Running a Half Marathon with Zero Prep

Rob Lipsett runs a half marathon in Newport Beach with no training after a 15-lb weight swing from overeating. He finishes in 1 hour 41 minutes despite hills and blisters, crediting the mental toughness he built from extreme dieting and 20,000-calorie binges.

Good morning, everybody. We are here in California, Orange County to be specific. I keep nearly saying LA. And so as mentioned in the last video, we're here to do a marathon. So in the last video, we were eating a lot of calories, and then this video we're going to be burning a lot of calories. So first of all, just thank you so much for the amazing response. You guys know I love YouTube, like that is my passion, it's YouTube. There is no better feeling when you put like a good bit of work into a video, like it takes time, especially with the editing and spending a lot on the actual video, that food was expensive, and then you post it and it's well received. It is just the best feeling in the world. So the views are obviously great, the engagement, but the comments, you know, everyone like talking about the last one and what a journey it's been. Just, just thank you, thank you. It just feels great. And then another question I had is about like my progress, my physique, uh, how it was after that. Well, you saw my physique at the end of the video. In that video, between the morning and the night, I went up just under 15 pounds. So a lot of that is going to be from food volume, the actual food in your stomach, and then a lot of it's going to be from glycogen, carbohydrates, and then a lot of it's going to be from water. So the water in the food and then the water I was drinking. I drank so much liquids that day to help get the food down. And then I was, uh, still quite heavy the following day. I think I was like 6 pounds up. I don't know where the other 8 pounds went overnight. Then the following day I was about like 8 pounds up, then the day after like 4. And yeah, just now I'm pretty much back to my normal weight, give or take 1 or 2 pounds. It's pretty crazy. Of course my appetite leading up to it, like the 2 days, 3 days before it, I was eating very little. And then after, it's the same, very little. So like, your weekly calories like kind of balances out a little bit. And so that's it, yeah, that's the science behind overfeeding. Your body also moves a lot more, your NEAT increases, you just fidget and move more because your body has so much spare energy to expend. You're more active, had some pretty good gym sessions the following week as well. And yeah, your body has a habit of just regulating itself if you're under-eating as well and if you're overeating. So we're back to normal now and we're definitely carved up and ready for this marathon. Keep saying marathon, I'm only doing the half marathon this weekend. Marathon one day for sure. We're here in Newport Beach, just staying in the Marriott, really nice, and we're just about to go for a big group breakfast. So I've been here, me and Ryan have been here about like a day extra than everyone else. All the Americans just arrived in last night, so this is our first time kind of seeing everyone. So we're gonna go down to breakfast now, this place called Plums Cafe, and yeah, just so to see the whole team. I haven't seen like Christian, a lot of the other guys since, since January when I was in Houston. So always makes me happy to see the Alphalete crew. Got the Alphalete on me, of course. Let's go down and let's eat. You're probably like, how's this guy still eating? It's been a few days. Also, one thing I love when the hotel has a desk set up, like if I have that, I can— I'm happy. I can just stay somewhere for as long as I want. Tell the vlog, where are we going?
We're going for breakfast.
You guys hungry? Starving. Let's go! Looks like we're trying to get into the club. Oh my God. Hey Rob! All right, so we are in Plum's Cafe. This is like getting into a nightclub. The place is absolutely packed, so it must be pretty good. But the gang is all here. We're all very hungry. Oh, outdoor seating as well. Very nice.
This is a Dutch baby, so think a little bit of flour, a little bit of eggs, and then you want to sprinkle a little bit of powdered sugar, a little bit of lemon squeeze, and it's the— like something that's up my alley. Getting a breakfast— I don't know, and then sometimes I'm like, is it a little bit lemon?
This is like a little pastry. You want syrup? Oh yeah. Oh, Jesus Christ, I forgot syrup. I typically We don't do syrup, sorry. Okay, am I doing this pizza style or knife and fork? Probably knife and fork, it's a little bit more civilized. All right, let's go, let's go. Are they as good as fuel cakes? Yeah, I don't think so. Bro, that lemon, the lemon makes it.
The lemon makes it.
That is classic. Wow, dig in, boys. That was awesome. That is— get that Red Bull in her. That is dense. That is dense. So I went for the steak and eggs, 2 eggs, so side up, a nice beautiful steak with a massive lump of butter on it, and apparently these are potatoes. This looks amazing. Everyone's happy and fed. Just finished up breakfast with the team. We are all absolutely stuffed. Like, I am extremely full, so that's us nice and carved up for the race. I'm doing the 5K tonight. Everyone's doing the 5K, but I'm doing the 5K and also the half marathon tomorrow as well, so I can afford to eat a little bit more. But Plum's Cafe in Newport Beach, 10 out of 10. Honestly, really good. Yo, yo!
