Mistakes I Made As A Gym Noob

Rob Lipsett shares his worst gym mistakes as a teenager: showing up in rugby gear and a bike helmet, doing useless machine circuits, and believing carbs after 6 PM would ruin him. He went from intimidated by jacked guys to confident, and now tells new lifters to research, stay consistent, and ignore the shame.

What's up everyone? So relevant topic today as it's January and you know what that means— the January lifters are coming. And as annoying as it is to have all these new people who haven't a clue come into your gym, your temple, your place of worship, your place of swole matrimony, we all got to remember that we were all noobs at one stage too. Even me. So today I'm gonna go through a few things I did when I was a rookie. Jesus Christ, where to begin? Okay, I remember my first day at the gym. I was getting ready, I was getting ready to go. I was around like 14 or something, but, uh, bear in mind it's my first day, so I didn't have any gym gear. So, uh, I have played rugby since I was 12 years old, so I had some rugby gear. So I threw on my knee-length socks, my Lycra undershorts, my cotton Trader shorts, a rugby jersey, and a long-sleeve thermal vest with built-in shoulder pads. And shoulder pads. And shoulder pads. And shoulder pads. Shoulder pads in the gym. I may as well have had a fucking bicycle helmet to complete the look. As for the workout, it was literally just a circuit of the machines. I'd just hop on a machine, say, "Alright," strap myself in, give this a go, few reps, onto the next one. And on that day, not one muscle fiber was activated. Also, at that stage, I was Billy No Gains, so if I saw some jacked dude in the gym, I'd straight up stare at him, just, "Yeah, I want me some of that." And it wasn't even myron, like nowadays if I see some jacked dude in the gym, I'll walk straight up to him and be like, 'Hey bro, admiring your gains. We should go out sometime, party, tear shit up, know what I'm saying?' But back then it was just me being some weird little dude. And nutrition and supplements— I can't even put into words how unaware I was on that one. It was probably the equivalent of a hamster trying to do algebra. Carbs after 6 PM? No whey, bro, say. Why? Because some dude in the gym told me so. That research. That reference. And to me, whey protein was pretty much D-ball. I was like, fellas, I'm thinking about going on a cycle of protein. Yeah, protein. And of course, my friends were none the wiser. They were like, bloody lunatic, he's gonna be dead by the age of 18, Jesus. And thinking about it now, how ridiculous is that? A cycle of protein. I'm on protein. Protein's a food. It's like saying, I'm on carbohydrates, lads. I'm on fat, lads. I'm on baked beans. I'm on a bloody hardcore cycle of baked beans. So look, as you can see, I wasn't exactly the big shot back then. But the point of this video, ladies and gentlemen, is don't make fun of the January lifters. Because in a few years' time, they could be the next big thing. And for those of you who chose to start in the gym for your New Year's resolution, well done to you. You couldn't have made a better decision. Do your research, stick with it, and I guarantee you will thank yourself down the line. That's all from me today. Hope you enjoyed the video. Like, comment, subscribe, and I'll catch you next time. Keep it real.
