Rob Lipsett lifts because he enjoys it, not for looks. Triathletes and marathoners often tell him to quit lifting to get faster, but he argues strength training has value beyond aesthetics and can coexist with endurance work if you balance training volume carefully.
This is what a lot of people in the endurance world— they don't understand that people enjoy lifting. Yeah, I think that people think that you just lift to be jacked or you just lift to look a certain way and there's no value in that. But they don't, because they might not have experienced it. Like triathletes, ultra runners, marathon runners I've spoken to, a lot of them, oh, why don't you just stop lifting and get faster? Because I enjoy the lifting. Exactly. The whole point, that's the whole reason I do all these things, is because I enjoy them in and of themselves. Yes, it means I need to compromise here and compromise there and not just chuck shit at the wall and hope that something sticks, because you need to be careful with how much volume you take on.