Yo, yo, welcome! This is Rob Lipsett and this is Ashley Flores. Welcome to my vlog.
It's like an English accent or something. We are here at the race expo, the OC Lifestyle and Fitness Expo. We're about to check in, get our bibs, get registered for the race. I'm doing 2 races, 5K. This guy impersonating me. 5K, 13K, 26 miles. We're running day and day. So we're getting checked in. I'm doing 2 races, 5K 5K and the half marathon. Let's go! It is time to go run the 5K. We'd be doing this every single week in Marbella, so I'm gonna breeze this. This is the warm-up. That's what I'm wearing, by the way. I got the red shorts, the Core tee. Represent! So everyone is doing this in the whole group, so it's gonna be like a bit of fun, bit of a laugh. And then tomorrow morning we're up at like 5 AM for the select few to run the half marathon. So now let's go have some fun. We're here at the Fitness Running Festival. We're all about to do our 5K, which virtually everyone on the team is doing. We're all doing a little shot beforehand as well. We're going to go for dinner afterwards, so this is like the fun run. Everyone's doing it. Let's take these shots and go for a little run. Easy. So the course is starting to open up a little bit. Nice and chill now, plenty of room. Now it's enjoyable. Look at this, just running through California. That's the vibe. Yeah. All right, all done. 26 minutes. Nice little warm-up. We smashed it. We are definitely We came first, safe to say. We don't know where everybody else is, but it just started raining as we got to the finish line, so it's looking like Ireland out here now. But we're going to find the crew and we're going to get something to eat and then rest up before the real race tomorrow. But I'm feeling pretty confident, you know, that was nice and easy. The old Marbella runs are being paying off, so let's see how we get on in the half marathon. How'd you find that? Good, amazing. Okay, you ready for tomorrow? We just did an hour walk, so So all easy. Yeah, there we go. Good for tomorrow. Christian, you ready for tomorrow? Uh, no, we'll be all right. It's me and Christian in a couple hours. Like, it's at 5 in the morning. Nervous? Yeah, I'm pretty nervous. Genuinely nervous. Oh man, it's, uh, me and Christian's first time ever running this distance. Brian's done it before, so I'm interested to see how we go. But yeah, yeah, I did without, but yeah. So now we are going back to the hotel and we're just going to have dinner in the Hotel tonight, nice and chill. And that is the end of the day, people. So finished up the 5K, went down to the hotel. We were gonna go out for like a nice fancy dinner and then everyone was like wrecked. It's like, just do hotel. And it was actually awesome, like really good, like, like restaurant standard but in the hotel lobby. Surprisingly good. Got some tacos, and now I'm gonna try to get to sleep as early as possible because we are up at 4:45 AM. Ubers are leaving here at 5 AM. We're gonna run the longest distance I've ever run. I'm really excited to see Christian run as well. Like, he's the same, he is— he's not ran more than like 12K in his life. And yeah, so it's going to be kind of fun getting up all early as well. But let's see how I get on. Gonna try and get a good sleep in, then try to get some more carbs in the morning, like some gels, some waffles, or whatever we got. I got these like little I'll show you. This is gonna be my breakfast tomorrow. Nothing too filling. Get that into us and then we run for our lives. So see you guys in a couple hours. Bye. Alright, let's go! Yo, this is actually hype. 5 AM, everyone getting warmed up, walking up to the start line. Taylor Swift blasting. All right, so Mick Bear, let's see what you're cooking up. It's actually good for a gel. Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. And we are off. All right, so 2 kilometers in, I feel all right. Just 10 more of them, that's it. We got this. We are on 7 kilometers, so the way I'm doing it, I'm like, once I get to 10, it's halfway, and then we just have to do it again. This is such a beautiful course. Running through this, like, such American neighborhood. It's like a movie. I'm gonna smash another gel into me and then just finish this strong. But it's an amazing atmosphere. Look at those views. First impression, first half marathon, it's going well. Last kilometer, and that's it. That's the finish line. Oh my God, I've died. That's it. I think we got 1 hour 45. First time ever, ever, ever running that distance. The longest I've run is 12K, so I'm pretty happy with sub-2. Feeling good. What an atmosphere. 1 hour 41. I've been dreaming of this. Happy Dad has been keeping me going. So let's see, Fruit Punch tastes better after a half marathon. Unbelievable day, great atmosphere here with the boys at the finish line. Endorphins flowing. So now the plan for today, I guess we're gonna just enjoy O'Sean. We've got a fancy-ass dinner booked tonight. Life is good. First half marathon in the books.
Feeling nice. I was gonna do the egg white omelette.
