What I Learned In 2018 (Real Talk)

In this year‑in‑review vlog, Rob Lipsett reflects on 2018 as his most successful year in business and personal growth. He shares a series of concrete lessons he distilled from his experiences, ranging from the impact of the people you surround yourself with, the healing power of time, the direct correlation between effort and results, and the danger of perfectionism and procrastination. He emphasizes the importance of being selfish with one’s time while remaining generous in other aspects of life, trusting oneself above all, letting go of grudges, and avoiding spreading oneself too thin by focusing on a few core projects (a physical book and a profitable app). He also discusses the value of solitude, the pursuit of happiness as the ultimate goal, maintaining a positive mindset, and the resilience needed to push through tough times. Interwoven throughout are anecdotes from travel, fitness, and his growing YouTube channel, as well as calls to action for viewers to comment on their own lessons and to stay tuned for upcoming content.

Alright, we're going. Yo, what's up everyone? Welcome to today's video. I want to start off by saying a big well done. We all made it. 2018 is over and this video is going to be a recap video. I'm going to go over a few lessons that I learned in 2018 and also someone that I'm going to be working with closely as an editor, they also made me a really cool recap video that I'm going to play after I finish sitting down and talking with you guys. So before I go on to the lessons I learned in 2018, I want you guys to comment down below what is the main thing that you learned in 2018. Genuinely interested, and I think this can make for a really good comment section. So of course I've written the points down as I do with absolutely everything. I say that in pretty much every video is write things down, they're more likely to happen. It's easier to just have them planned out in front of you. So to just quickly recap, 2018 was one of the best years of my life, especially in terms of business and personal growth. In terms of, you know, finances, like, on the board, that was the best year. And in terms of growth, that was amazing. Personal growth, I think I learned more about myself this year than any other year. It's crazy. So it was an amazing year, but I'm still left thinking that I've got so much more left in me and there's just so much more things I can do. So for some reason, like, I think everyone's feeling it. I think everyone's like, 2019 is the year. 2018, that was like a lesson learning year, and like 2019, like, this is the one. I know we say that every year, but I don't know, that's just the vibe I'm feeling. A lot of stuff here that I'm gonna talk about is stuff that I've spoken about in previous videos, but it's just topics that I've really kind of found to be so true that I wanna bring up again, and there is also some stuff that I wanna place more emphasis on. Anyways, let's get into it. Keep note on who you spend your time with, okay? You are who you surround yourself with. We all know this. There's a quote and it's like, "Show me your friends and I'll show you who you are." But I found this even more exact. There'd be periods of my year when I'd be like spending it with certain people and I'd be like, "Okay, my life that month was kind of like this." Then I'd be spending it with other people and I'd be like, "Wow, that month was like a really productive month." So it's like, it's not just a thing that it's like your whole life in general, like who you surround yourself with. I found it to be quite exact. It's like week by week, month by month. Like, you spend a week with these people, you're gonna do this. If you spend a month with these people, you're gonna do this. So it's, it's, it's actually an immediate thing of who you surround yourself with. So if you're not with the right people, like, do it this week. Start networking, start going to the right events, going to right places, because it will change your life very fast. It'll change your life just as it happens. Time heals and solves nearly everything. Now, of course, if you've got a problem in your life, you need to to tackle it head-on. You need to address it. You can't just sweep it under the carpet. But even if you do these things, even if you do your very best to fix a problem, sometimes it still just will take a bit of time. So that is, that is a huge one that I've learned. And again, you know, I just want to restate the fact that it's like you can do everything, you can do your best, but sometimes time is the only healer. No one owes you anything. No one's gonna do the work for you. And help isn't on its way. Time goes very fast, and the older you get, the faster it seems to go. Now, like, I know that 60 seconds will always be 60 seconds or whatever it may be, but when you get a little bit older, things just— the year tends to go faster. Like, or even in general, like, everyone is just saying, like, 2018, that year just disappeared, didn't even seem real. Everyone's feeling the same thing. So I actually looked into the science behind it Again, that's like just what I do. I'm a curious