3 Big Moves: Your Next Level, Trip to Italy, and Top 3 Priorities
Louis Massaro walks moving-company owners through three moves: price the lifestyle you want and work backward to quarterly targets, use vacations to build systems that run without you, and pick three priorities, block time, and measure progress. The math comes first.
Hey, my friends, it's Louis Massaro. And welcome to a Three Big Moves edition of the Moving Mastery Podcast.

Sometimes I'll share what's working in my life and what I'm doing to succeed at a higher level. And we'll also share what some of our clients are struggling with and how we're overcoming that to get them back to the point where they're crushing it. We'll also take some listener questions. Anything that's going to help you on your journey to reach that next level of success in your moving business, we'll be going over in the Three Big Moves. In this episode, we'll be covering your next level, what that is for you, what that means. You'll hear me talk a lot about, you know, getting to the next level. We're going to talk about what your next level is. We're also going to talk about my recent trip to Italy and how that sparked ideas of all the vacations I took while I was in the business and how I led up to that point. And we're going to talk about your top three priorities, where you need to be focusing, where you need to be putting your attention, and what's really going to help you move your business forward. And, and this is all in this week's Three Big Moves.
Part one, your next level of success. You know, you'll hear me talk a lot about getting to that next level. Right? But what does that mean for you? Because it's different for everybody. Right. You know, next level really isn't a number. You know, if anybody that's, you know, been. Been around me knows that I'm all about the numbers, you know, I keep a painting in my office that's all numbers, if you may have seen it in a video before. But for me, if someone ever came into my office and was to give me a plan or a strategy and tell me, you know, how much something was, and they said a lot or, you know, not too much. Right. How much is it going to cost us? Not too much. Well, I said not too much isn't a number. You know, a lot isn't a number. What is the number? And the same idea is true for establishing your next level. Right. Because the next level in itself isn't necessarily a place. There's no place called the next level. Right? Right. There might be Louis's next level. There might be your next level, but that has to be determined by you what that is. And the reason I'm talking about this is because, you know, recently we were working with, you know, one of our coaching clients who has very big dreams, very big aspirations, but didn't necessarily know what it is that they wanted. They didn't necessarily know how to. How much money specifically they want to make. They just said, I want to make a lot of money. And when I asked what that number is, the number was $5 million a year. So I said, okay, so how did you come up with that number? And I said, well, it just seems like a good number. And we started to backtrack and really look at what it takes to live the life that you want to live, right? Because there's, you know, there's. There's a good. You know, setting a high goal is good in a sense, but if you're setting an unnecessarily high goal, all it's going to do is just keep you constantly chasing that carrot and never achieving it, never getting to a point where you feel satisfied. And that might be what sparks a lot of people that. That hunger. But identifying what the target is will. Will allow you to be more precise in your planning, be more strategic in your approach of how you get there. So I want you to discover what your next level is, right? What is it going to take for you to feel like you've really made it? Right? And let's start by talking about money. I mean, you know, first and foremost, you know, you're in business to make money, right? You also want to be able to thrive in life as well. But let's talk about money, because it's very important that you set your targets correctly, because otherwise you're gonna make decisions in your business that may not be in line with where you're really trying to go, right? And at the end of the day, why is it you're in business.
You're in business to make money. So let's talk about how much that is. I mean, if you've never sat down and really thought about it, that's what I'm challenging you to do today. Because it's a powerful, powerful tool, right? You know, when I first started my business, I was 19 years old, and I said to myself, you know what? I want to make $400,000 a year. That's my goal. And when I say, by the way, when I say make $400,000 a year, I'm talking about personal net income for me, not what the company makes, right? The company's gonna need to make a lot more than that for me to be able to make that or for you to be able to make that. So, you know, it really, in the big scheme of things, it's not so important what your gross numbers are in your business. What's important is what your net is, what your. What you're able to actually take home, your. Your owner compensation. And for me, that number was 400,000. I figured, you know what? I'll save 200 and I'll spend 200. Right? It just, it felt like a good number. I. I didn't really put too much, you know, thought into it. I didn't really, you know, figure why I needed that. I didn't establish, you know, what I was actually going to buy with the 200,000 that I was going to spend every year versus save every year. But I had that as a target, and I had that as a goal. And now I was able to hit that goal early on, and I set my sights higher. I said, okay, well, you know, if I was able to do that, let me. Let me go to a million, right? And the point I'm trying to make is that when you identify where your target is.
