A motivational talk from February 2017 about losing focus and productivity during December. The speaker reflects on a difficult period and emphasizes the importance of persistence and grace when performance dips.
Everyone in this group, we're all looking to do incredibly challenging and amazing things. And that's no different for me, right? You know, just because I've achieved a certain level of success, by no means am I done. And I encounter the same types of resistance that all of you encounter. And so when we work through these high performance sessions, it is really, really important that you are 100% present. Everything else is shut down. This is the type of session that you could easily dismiss it and don't do that, don't shortchange yourself and dismiss this session on clarity. So when did I decide? So mid December, I think about mid December. For whatever reason, basically I stopped working out for a four week period. I worked out twice in four weeks. I don't know if what the excuse I gave myself was. I was sleeping later, I was staying up later at night. I slipped back into watching more TV than I should watch, you know, just not any resemblance or any semblance of a high performance business person. I mean, I didn't beat my kids or my wife or anything like that, you know, so I wasn't a total slacker. But I definitely got off focus and I don't really don't know what it was. I'm sort of in the midst of trying to figure out what was behind it. And it could have been a little bit, not so much burnout, but a lot going on with the real estate business and merging the business and, you know, just doing everything we can to take that business to another level and take real estate B school to another level. I can't say exactly what it was, but I had this guy in the gym and he must have seen it in my face. I was one of the two times I was in the gym during this month. And, you know, he just looked at me and he said, you know, Lars, sometimes the grind is just the grind. And I don't know if that's an encouragement to anybody because it doesn't sound real sexy, but there are times when you just have to give yourself a little bit of grace because it's hard work. Like what we're doing is it's not selling a house or a couple houses a month or three houses a month, right? We're trying to sell 30, 40, 50 houses a month, right? That's the vision for most people on this call and to achieve that so we can have the time and money to impact the world, our relationships, our family, the community, that sort of thing. So I'm back on. So today I committed to my routine. I'M an all or nothing kind of guy, you know, so when I'm going to go through my, we're going to go through this clarity chart. So going having something to ground yourself in is really helpful when things get tough. And you know, this is a long, a long journey. You know, we want to hurry up and sort of achieve and build and scale our business or whatever that thing is. We want to hurry up and get there. But I encourage all of you to take a long view of it. Anytime I've gotten in a little bit of a funk or I've gotten off of my day to day routines, it's always been because we talked about a little bit last week about being in the gap, where it's always like a little sense of dissatisfaction. Not that anything's going wrong necessarily, but just feeling like you should be farther ahead than you are and like, where am I going? Like, what am I rushing toward? Like, what are we all rushing towards? So that's not a permission to just take your time and not have any sense of urgency around what we're, what you're building. But just to say that this isn't going to be, you know, what's the expression? Ice cream and roses or I don't even know if that's a real expression, but it's not going to be perfect.
