One Percent Every Day To Health And Business | Real Estate B-School

Lars Hedinborg (founder, Real Estate B School) gives a motivational talk linking small, consistent daily improvements ("1% better every day", inspired by Atomic Habits) to both personal health and real-estate team success. He recounts a personal weight-loss arc—starting April 15, 99 days later (recording on July 29) he dropped from about 225.4 lb to 195.2 lb (~30 lb)—and emphasizes identity change, systems, and accountability (partner + health coach). He translates the principle into real-estate practice: maintain recruiting as an ongoing system (a virtual bench) and focus sales activity on four high-value tasks summarized by the acronym PLAN (Prospecting, Lead follow-up, Appointments, Negotiating). He closes with a call-to-action offering a free 45-minute business growth strategy session (rebstrategysession.com / realestatebschool.com) and a free 30-day pilot coaching program.

Hey there, Business Freedom podcast listeners. Lars Hedinborg here, founder of Real Estate B school and co founder of High Performance Real Estate advisors in Charlotte, North Carolina. Today I want to chat about 1% better every day and how it relates to my journey in health. I am down 30 pounds from just about 99 days ago. So I started on April 15th as I am recording this, it is July 29th. And so 1% every day was inspired by a book that I read called Atomic Habits by James Clear. And unbeknownst to most of you, I have actually lost over easily over £100, maybe £125 in the last three to four years. Here is the thing though, it is the same £25 four or five times. So I have gone through this sort of roller coaster in my health and this relates to business as well. So just hang with me. I have gone through this roller coaster in my health where I push and I challenge myself for a period of time and I achieve the thing I set out to achieve. So let's use health, for example. So I will get up to, for me, I'm about 6 foot tall. I'll get up to about 225 or so, which is 30 to 35 pounds over where I need to be in terms of optimal weight for my body composition and all of that. And so I'll push real hard to get down to 195 to 200. I'll challenge, I'll do like a 90 day, intense, focused challenge and I'll get through the challenge and then I'll kind of just go back to my old ways. So I never really changed the underlying thing that got me to be the weight that I was. And so this time I feel like it's different. So like I said, I'm 99 days in, I'm almost 100 days in. I weighed 195.2. I started out at 225.4, something like that. And the thing that's different this time is that I have made the choice to become really fit instead of challenging myself to lose weight. So in the book Atomic Habits, James Clear, there is a quote in the book that says something to the effect, you know, you should focus on becoming a runner, not training for a marathon. So a marathon is the equivalent of, you know, I'm going to take 90 days to lose 25 pounds instead of I'm just going to become a super fit person. There's one other quote from the book which I'm going to pull up here, which I think will Serve us. It really comes down to the systems that you employ to do the thing that you want to do. And this obviously relates to business as about a gazillion ways. Right. What are the four things? Well, what's the number one thing you need to do to be super successful as a real estate team? It's new business development every morning. So instead of challenging yourself and going through these fits and spurts of, you know, focusing on new business development for a week or, you know, instead of. Instead of, you know, becoming a new business developer, let me find this quote here real quick, because I think it's gonna. It's gonna hit. It'll. It'll help us understand what we're getting at here. Bear with. Here we go. You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems. And so let's use my health as an example. So the systems I put in place is, number one is accountability. Accountability is probably the most critical system when it comes to achieving anything you want in your life. And there are two forms of accountability that I put in place. Number one is that I'm doing this with my beautiful bride, Julie. We are doing this. Health. A renewed focus on our health as the thing we are. We are now physically fit, healthy people. So there is a new identity that we have that we have never really had before. We have just kind of gained weight, and then we kind of lose it over 90 days. We gain it, we lose it. And so the accountability of having someone to do this with has been really helpful. And then I also have a health coach. We are actually sharing the same health coach. So the commitment is that I am always going to have a health coach. I am not going to have a health coach during a challenge period like 90 days. I am just going to focus on this one thing. And then after 90 days, I am just going to go back to my old ways. That does not work. I have done it over and over again, over and over again, and I have proven that it doesn't work. So becoming a runner versus training for a marathon. So let's think of ways, and I want to challenge you today to think of ways of how we can apply this to your role as a real estate team leader. One area that comes to mind, like, when I look back on my journey