You can now back into a plan to get there. Right? You know, I'll talk to a lot of people who, you know, have. They want to expand, they want to open new locations, or they're a local moving company and they want to get into long distance. New coaching client the other day said, louis, I want to get into long distance. I want to get into commercial moves. And I said, okay, well, let's talk about it. What's the ultimate goal? Right? So, like, what are you trying to make? What are you trying to accomplish? And after having the conversation, we discovered that he can do. He could reach his financial goals by staying doing what he's doing now, which is local moves at a very, you know, doing a very good job, great customer service, great reputation, and large quantity of moves. And, you know, why go take on a whole nother line of business just to be able to try to make some more money? Because it's not, you know, more isn't always better. Just because you're. You're going to open an additional location doesn't mean that you personally are going to make more money, right? So, you know, whatever your goals are, that's why we're talking about your next level. Because there's no right or wrong. I mean, I said my first goal was, you know, 400,000, then it was a million, then it was 2 million, and you know, it was. It doesn't really matter what mine is, and it doesn't matter what other people are saying out there. What matters is what is it you're trying to accomplish? And it's not money that you're trying to accomplish. It's the lifestyle that you're trying to accomplish. It's the freedom that you're trying to accomplish. You want to be able to live your life and do what you want to do, when you want to do it, where you want to do it with, who you want to do it with. And the money is what is going to buy you that freedom and that ability to do that. So, you know, whether you're at, you know, your goal right now is, hey, listen, I just want to make six figures a year, Louis. I want to be able to just make 100,000 and make six figures a year. Or maybe you're in the six figure category, which, you know, it's a big range, right? Six figures, anywhere from 100,000 to 900,000 and change. And you want to go to seven figures, right? Maybe you're at seven and you want to go to eight. The idea is that it's important not to just pick that number out of a hat. And when you back into what you really need, you can now strategically plan your mission, strategically plan the projects that you choose to take on in your business and keep a streamlined focus. So if you start thinking about what it is you want in your life, right, you know, financially, how much, how much would you like to be able to spend? You know, what, what are the things that you want to buy? What type of home do you want to live in? What kind of cars do you want to drive? You know, when you fly, do you want to fly first class? Do you want to fly private? Do you want to take the bus? I mean, I, you know, there's no, you know, you don't have to have big, luxurious aspirations and goals. The key is to know what it is. And once you know all these things that, these things, let's just say call them what they are, things that you want in your life, well, then go figure out how much it's going to cost to get those things right. You know, you want to, you know, you want a million dollar house, it's not going to cost you a million dollars out of your pocket. It's going to cost you a down payment, and it's going to cost you a mortgage payment, right? You want a car, Are you going to lease it or are you going to buy it? You Want to send your kids to private school? Well, what is the tuition every single month? You want to, you know, retire by a certain age? How much are you with a certain amount of money to be able to continue the lifestyle that you want to live? What does that number look like? So what I would suggest is if you've never done this exercise.
It'S powerful to see because. And I'm going to tell you what it is in a minute. But when you really put pen to paper and look at what it's going to cost you to live the life you want to live, you'd be really surprised that sometimes it's not even close to how much you think, right, that you can live the life you want to live with less. And once you know that number, then you could have a realistic target. I mean, the whole point of setting goals, the whole point of setting targets is to hit them. It's not to, you know, be like a, you know, have a carrot out in front of your face, like you're at the track and, you know, just chasing the, Chasing the carrot. Constantly, constantly, constantly chasing the carrot. You want to be able to get the carrot, eat the carrot, right? You want to be able to reach your goals and enjoy your goals. So setting them is really important. So here's what I suggest you do.
Go shopping. Go shopping and price out everything you want, right? Figure out what kind of house you want to live in. You know, go. Go drive around and go in some open houses and like, you know what? This is nice, right? And then maybe do something a little bit smaller and be like, is this still nice or do I need that bigger one to feel good? Right? Like, what do I want? There's no right or wrong. And nobody's knocking you for having big, big dreams and aspirations. And, you know, sometimes you don't even need to share this with anybody, right? You know, if you come from a, you know, if you're surrounded by people who kind of put you down because you have big goals and big ideas and they give you that whole, like, you know, who do you think you are? Type of thing and, you know, to where you don't deserve to live the life you want to live, you need to then, you know, keep it to yourself because guess what? You do deserve that. And just because the people around you don't feel that you can get there or don't feel that that's practical or reasonable doesn't mean that you should let them put out your flame. So again, go shopping in the sense. Don't buy anything but do a little like window shopping, if you will, and figure out what it's going to cost, right? That car you want, go find out what it would cost to buy it, you know, what the payments would be, what it would cost to lease it. You know, how many vacations do you want to take per year? You know, what kind of hotels do you want to stay in? Do you want to stay in, you know, $500 night hotels? You want to say in, you know, 800, 1500, like what, you know, what is your ideal vacation spot look like? Go look at what it will actually cost you to live the life you want to live. And for me, I put that in a spreadsheet a long time ago and basically wrote down everything I wanted and then had a spreadsheet with what it was going to cost me to get it. Right, right. With down payments, with monthly payments, and then I backed into, okay, well, this is the kind of money that I need to make if I want to live this lifestyle. And it's such a powerful tool. I mean, I know this might sound really simple right now, but you know, think about the feeling of reaching a goal. Think about the accomplishment, getting there. You know, when you go to work every day and you work hard and you don't really see an end in sight, right. It's just, you know, it's just another day on the grind. It's a whole different feeling than when you're working towards something that you know is attainable. So, you know, while you're doing this, I suggest that you think about what you want, you know, in other areas of your life too. What, what type of free time do you want? How much time do you want to take off? What do you want to do for fun? On what about your health? You know, what, what kind of shape do you want to be in your relationships? Maybe you have some relationships that you need to work on or develop or relationships that you want to, you know, bring into your life and then, you know, you have your personal growth too. What, what, you know, what issues do you have that you want to overcome? Right? Do you know that maybe you have a, maybe a temper problem or an anger problem that, you know, has caused a lot of issues in your life? You know, maybe set a goal to overcome that and then contribution, right? What do you want to do to contribute to help, you know, others and society? You know, as a moving company, you know, there's organizations like, you know, Move for Hunger where you could very easily.
