How To Make Money From Fitness | Dealing With Online Hate | Influencer Marketing?

In this long‑form talk recorded at Raw Gym Academy, Rob Lipsett shares his personal journey in the fitness industry and offers practical advice for creators. He begins by emphasizing a positive, optimistic mindset, describing how he mentally reframes self‑doubt and treats online hate as “publicity is good publicity,” distinguishing constructive criticism from toxic trolling. He then moves into influencer‑marketing tactics, urging creators to start small with micro‑influencers (5‑10 k followers), offering free product or tickets in exchange for authentic promotion, and highlighting the cumulative power of many modest audiences over a single mega‑influencer. Rob outlines the full spectrum of fitness‑related revenue streams—ebooks, personal training, gym ownership, seminars, apparel lines, affiliate and brand deals, fitness retreats, and online courses—explaining how seriousness and credibility translate into higher‑ticket offers. He discusses the role of women in fitness content, arguing that credibility, not body exposure, drives respect, and cites examples of successful female creators. Throughout, he stresses community building, collaboration over competition, and the importance of enjoying content creation for its own sake. He also shares the origin of his “Creator Agency” concept, born from his habit of hosting talks and connecting creators. The talk concludes with a Q&A covering competition, niche selection, and personal branding.

Hi guys, welcome to today's video. So we're in Raw Gym as usual. I'm just about to go in, give a talk to Raw Gym Academy students. It's gonna be my story in the fitness industry and finish up with a little Q&A and a few marketing tips as well. So it's gonna be a long one, stick along, give it a like, and And yeah, enjoy, get comfy. But okay, so what was the last thing we were talking about? Yeah, so again, we were kind of saying how if the glass is half full or the glass is half empty, you know, why would you look at it half empty, right? Okay, it's like, it's just when you can just choose that positivity, you can choose to be optimistic about a situation. Why would you do anything else, you know? So sometimes when you are doubting yourself, take that step back, just chill for a minute. Just catch your breath and say, "What's the point in this? What's the point in thinking like that?" You know? And so that's actually how I like stay very positive, and I just like, I just stop, I pause, I think, I say, "This is literally pointless beating myself up or being negative about this situation." So yeah. But nah, it's like some of them is like crazy psychotic, like weird, angry people, and it's like you can tell pretty easy. It's like, they're not happy. You know, they're like really putting time and energy into this, you know, and like it's like— Do you ever get really, really bad abuse online? Like, do you ever, or do you just like not go there? I don't even go there. Yeah, yeah. Do you get it though? Oh yeah, yeah, of course. Yeah, yeah, yeah. People are like, "Hey, kill yourself." And I'm like— Yeah, yeah, they're like, "You should kill yourself." And I'm like, "Thanks, buddy. I'll keep that in mind for next time." No, like honestly, growing up on the internet, it's made me like bulletproof. Like, I don't give an eff. Seriously, I don't care. Even in business and stuff, like, I get rejected, I get turned down, failures, like, anything. Like, things will flop, you know, it's just made me not care. It's like you just get so much crap thrown at you, you're just like— In the grand scheme of things. In the grand scheme of things, it's like I'm living out my dream. Like, I'm literally so grateful. So for me to get upset over a little meanie online comment That would just be ridiculous. That would be ungrateful. That would be— the audacity for me to look at like a mean comment and get upset over it when like I'm literally like achieving my dreams. Like, so it just doesn't even compare. Like, it doesn't even— it's not even a drop in the bucket. So it's just like a rattling. Yeah. It's like a rattling. Publicity is good publicity. Yeah, bring it on, man. Bring it on. And sometimes it's like you get constructive criticism. Like, there's a big difference between— you can tell quickly if you're getting like hate, someone's like, "Kill yourself," or if like you're like, "Hey man, you know, in your videos you've been coming across a bit like this recently, you know, your posts, you've been slacking." You know, some people are your subscribers and they actually care and they'll give you constructive criticism. So I think it's important to take that on board. Yeah, you can tell when someone's like mad and angry and like, "Oh, I hate my life, I want to be mean to you," or you can be like, "Hey," you can tell when someone's actually giving you constructive criticism. Yeah, first of all, start small, okay? And it's like if you get you get someone with like 5,000 followers, okay, and you give them like a full tracksuit and stuff like this, and if they even make 3 sales, that's profitable. 3 sales. Is it that hard for someone with like a couple thousand followers? 