and when I've not grown as fast or as gracefully as I wanted to, it's because I took my eye off the ball of recruiting. And so, and I see this a lot with real estate team leaders. We decide that we need to focus for a period of time intensely on bringing in some new agents. And then when we bring in two or three or four new agents, we stop that thing. And then all of a sudden these folks that we had, all this amazing potential never really translated into a sustainable part of your real estate team. And then you have to start over again and you're constantly having to lose the £25. You're having to get that system up and running and started again versus just keeping a system running and always being healthy. When it comes to maintaining a virtual bench. Maintaining a virtual bench is probably the most important thing you could do for the health of your real estate team is you always have folks that are wanting to come in and, and join you in this awesome vision that you're casting out there in the market to grow and to grow in such a way where your clients are handled in an awesomely world class fashion. And so that's one example. Another example is just in sales, you know the thing. So to be physically fit and to be really sort of healthy and vital and have energy all the time, every day, no matter what, I need to drink a gallon of water. I'm probably working out for about five to six hours a week now. Combination of cardio and strength training. I am sleeping seven and a half plus hours a night and I track my sleep. I am also meditating. I am reading my bible daily. And so there are all these things I need to do to be physically and emotionally and spiritually fit. When it comes to business, there are from a sales perspective, there's only four things that you and your, the sales folks that are on your team need to do to just get 1% better every day and build massive momentum in their business. And it's an acronym that I probably shared before on the podcast and if I haven't, here it is. It's plan. If you're taking notes or even mental notes. P for prospecting, which we call new business development. L for lead, follow up. That's following up with folks that you've already had a conversation with. A is for appointments, buyer and seller consultations, and N for negotiating contracts. And the more time you and your sales team can spend in those four activities and all offload everything else that they could possibly work on. There's probably about 12 core tasks of a real estate agent and those are the $4 productive one. And there's eight things that they're not getting really well paid to do. So when it comes to building momentum and getting 1% better every day, if you're focusing on just those four things, your business is going to multiply, it is going to build momentum, and you will get the results you're looking for. So the challenge is to look at different areas of your life and maybe it is something as simple as your faith. You know, you kind of go through periods of time where you know you are in the word and then you are not in the word, you know. So what is one thing you could do consistently that you will get a little bit closer to God every day or with your physical fitness? You know, the other thing too, When I started on this physical fitness journey, I made a commitment to walk two miles five times a week. And just by making a little commitment and doing that thing, it's really easy to walk. It takes about 30 to 40 minutes, depending on how fast you walk. Let that be your first step. Do that for 30 to 60 days before you, you know, you take it up to jog three miles before you. I got up to running five miles, you know, five times a week. But if I started with that, I would have got super sore, I would have got discouraged, and it wouldn't have been good. So what's the one thing you could do in the areas of your life where you're struggling the most right now? And that's what I would challenge you to do. And just do the first step of that thing, make a small commitment. So the 1% better every day is just making a small commitment and then having each of those little commitments as you do the thing, sort of build momentum on the next thing. And so if you're struggling in your business, if you're a real estate team leader, if you're running a small team or a big team and you don't have the time, money and stress freedom that you're looking for. I look at my life, my business life as a dance in the equation that is time freedom, money freedom, and stress freedom. So if you have not enough time to enjoy things outside of your work, you don't have enough money to enjoy those things, or you're super stressed all the time, you're just miserable to be around. There's got to be a better way. And I challenge you to look for a way to kind of change the trajectory you're on. The only thing I have to offer you is a 45 minute conversation with me personally about your business. We will talk about where you are now, what's working, what's not working, what's. We'll talk about where you want to be in two to three short years from now exactly what you want your real estate team to look like. And then number three, we'll talk about what are some of the obstacles you're seeing to going from where you are to where you want to be and what's holding you back and also what strengths do you bring to the table?