We're back at the hotel. I am delirious. I am so hungry. But we walked in and there was a buffet available, so God is on our side. And so I just went in, got a big fat stack of pancakes, fruit, orange juice, coffee, French toast. We're back on the mend. So it literally feels like it's like midnight, it's actually like what, 10 AM? I'm gonna eat this now, a little power nap, and then get on with the day. But I'm feeling so happy, so fulfilled after running that marathon, half marathon. I'm very happy with my time. You've probably never seen me take a hot bath on this channel. I'm like, are they still a thing? Do people still take baths? Oh my God, my feet were just— my lower body is just in pain. I'm like, I need to, I need to do something. Blisters on my We just had a little photo shoot at the beach there, covered in sand. I was like, maybe a bath is what's up. Anyways, we're gonna quickly review the run. Really happy with that. I was going for 2 hours, uh, as like I just seen people post on social media that that's like solid for a half marathon. I got 1:41, so that's, that's pretty— I didn't even think that was like that much better than 2 hours, but apparently it is. And you know, everyone's like saying that's insane on social, especially for me. I'm not a runner, I just do like a 5K every Sunday, and then I'll do like one run myself during the week. The furthest I've ran is like 12K, like at most. And so I'm really happy with that. Like, I'm like, I don't know if I've got like good running genetics or I've just got that dog in me. I'm just like, I'm able to mentally push myself whatever it is, like be it dieting down to like 6% body fat or eating 20,000 calories or running a half marathon in 1 hour, 40 minutes, whatever, I can just like, or even if I like, there's something in life I need to achieve, like I need to get this villa in Marbella, or I want my life to look this way. When I set my mind to it, I can just unlock something that I'm like, this is, this is gonna happen. So during that race, I was like, okay, I'm gonna just get full of pre-workout, full of caffeine, full of stimulus. I'm just gonna put the foot down, and it went really well, and that's it. And so everyone, everyone in the comments on Instagram actually was asking me for my splits. I'm like, I don't even know what that is. I'm like, what? Everyone's like, what was your pace, bro? I'm like, all I thought that mattered was the total time elapsed time. But that's like all I mean, I don't even know when I'm running. I don't even check my pace. Like, I'm not like, oh, I need to slow down here or speed. I'm just like, I'm gonna run as fast as I can until I'm over the finish line. Average pace. 4:43 per kilometer. Uh, elapsed time 1:42, of course, because like the first minute when you're in the queue with everyone, you can't really like— can't run. Fastest split was 4:21 per kilometer. There is times when the elevation— like it's pretty much uphill, it's actually quite a hilly course. There's times like especially at the very, very end where there's like elevation 13 and you're just on You're on kilometer 19 and I was— that was the hardest. I guess you could see it's the slowest. I also think I like stopped for a Gatorade as well and went to the bathroom too. I was just like, this is tough. And then the last one, you're just like, let's go. Right in the middle was pretty good as well. I actually got like chatting to a few people, so that was nice as well. And that's it. Could I improve on that time if I got a running coach and like actually focus on pacing? Perhaps. And but the next thing I want to do, I'm like, see, after that I was like, I was like dead. I was like, my feet, blisters, my feet were bleeding. And I was like, I was dead. I'm like, imagine getting to the end of that and being like, I have to run that again. Like a full marathon, I'm like, could I do it? But then again, I've never thought I'd be able to run a half marathon. So I guess people, it's like you don't believe you can do it and then you do it. So, and then what's else here? Yeah, so that's pretty much it. So the plan now, I'm gonna probably just crash, crash out in the room for a little bit. I'm not gonna eat. I ate like so much pancakes and fruit afterwards, orange juice, a load of carbs. I'm just gonna chill now till dinner, and then we're going to a really fancy place called like Jolie and the Belle. So it's on like the beach, but it's really nice. And then this is like— this is our last night with the crew, then it's just like me and Ryan for Monday and Tuesday. But really happy with how that went, and like, I'm glad like people who are into running are like, oh, respect. Like, so that's, that's really nice. So yeah, all in all, there's no better feeling than working towards something, putting in a good effort, and then relaxing afterwards. So I'm very happy. Yo, I hate this spicy drink. I gave it to him. I'm like, oh no way, I can't handle it, bro. It's not nice at all, bro. I would have— I would have had that. Rob Lipsett is here. All right guys, finishing this up and Joely, which is actually in Huntington Beach, which is a place I've been to like 14 years ago when I was on a student exchange in America. So a little side quest there. But anyways, feeling very satisfied after today. Everyone smashed it. The vibes are immaculate. There's nothing better than working towards something with a group. You all come together, you achieve it, and then you celebrate afterwards. You earn it. There's no worse than going out and you don't earn it, you know, you don't feel like you deserve it. But right now I think everyone feels like they deserve it. Finishing things off here. I'll see you in the next one. Keep reeling, later. Sì, ti amo.