3 sales, okay, not that hard. That'll be profitable, okay. And so again, start small, and they'll probably do it for free. I know I sure did. I did it for free until I had like 20 or 30,000 or even more, like, you know. Um, so, and if someone really likes your brand, if you're actually making like really good clothes, they'll do it for free. Like, you see me like tag stuff on my story, loaded up, unless, unless I say paid partnership or something. Like, a lot of time it's free, okay? I know it's a lot of time I'm doing it for free. Like, I just love the company. Um, and so yeah, you can definitely just smart start small with that. Even if you get someone with 5 or 10,000 followers to wear your stuff for free, all they gotta do is sell like 5 products, you know? It like— I, with my creator agency, I give away loads of free tickets and I'm like, hey, just put up story, and it's like, that's not like 5 tickets, you know. So it's like, to do— to be successful at influencer marketing, you don't have to be like getting people with like millions of followers. Like, imagine you got like 10 small people with 10,000 engaged followers. That's like 100,000, and they did it for free, you know. So it's like, think about that, you know. Don't, don't play out the, the people with smaller accounts, especially if they could have like You can find people, they've got little like cult followings, like they've got really engaged, you know, followings. It's like, you know, they've just got that like 10,000 people, they're like, I love this guy, you know. Yeah, they've made it really funny or something. So yeah, definitely do not pay the small— do not dismiss the smaller guys. I feel like Joe Delaney, yeah, which is a friend of yours, yes. I feel like he's one of these guys that doesn't have a huge following, but I've been seeing his videos from the time of the Del Bros. Yeah, you know, and I'm such a big fan actually. And, uh, yeah, he's a funny guy and he's doing something that I feel like no one's doing exactly like him. Yeah, because, uh, he's not any— nowadays he's not that much into actual fitness, he's more of a personality. Yeah, of course everyone's there because, uh, he's into fitness, but, uh, yeah, I feel like, uh, this sort of channels— I don't know, I was gonna ask Do you have that kind of following as well from the beginning? Yeah, yeah, so that's like— Joe's got such a cult following. It's like, again, people that like, they have his inside jokes like Tommy D, like, you know, up the mics. So yeah, go on mics, you know. So they've got that like, you know, they've got that like inside following, they've got that little cult following. So again, I have people who have like poverty soda, George the Cat, you know, like all these like, oh, how do you make protein oats? Like, it's in one video, I can't really I was like, you just put the protein on top of the oats and put boiling water on it. So now people like still to this day comment, hey Rob, how do you make protein oats? Like, you know, it's just a joke. So it's like, again, that goes back to it. It's like people who follow you from the beginning, you build that, like, it's a weird, like, you've got the private jokes and it's like you're buds with them. So yeah, Joe's got such a cool, like, following. And that's great to build up. That means like just really engaged followers that enjoy Because I'm stringing myself up on, oh, what am I— what can I post about? What is my vision? What is my this? What is my that? It's almost stopping me from actually chilling out and taking that first step. Yeah, well, see, that's the thing. You need to like chill out. You need to build that audience first. Yeah. If you want to launch your own product. But you don't even need— like, for example, who's the CEO of Adidas or Nike? I don't know. Everyone knows LeBron James and Ronaldo though. Okay, so it's like, to be— to start a massive company, you don't need to be Insta famous. Okay, first of all, putting that out there. Okay, you can still use influencer marketing. You can get in the game if you don't even have a YouTube account. Okay, so don't worry about that. Okay, and now going back to the thing what you said about, um, you know, creating your content and stuff, just literally enjoy it. Forget, forget your You're again, you're like thinking about how am I gonna monetize this when you haven't even like started it, you know? So like, have fun, enjoy it, build that audience, get— play with it. Like, it's literally like, like in the '80s, people recorded family videos on their little cassette, cassette player. Why? Because it's fun. They weren't like getting paid from Google per view, you know? They were making home movies because it's fun. It's fun making YouTube videos, so like, do it. Do— that's the reason you should be doing it. Like, so worry about that later, and oftentimes the ideas will then come to you. Yeah, so like how I made up the idea of like Creator Agency is I was like, I'm doing all these public talks and like for other people. I was like, all that still now, all I watch is whenever I'm cooking, whenever I'm getting shower dressed, I'll have a talk like a TED Talk on Tony Robbins or whoever, just always playing in the background. It's like the soundtrack to my house, okay? I've always got people speaking, and I'm like, I should just do one of these events myself. And then I was like, hmm, yeah, what can I do? What am I into? And I was like, I'm into content creation, so I'll just bring content creators together to talk about their journey and have fun. So that idea just came to me. Yeah, easy, right? So oftentimes when you're on your path, you're on your journey, you'll get tons of ideas. Like, it'll just start coming to you. So like, let it happen, you know. And again, like, be patient. And again, focus on having fun with it, you know, and really enjoying it. Yeah, we did like— I think we got— how much time we got? We don't have as much time. I cleared my schedule. I had a date later, she totally cancelled on me. She's like, I feel sick. And I'm like, no, you don't. But yeah, so it's coming up to 6. I'm gonna go train at 6. 