You know, without costing yourself a lot of money, help out you know, people in need through an organization, through your moving company. So what I'm getting at is here is to just take a look at your life as a whole, figure out what it is you want and what the next level looks like for you. So I want you to get out a piece of paper. If you're driving, don't do this.
You know, if you're on the elliptical machine, don't do this. Just get out a piece of paper and write your. My next level, right? And kind of draw it out like what that looks like for you. Because if you don't map it out, you'll never get there. You know, if we all just get in a boat and say, you know what the destination is? North, Right? Let's just go north. That's. That's the top we're going to go up. Everybody's going up. We're going north. Well, we're all going to end up in totally different places. But if you design exactly where you want to go, then you back into it, then you take a look at that and say, okay.
What do I need to do in the next 20 years to make this my goal? Right? You might say, louis, I want this now. I don't want to wait 20 years. Do me a favor, write down the 20 years, okay? Write down your 20 year goal, where you want to be in 20 years, how much money you want to be making, how much you want to be worth, how much you have in cash reserves, where you want to be living, what you want to be driving, the vacations you want to take, everything. And then from there, you'll back that into a five year goal, okay? And then we'll go from the five year goal, we'll go into a one year goal. And then from the one year goal, then we really start to break it down and get tactical in. Okay, let's break this down by quarter to figure out what needs to get done for me to head to that 20 year goal. Because something really, you know, special happens when, when you set a 20 year goal, all of a sudden you realize, you know what? I've got a of lot, a lot of time to get there. And maybe I could actually shoot higher than what I originally thought. I mean, If I have 20 years to do this, I could shoot even higher. But what we do is we, you know, we set these goals, like in the next month or in the next year, I'm gonna make all this stuff happen. And, you know, we tend to set our sights lower than what they really could be because we you know, we overestimate what we can do in a short period of time and we underestimate what we could do in a long period of time, right? So as you start to look at that, you'll be able to really establish, alright, what is it that I'm working on, what's really important, what's going to help me get here and what's a total waste of my time right now that I shouldn't be working on. So before you dive too deep in this podcast and start learning strategies and going out there and implementing them and putting them in your business and, you know, increasing profits and thriving in your life and just, you know, taking it to the next level, determine what the next level is for you.
Part 2 My trip to Italy.