guy. And don't quote me on this, I'm no time scientist, but apparently it's because our brain gets used to routine and that speeds things up. And the older we get, the more routine we have, maybe a more stable job, you know, your wife and kids and all that. And it's like, let's say you have a weekend getaway and on Friday, Saturday, Sunday you do so much, you know, you really plan productive itinerary, you know, you have loads of fun, you're like, Wow, Friday seems like, you know, it was weeks ago. And I remember a weekend that I went on in Mykonos— there's going to be a few clips of that in the recap video— that we did so much that weekend. It was like 3 short days, like it honestly seemed like a full week. So, so not only does time go so fast and we really need to use every single minute, but also do new things, do new experiences, and you know, time will kind of seem to slow down a little bit and you just have a better week. Better life in general. Work is everything and you create your own life. It's so exact. Like, if you put in 91.5% effort and focus into something, you're going to get like 91.5% back. Like, the trade-off in anything in life, like the gym, work, business, everything, it's just like, it's so exact. Like, you just can't cheat the grind, you can't cheat the hustle. I hate using those words, hustle and grind. I, I just not fond of them. But it's like whatever you put in, you're going to get exactly out. It goes for relationships, everything. So just life is work, and the harder you work at it, the better it will be. Chasing perfection may leave you with nothing, and finished is better than perfect. Just for example, before I was about to do this video, I was like, oh, I'm getting my hair cut at 3 o'clock. Oh, maybe I should wait till then. And I was like, Rob, sit down, do the fucking video. Like, seriously, no one's going to give a shit. See it if there's half a centimeter off the side of your head. That's something that I'm guilty of. That ties into, um, procrastination as well. We're always just looking for an excuse not to do something, and then it ends up never getting done. So forget the perfect moment, just go for it now, okay? Odds are the thing that you're worrying about, no one's even gonna notice. I've experienced this so much when I'm working with other photographers and videographers, when I'm creating some content And oftentimes they'll be like worrying over the settings and stuff, and I'll be like, we're missing, you know, a really good opportunity. Just put it in auto, just put it in auto, no one's going to care. And it's like they're messing around with the exposure, the aperture, everything, and then you miss the shot. Okay, so forget about being perfect and just focus on getting the job done. Being selfish with your time is a good thing. Now, being generous in other aspects of life is one of the best things you can do. I love, you know, getting dinner for people. I love letting people stay in my place. Obviously being generous is a good thing, but with your own personal development, your your own time. You need to be selfish, and you need to focus on yourself and being the best version of yourself. Imagine this, right? Imagine in a world if we all just focus on ourselves and being the best version of ourselves. In turn, the world would become a better place. And if you focus on being the best you can be, everyone around you is going to have a great time. Everyone's going to be like, oh, Rob has been really working on himself, he's a pleasure to be around. You know, so don't be afraid of being selfish and working on yourself and, you know, being like, "Sorry, I got to do this, I got to do that," you know, being selfish with my time. So being selfish is a good thing within reason. Like, you can take all of these points and you could literally, like, say the opposite and you'd be right in a sense. Like, context is everything. Tough times don't last, but tough people do. That is actually written on the wall in Raw Gym. It's one of my favorite quotes. And basically, you've gone through everything life has thrown at you so far. Like everything. No matter how bad you think you've had it, no matter, you know, what circumstances you want to change, you've gotten through everything. You've got a 100% success rate at this. Okay. So sometimes we just need to remind ourselves of that. And I think it was David Goggins. I was watching a talk with him and Joe Rogan or something, and he was talking about his Marine training with Hell Week. And there was times where, you know, you'd be passing out, you'd be close to being unconscious, you would be unconscious. And he'd be like, this isn't going to last forever. He's like, there's going to come a time where I'm going to be lying in a warm bed eating a hot meal, you know. And, and that's, that's true. It's like, if it doesn't kill you, it's just going to make you stronger. Uh, so remember that, you know, tough times don't last. I'm going to try to go through these a little bit quicker because I do have a big travel recap video at the end of this. But next point is, there truly is a positive in everything, and sometimes it's It's so hard to see this. Sometimes