Do You HAVE To Train Legs To Gain Muscle? (My Full Legs + Abs Workout)

Rob Lipsett walks through his leg and ab workout at Raw Gym in Dublin, debunking the myth that leg training spikes testosterone and growth hormone. He argues the real benefit is a strong base for overall strength and balance, not hormonal gains. Neglecting legs means training only half your body.

What's up everyone, welcome to today's video. Now this is going to be a bit of a leg day tutorial and a conversation about leg day, okay? And usually I don't actually like recording my leg days because I think, uh, they are the most difficult day in my opinion. They take a lot out of you and I like to just concentrate and not have to worry about getting those sick angles, dude. But, but comment down below if you get that reference. Today, right, we got some new toys in Raw Gym, so I gotta try them out, I gotta record them for you. So I'm gonna quickly show you them, then we're gonna go through everything, warm-up and the main exercise I do, and we're gonna have a little bit of chat at the end. So thumbs up if you like the training videos, right? But first, I'm gonna show you this. Forget the Mercedes, this is what's up right here, okay? So this is, uh, the first hack squat we've had in raw gym in a long time, and it's absolutely beautiful. It's Watson, which is in my opinion probably the best equipment you can get. Some hack squats can go either way, like they can feel awkward, but this one, she's a beaut. But we also We got over here, we got a lying hamstring curl. Last thing we got in is this leg extension, the trapezius, and we're going to be doing all these today. But first off, we are starting with barbell squats. Let's get into it. Um, so this is exercise number 3 on the leg workout. Usually I'll do about 3 compounds, so starting off with squat, then we're doing some for the hamstrings, that was straight leg deadlifts, and now we're on to hack squats. So this is a new machine in the gym. I did a few warm-up sets on it. I'm absolutely loving it. So let's get stuck in. Oh, that's warm. Let's go. Bump, drive, go, bump. Deep breaths, let's go. Drive, drive, drive! Oh man, right, so we got the main stuff out of the way, the heavy compounds. So now at this one, I go into my isolation work. So it's going to be leg extensions, palm curls, and then some calves as well. Now if you're short on time, okay, maybe you work long hours, you know, maybe you got a kid, you know, maybe you got a, you know, a lot of things going on, I would recommend maybe supersetting some of your isolation movements. Yeah, put all your concentration— or not all, but you know, put more concentration into your compounds because they're going to give you the most bang for your buck. And then, you know, you can superset these to save time. So we are gonna do leg extensions first, then ham curls, and we're gonna go between the two of these. Just one really quick tip, this is from Alberto Núñez: kind of act like you're lifting your hamstring off the pad here. That's going to hit your kind of upper quad area right here, and you'll really feel it. So trust me on that one. Shout out to Team 3DMJ, very knowledgeable guys. So we are going to finish off some abs. 3 main ab exercises that I always do are hanging leg raises, decline crunches, and cable crunches as well. Your ab training really does not have to be that excessive. Just, I do 3 sets of those exercises maybe twice a week, and usually after legs, but you know, sometimes on other days too. So one thing I like to do, it's kind of a good cue, is when I'm doing these knee raises, is touch my feet off the bar right here. You don't have to do this, but it's just like a little kind of mental cue that I do, and it helps me contract. So give it a look here. I'm doing this for educational purposes, right? Education. Yeah, education, right? So Oh, so again, you can do straight leg raises, but I find it kind of better when you just do knee raises and you're really just focusing on that whole contraction. So now I'm gonna go on to cables, some decline crunches, and then we're done. Then it's time for food. Alright, check this. Now who needs Gold's Venice when you have Raw Gym and a sunny day in Dublin? Now that's what's up. Oh, feeling glorious. But so this is where we're gonna finish the video, right? Okay, top off, Greg Plitzile, okay, trying to get a tan. Topic of today's video, so I record the leg workout, but I also like to, you know, discuss something, okay? And I think this would make for a funny video is, do you have to hit legs for a good physique? Okay, so now first of all, I will address the myth that some people say that, you know, training legs hard, it releases, you know, hormones like testosterone, growth hormone in your body, and weight training in general does that, okay? It's the equivalent of putting a teaspoon of salt in a swimming pool, okay? It's not gonna make a difference in the grand scheme of things, okay? So yes, it does boost hormones like test and GH, but again, it's not enough to notice significant changes in your physique. So if you're, you know, benching and you're increasing your bench press over time, you know, you're curling more weight, you know, you're shoulder pressing more, your upper body is gonna grow, okay, due to progressive overload. Generally speaking, in terms of your whole physique, hitting legs is going to give you that foundation, okay. Not only does it look very silly if, you know, you're top-heavy, but if you have a strong squat, that's essentially a strong base for your whole body. And, you know, your squat, if you increase that, that's essentially like a full-body movement. You know, you're going to get bigger upper back, your lower back, your whole posterior chain. Same goes for deadlifts. You're going to build up your traps. So in my opinion, hitting legs is very important, and not training your lower body is literally like not training half your body, okay. Would you only train the left side of your body, okay? Of course you wouldn't. So hit legs, enjoy it, and build that awesome aesthetic physique so you can wear those short shorts on the beach this summer. Now my legs are nothing massive, but they are balanced in terms of the rest of my physique. And that is another thing people like to comment online. If you don't have legs like Phil Heath, people are like, "You skip leg day." Okay, just get a nice balanced physique and then you're good to go. So guys, I hope you enjoyed today's video. I'm gonna head off, enjoy the sun, get some food. Leave it a thumbs up and I'll see you later on in the week.
