and then put your shoulder down. Don't lift it. Don't crank. And just like go like this. This one feels good. Got to do it hard. Okay, Other arm. Do your shoulder really hard. Okay. The last thing you do in your little two minute exercise is you're going to bounce. So we're going to like, bounce on our feet and you're just going to kind of like move your arms. This is weird with a mic pack on and the stage making noise. And you just do this for like 30 seconds. I need to exercise. The stage is making noise. Okay, now take. Take notice of your energy. So how many of you went up, like two numbers? So you're at a five and you're at a seven. How many went up? Three, four. How many were sleeping when we started? And now they're awake. Okay. Oh, one. Okay, awesome. Have a seat. But do you see how that simple thing took two minutes? Your team's gonna think you're crazy. Doesn't matter. Teach them. But how your energy changes. So in a second, you can change your state, you can change how you're feeling. The third part of making sure you're achieving your goals and having that clarity and mindset and focus is skills development. So sometimes we want something to change, but we don't change our approach. So you heard us today talk about this spar challenge, this app where you have the $500 if you don't work out five days a week, 45 minutes a day. And the thing is, is that if you didn't change your approach to that goal, you're losing, like, a ton of money, first of all. But you're never gonna reach your goal, right? So if you want to. If you want to sell more homes, it sounds easy, do these three things. But it might be deeper than that. It might be. You have to commit to it. Like your card is going to be charged $500. If you didn't put in the 45 minutes. It might be 10pm on Monday night and you don't feel like it. But you got to get the work in because you've committed to it and you want to change. You have to develop new skills and there's a commitment to that. So whatever it might be, clarity comes from developing the skill that will get you to the goal. So we think it's the goal, right? We think it's writing down the goal, it's developing the skill that will get you to the goal that creates more clarity. And you have to obsessively develop these skills.