10, 15 minutes, something. What are some channels that you actually watch and that you enjoy because they're good content creators? There, there's a lot that I'll like stumble across. Like, I'll watch like one video here and then it'll recommend me another, recommend me this. Um, so there's like very few people that I'll like watch every video of. Like, I'll always watch all my friends, like, just stay up to date with my friends like Max, Christian, Joe, and stuff like that because like they're my actual friends. I want to see what they're doing. But like in terms of like channels, it's like, for example, I watched— just watched a documentary, a 20-30 minute documentary on like— it was on Justin Bieber. Like it was like how he grew up in the limelight. It was really interesting, like, and how like paparazzi follow him like all around his whole life and how like can drive someone insane and all this. It was really interesting. I just watch like stuff interesting, stimulating, stuff like that. And, and I've watched so much kind of documentaries and stuff on YouTube that my recommend— my recommended videos are really good. Yeah, yeah. And I watch like a lot of psychology, like John Jordan Peterson. Yeah, yeah. I think he's like— he's like— I only came across his content last year. He's probably had the biggest impact on my life this year. He's huge. I'm halfway through his book. He's blowing up. He is. He's like this psychology teacher from Toronto who puts all his lectures online. And like some of his stuff is quite controversial, but a lot of his stuff is just like, you know, basic, really good advice. Like, and he's good. I love Joe Rogan. And again, Casey Neistat, great as well. He— I like when he just— I even like when he's not doing a runaround vlog, he just like sits down and like he seems a smart guy. Gary Vaynerchuk. And you notice all like Jordan Peterson's like, what, he's like a father of two? He's like, you know, the people who are giving out really good information are all like They've got life experience, you know, they're all like older people, you know. So that goes back to what we were talking about earlier as well, like, you know, like as you get older you actually get cooler. Yeah, you swear to God you do. You get more life experience. Like, I'm gonna be sick as fuck when I'm 40 years old. I'm gonna have done it all, you know. I can't wait to be 40 in Raw, just like, yeah, getting fucked. Like, I'm just gonna be like, oh man, this is the best. But like, for real, like, so yeah, the content creators I watch, I named a few there, but a lot of it, all just like my recommended will like give me some cool stuff. Yeah. All right, let's say one or two more questions. Who's your competition? See, I don't— well, one, there's like hardly anyone in Ireland who like, even males, who do consistent YouTube. If there is, I want to be friends with them. I like it. I don't even look at it as competition. I'm like, oh great. Here's someone that I can collab with, or like vibe off, or talk to. Like, when Christian saw my channel coming up, do you think he was like, oh God, screw this guy? He's like, no, I'm gonna get him part of my company. He's like, I'm gonna collab with him, I'm gonna blow Rob up, I'm gonna get him up here. That's not how winners think. Like, no, winners think there's plenty of room at the top for everyone, you know, everyone can win. And so it's not about you pushing everyone down, it's about you bringing everyone up. And like, that's what's going to make like a champion, that's what's going to make you successful. It's really good seeing, like when I was watching Christian in 2015, he would beat Lomachenko and stuff. I remember thinking there's no one in Ireland. And then I think in 2016 I found you. I'd seen you clap with Christian and I was like, oh my God, there's someone in Ireland. Yeah, there's still no one else, not many other people that do. I know, I know. And like, it's such an open market. Even in the UK there's not many. There's a lot more in America. There's so many. America's so many. That's like why I started. I like would watch all these American YouTubers and I'm like, oh, there's no one doing it. I'll just do it. People want to see Lidl and Aldi, you know. And like, yeah, potatoes I got today. I love potatoes. So, and that's actually helped me massively because people are like, oh, who's this Irish guy, you know, doing it? Like, so it's the absolute best time for for like people like you getting into that, because you've got like Christian with the Summer Shredded