we're just buried by stress. You know, we're angry, we're confused, and we just can't see positive in anything. But you need to challenge yourself to seek out that positive. It's honestly going to help any situation so much more. Again, it's so much easier said than done, but— Let's, let's see the positive in this situation. Someone's ringing to give me some terrific news. Back in a second. That actually was great news. You can only really trust yourself. You know, I don't want to say trust no one. You're gonna have to put your trust in people. Like, if you've got like a business partner or staff or family or anything, you're gonna have to place some trust in them. But you can only actually trust yourself. And what I mean by it, it's like, let's say you're going to meet someone and it's like, you got to be here at this time, you know. You don't know what's going to happen on their journey on the way there. Like, sometimes it's out of their control. So the only thing that's actually in your control is yourself. So therefore, you can only really trust yourself. And you know, that's kind of putting it nicely. Like, there is people that are so close to you and they will fuck you over very quickly. That's just reality of life. But I'm not saying be an untrusting person, but all I'm saying is at the end of the day, like, literally the only person you can trust yourself is yourself. So just remember that one. And again, you know, I don't want that to come across as negative. I do have faith in the world. I do have faith in other people. Just sometimes, you know, you gotta have a little bit of reality, bit of realism. Do not hold grudges. You think you're like, "Ooh, I'm gonna hold this grudge on someone. That's really gonna teach them a lesson." No, you're literally just holding yourself back, okay? The only person you're doing a disservice to is yourself. So, you know, if someone's wronged you in any way, just be like, "Okay, you know, lesson learned. I'm on my way now." Just be like, "Peace be with you," and then you're gone. You know, so just holding grudges is just so pointless. Here's a very important one, okay? Don't spread yourself too thinly. You don't want to be a mile wide and an inch deep. And now here's an example. Every week, every single week, like, I'll get an email, I'll get a phone call, I'll get something, and people want to like offer me something. It's like, what do you think about this new business venture? Do you want to be part of this? Do you want to do a brand deal with this? You know, do you want to make a video on this? Do you want to do a collab like this? Every single week. And it's like, imagine I did like 52 different things in the year, you know, I'd never master one thing. You would never actually be the master of one thing. So there's gonna be times in your life where you just need to shut everything else off, you need to focus on that one thing. So this year my focus was on writing a book, a physical book that is of course available, link in the description box. It is going to launch, it's going to be on shelves next week. So crazy. And then also building a very profitable app to I'm going to be doing a 30-day challenge with that as well, start of January. So more on that soon. But so they were like two of my main focuses this year. So it's like, imagine if I like picked 52 different things, like literally nothing would get done. Nothing would get done, right? You probably do a load of stuff for other people, okay? So don't spread yourself too thinly and don't take on too many things at once. You'll end up doing nothing. That's a, that's a big one right there. That is actually big facts right there. This is also another big one, okay? Um, I'm yet to give an apartment tour of this place, I know that, but this is my third year of living on my own. And some people say, I wouldn't like that. Does it get lonely? You know, I don't think you should do this. Maybe you should spend more time with other people. No. Okay. The strong man is strongest when he is alone. Okay. I'm pretty sure that's a quote by Friedrich Schiller. I could be wrong, but basically if your happiness is always dependent on external factors and external resources, you're not truly happy. You're not actually happy with yourself. So learn to be alone, learn to enjoy your own company, learn to be happy with yourself because if you find yourself, you're unhappy when you're on your own, well then like there's some problems that you need to address and come to terms with. So not only do I think is being able to be alone, it's great, it's great for like relationships if you want to build a healthy relationship, but it also just makes you a strong independent person. Yeah, I'll definitely continue to live on my own for the coming year. I'm loving it. I'm also way too weird to live with anyone else. Like, if someone lived with me, they'd be like, "This guy is Patrick Bateman." Like, "This guy is full-blown insane." Nah, I'm just joking, right? Not really. But yeah, I love living on my own. I'm going to wrap things up here before the recap video starts playing. Being happy is always the number one goal. I don't even think I need to bring that up. I think that goes without saying. So this is just a reminder because I've said it 100 times. I'm going to say it 101 times. Do what makes you happy, okay? That is my message to you. Again, comment down below any lessons you learned in 2018, and thank you so much for being part of an incredible year. Roll the montage. 