Moist Wound Healing - Wound Care Education

The presentation explains how maintaining a moist wound environment accelerates healing, describing several physiological mechanisms that contribute to faster tissue repair. A moist wound bed prevents scab formation, allowing keratinocytes to migrate more quickly across the surface, and traps enzymes that promote autolytic debridement. It also preserves growth factors in wound fluid, enhancing fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis, which together can make healing 3–5 times faster than in a dry wound. The speaker cautions that excessive moisture is detrimental: pooled fluid can spread onto surrounding skin, causing maceration (white, wrinkled, more permeable skin) and increasing susceptibility to trauma, irritation, and infection. Proper moisture balance is therefore essential for optimal wound care.