Classic with the transformation class that he had. Yeah, an Irish guy won. An Irish guy won. Yeah, he trains in Rawr. Yeah, he trains in Rawr. Yeah, really cool dude as well. Yeah, Rawr. Yeah, he won the what? He won the transformation class in Christian's competition. Yeah, I know. Yeah, he like went all the way to Texas and like entered it and like won it. It was like, oh, is an Irish guy winning that? Yeah, but anyway, it brings So many different people, like you've got Marianne from the Netherlands, Mike Thorsten, you, Max. Oh yeah, all my best friends are like— In Ibiza and stuff, the way it's all come together. Yeah, oh yeah, it's like you literally feel like the world is yours, like the world's your playground. Like I can go to Amsterdam, Manchester, Liverpool, Texas, Virginia, Ibiza, you know, even in New York, California, I can just go anywhere and I'll have like a close friend that I can like stay with or go out with. So like, yeah, I think that's the beauty of content creation. I think it's amazing. But I would really— it's going back to what you said about competition— I would really like more Irish people to start getting into it. And that's like one of the reasons why I'd like— it's not enough doing this. It's like, it's there for the taking. It's like, it's got— it's gone really well for me, so I'm like, someone else, someone else can do it too, you know. There's more room, especially with girls as well. I was just gonna say, like, all the people you mentioned are Yeah, yeah, cool. Oh no, the biggest names in the fitness industry are girls. Whitney Simmons, Nikki Blackketter, like GraceFit UK. No, oh no, like Kayla Itsines. Oh no, the biggest— no, sorry, I was just because talking over here. The biggest names in fitness industry are women. Fitness industry is way easier for girls. All they have to do is put on tight pair of leggings, just get good angle. No, but for real, it's It's really— there's no— that I would actually say, um, it's like easier for girls. Like, in terms of content, like, is that true? Like, because I know this whole like Fit Fam industry is like mostly naked asses, like, you know what I mean? So like, I don't know what really my question is, but like, are girls getting taken seriously in— as in the fitness industry? As in— yeah, no, I, I I completely get you, I completely get you. So right, it's all— if you're posting a fucking dirty picture of you in your underwear when you're literally just doing a love heart emoji as a caption, you're not going to be taken seriously. But if you're like— okay, so like a really good example is Junk Grace Fit UK. Like, she makes tons of informative videos, and yeah, yeah, she's really well spoken, uh, she's smart. And like, she's also in Great Neck, and she'll post her bikini. She posts her hard work when she's on holidays. She'll post more selfies, but like, she's also putting up that really good content that gets her taken seriously. And again, like with me, I've put over 350 videos. I've spoken at every college in Ireland. I've done 350 videos. I do this, you know. It's like people see me and they— I'm going out and stuff and post an abs selfie, but it's like, oh, this guy actually takes shit seriously as well, okay? You take yourself seriously, people are going to take you seriously. So don't think you've got to sell your body to like be successful. It's actually the opposite. Like, it's actually the opposite. Like, if you take something really seriously, then people take you seriously, people invest in you. And yeah, so yeah, really good question. Yeah, really good. I think that's the only thing that would move me off from that on the social media part was like, I need the daily this. I just would not feel comfortable, although I would would like to be helpful. Yeah, yeah, I get you. Yeah, it was kind of like find your, your flow, find your niche, what you are comfortable with, you know. So yeah, no, don't think for a second you have to be this like doll, like in this bimbo. It's actually the opposite. Like, no, no one would go to our seminars, no one would, you know. So it's like, let's look at like how you make money in the fitness industry. It's ebooks, personal training, gyms, seminars, clothing, affiliate deals, sponsorships, brand deals, fitness retreats. Okay, so much fun. This is great. I love this job. But it's like, like, so, and there's even more, like, um, there's a few things. Oh yeah, like online courses, uh, again, you know, personal trainer courses like this. And like, they're all quite serious things. It's like, to be like You have to really be taken seriously to get someone to go on a fitness trip, go to a different continent to train with you. Like, that's a serious thing. Like, you're a business— you're a businessman or a businesswoman, so you've got to take yourself seriously. Yeah, people like to go away and they're like, oh, they're actually psychopaths. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Or they've literally got nothing going on in here, you know. So it's like, have fun, like, you know, take the piss out of yourself, like, but like at the end of the day, like, you know, be be someone people— be charismatic, be someone people want to follow and people will actually get some beneficial advice from. Yeah, that's awesome, right?
