Move Right with Sachin Patel

A short YouTube monologue by Sachin Patel (Living Light Metabolic Coach) emphasizing that muscle tone/volume, joint mobility, and proprioception are essential for metabolic health. The speaker advocates for varied, joyful movement across the day (strength, mobility, balance, outdoor activity) and practical lifestyle choices to maintain function and longevity.

Hello, my friends. It's Satya and hope. You're awesome. No discussion about metabolic health would be complete unless we talk about motion and mobility and muscles. So it's important for us to recognize the importance of all of these things. We need good muscle tone and muscle volume. That's an excellent predictor for metabolic function. We also need to have mobility and range of motion, which means that we have to be able to move through a full range of motion as a healthy human being and having a healthy skeletal system. So it's not just about muscles, it's also about joints and how much we can mobilize and move these joints. And then it's the coordination of these systems. So having strong muscles and having excellent joints, the interface between that is proprioception, balance, and coordination. So we need to know how to move these systems and get them to work together. And that's where the nervous system comes in, in coordinating this beautiful balance. So it's important for us to build muscle, it's important for us to have good mobility, and it's also important for us to have agility and proprioception. And that's basically this feedback loop between our joints and our brain that prevents us from falling and injuring and hurting ourselves, which is one of the important considerations as we age. We don't want to fall because that can lead to a whole host of other challenges. So when it comes to movement, one of the things that I suggest is having variety. So this doesn't mean just weightlifting. You know, in my past, all I would do is lift weights because that's all I cared about. I just wanted to put on as much muscle as I possibly could. I didn't really focus on mobility. I wasn't really focused on proprioception. As long as I could bench and squat, then I was in a good place in my own mind. But as I've gotten older and wiser, I've realized that mobility is super important. So I want to be able to move my joints through a full range of motion. My posture is really important because I want to have excellent function in my systems, and that works better when I have healthy posture. And I also want to make. Make sure I have good proprioception because then I can catch myself before I fall, and then I can make small corrections that prevent me from having an injury. And that way I can keep moving my entire life instead of wearing things down prematurely and then needing joint replacements or having chronic injuries that nag me from moving. So we wanna move safely, we wanna move consistently, and we wanna move throughout the day as much as we can. So find different activities. We call this joyful movement. Find various activities, do things that keep you active, that keep you flexible, that keep you on your toes, so to speak. And that's where you're going to find that you get the biggest return on your investment. So if you're only lifting weights, I suggest that you switch things up. If you're only doing yoga and flexibility and proprioception, then add some muscle onto your frame, which certainly yoga can do as well. I encourage you to go for hikes in the woods, spend some time outdoors, breathe in that beautiful fresh air, because that's also going to help you build agility and proprioception, and also help relax your nervous system as well, which, as we know, is important for our metabolic system to burn fat. So one of the things that I learned many years ago is that in blue zones, where people live to an extraordinarily long period of time, where there's a higher number of people that live to being over 100, so people live extraordinarily long, they move throughout the day. They don't have gym memberships, they're not running marathons. Okay. They're not winning bench press competitions. What they're doing is they are active throughout their day as much as possible. So, you know, pick the further parking spot. Right. Carry the bags when you're at the grocery store instead of using a cart. Carry things up the stairs instead of taking the elevator. If that's a practical solution for you. These are things that are going to keep you active and keep you functional and help raise your metabolic function. So I hope that helps. I want to encourage you to move joyfully, to move through your full ranges of motion, pack on some muscle and have fun while you're doing it. All right, here's to your metabolic health. Talk to you soon. Bye for now.