2017, or even the end of 2016, was the hardest I ever worked in my life because I was laying the foundations. This channel is just in such a good place to even, you know, blow up even more. And guys, I cannot wait for 2018. Got some cool videos planned this week and some big news. So yeah, excited. And chat soon, keep it real. Yo, what's going on everyone? So today's date is the 31st of December, 2017. So I want to start vlogging today. So right now my focus is mainly on my YouTube channel because that's kind of like my own reality TV show. You can direct, edit, and star in it yourself. So I'm having a lot of fun with that. I absolutely love it and it makes me really happy getting to do what I do. So find that thing that makes you happy and then do that. Like, you know, that's life. Success is being happy. It doesn't matter what you do because everyone's going to determine success in a different way. And also, live a life that makes other people happy as well. I've said before and I've said it again, if you're kind of looking for a bit more fulfillment in life, if you feel like you're kind of missing something, you feel a bit empty inside— and sometimes I feel like that too— and when I do feel like that, it's usually when I have nothing to work towards. Because if you don't have something to work towards, you can be a bit lost in life and have no sense of direction. If you put some good into this world, you make it a little better place. If you improve yourself and improve other people's lives, the world's gonna be a better place, and in turn, you're gonna have a good time. You need to find something that you really enjoy working towards and that's worth stressing over, that's worth challenging yourself, and then when you pull it off, it just feels amazing. That is happiness, people. Iced coconut coffee. And this view. All right, so what a morning. Um, like, what a way to start your day, not only with like a bit of exercise but also the view too. A part of me has been traveling a lot this summer, and quite frankly, I'm tired. But then I said, you know what, Rob, this won't last forever. When you're 50 or 60 years old, Kygo, or whoever it is, is not going to be contacting you to fly you out to Ibiza to come make videos with him. Embrace it. So I said, Rob, stop being a little bitch and get on that flight. That's exactly what I did. Whenever you're feeling overwhelmed, you need to turn that stress into adrenaline, okay? You need to say to yourself, like, I'm not gonna let this get to me, I'm gonna rise above this, and this is what is gonna separate me from the rest. If you actually take anything from this video, is tomorrow or this evening, go out and do something that scares you. Have that conversation that you know you don't want to have, but you know you have to have it. Go up and, you know, talk to that guy or girl that you've had your eye on and you just want to introduce yourself. Just get started on that new business adventure you've just really been trying to launch, but you just have that feeling inside, that uncomfortable feeling that makes you not want to do it. Okay, go and do it. What's going on, Barcelona? Yes, the people! Rob Lipsett, the sickest cunt I've ever met in my life. Let's go, come on, halfway, 6, come on, 7. 3 more, last 3. Dig, dig. That's it. Let's keep going. Push, push, push. That's it. No! You know when you're just feeling good, you're feeling strong, you're feeling good energy, you're feeling the pump, you like the way you look, and you're just like, I ain't leaving. I'm not fucking leaving. Alphalete aren't going, Myprotein aren't going. Whose booth are you going to be at? I'm going to be at the fucking Rob Lipsett booth. That's where I'm going to be at. There's plenty of room at the top for everyone. You know, everyone can win. And so it's not about you pushing everyone down, it's about you bringing everyone up. And like, that's what's going to make like a champion. That's what's going to make you successful. Being able to give back to your family, um, that's probably one of the best feelings you can, you can really do. It's all about the Rob Lipsett Game Plan, which you can pre-order right now. This is our view. Two pools because one is not enough. Does this villa get any better? I'm so lucky that I can actually call that my job. It's a dream come true. And I was on YouTube the other night and I ended up looking at some of my first ever videos, and it's nice to look back and, you know, see where you come from. If you take anything from this, okay, when an opportunity presents itself to you, you gotta make the most out of it. And I am so grateful to have over 400,000 people hit that subscribe button. Even saying that out loud is just insane to me. Keep it real, I love you all, and I am just forever grateful for having you to follow me along on this crazy journey.