So I just got back from, from a few weeks in Italy and as I was there, it really, you know, I'm always thinking about, you know, different ways and ideas and things that I could share with you guys to, you know, help you get to that next level in your business, in your life. And, you know, we were down on the Amafi coast over, you know, the Positano area, and I started thinking about how grateful I was to, you know, be there and started to kind of think back at all of the vacations that I had taken throughout the years in the moving business and that because of the moving business that I was able to take, I'm still able to take. So, you know, it started to, I started to look back because it wasn't always that way, right When I, when I first got in the business, it was just grind, grind, grind. I mean, end of the month, you know, I was sleeping at the office for three to five nights in a row because it was so busy. Summertime, same way. And I'm sharing this information with you because I know it's the middle of summer now, I know it's the middle of season, and I want to just kind of share what trips and vacations did for me over the years and how they made me a better business person and obviously less stressed. We all know that happens, but, you know, we need to accept the fact that by giving our minds the time to rest and recoup, we start to think clearer, we start to think better, we're able to zoom out and look at the big picture, look at what's really important. And for me, I think there's nothing more important for you guys than to start making that part of your process. Right? You know, depending on where you are in your journey in this business, you may or may not view yourself as a CEO in the business, right? You may call yourself that, you may have it on the title, but do you envision yourself as the CEO of the company? The person that's directing the company where it needs to go and not necessarily working in the company, but working on the company to create a, you know, a business that's just generating income for you, your partners and taking care of your employees. So, you know, vacationing is a big part of that. And there's a couple, couple types of vacations, right? There's like a total disconnect, right? Off the grid. Don't, don't call me, don't text me. There's that type of vacation. And you know, you could go on vacation and still be plugged in, still be on your email, still be on text, still be on phone calls, and then there's vacations and trips for planning purposes. You know, I'll talk about that too. You know, for really being strategic. But starting off in my business, it was, you know, it really started with being able to take one day off, right? Like, you know, being able to take a Sunday off and still have the phones forwarded to my cell phone as I went and, you know, did something locally, right? Whether it was take a day trip or, you know, I don't know, go to a spa and get a massage or, you know, whatever. It was, it was like one day, that's all I felt I could take, right? And then that, that progressed and you know, then it was like, okay, I could do a weekend, right? I could take a weekend off, still have the phone on. You know, emails at the time weren't really a thing. And you know, then I remember taking my first week long vacation going down to Mexico for a week. And it was, I mean.
It was like a, you know, it was, it just felt at that point like I made it right. You know, I mean, since then I've, I've been back many times and bigger, different trips. But at that point it was like, wow, like I've been working all this time for this, right? You know, five star resort. I mean, just total, total luxury, total. You know, it just again felt like I had been working for some reason. And then, you know, the reason that I was able to do that at that one point is that, you know, I had systems in place, I had processes in place. I trusted my staff to take care of things while I was away. You know, I remember, you know, getting there and putting my, putting my phone in the safe, but giving my office the number to the hotel where I was, just in case there was an emergency, they could reach me. And, you know, from that point forward, I said, you know what? I need to make this part of, like, part of my routine, right? This is because I came back totally recharged, totally focused, you know, just ready to, you know, ready to conquer the world, it felt like, right? And, you know, know, moving forward, you know, in this podcast, you'll hear me talk a lot about systems and processes and, you know, if you've been through any of my programs, you know, it's all about that. And that's what really allows things to work without you, right to where you could work on the business and not necessarily in the business. And what that means is that you could remove yourself for a week, two weeks, a month at a time, and the business will still run. Your role is to come in and make things better, to make improvements, to strategize on new ways to expand and make more money and become more efficient. And by taking a vacation, it's really going to allow you to clear your mind. I know there's a lot of people that hold on really tight and have that sense of control and feel like, I can't leave. If I leave, this will fall apart. And I don't want you to desert your business. I don't want you to, you know, walk away and just say, you know what, I need to get away. I don't care. But I also don't want you to get burnt out. I also don't want you to get to a point where you just don't feel like doing it anymore. I want you to, you know, be able to enjoy working on your business and, you know, planning those trips. It's crucial. You know, for me, I, you know, at my biggest point, where we were, you know, we were doing 20 million a year, we, you know, I had an office with my main office, my call center was, you know, we had over 50 sales reps, we had 10 customer service agents. We had, I mean, we had about 70 plus people just in the office. That doesn't include movers, that doesn't include other locations. That was just in the main office and, you know, booking 12,000 moves a year. And, you know, I would go away for, you know, two weeks, three weeks at a time, you know, a month at a time. And everything ran right because I had built it and developed it that way. So the reason I'm sharing this is because you may feel like you're really far from that point where you can do that, but if you look at it now and say, that's where I want to get to, and you start to lay the foundation of what you need to get there, which I can tell you is solid processes. In other words, people know exactly what they need to do. There's checks and balances in place to make sure that they get done. And then you get good people to run those processes, right? And then little by little, you start to remove yourself from certain day to day tasks, right? Things that you used to do. You start to remove yourself the same way. When you know, you start, it happens like when you first start the business, you wear all the hats, you do everything right, you're the dispatcher, you're the salesperson, you are the warehouse manager, the billings department, I mean, everything, you're doing it all. And over time, you back out of that little by little, right? But when you back out of it, you want to start doing it in a way where you know that those people are doing it exactly how you want it done, right? Because what are you really worried about when it comes to leaving the office? What are you really worried about when, you know, you think about not being there? It's the lack of control. It's, you know, being worried that someone's going to mess up, that they're going to do something wrong. Well, think about what those things are, you know. Yes, there's some very different and unique circumstances that may pop up that you, you know, maybe you haven't experienced yet. But what I can tell you is that once, you know, you know, listen, we've had it all happen. And I'm sure you've had some crazy, crazy stories yourself, you know, trucks flipping over and just, you know, stories that when you get the phone call, you're like, you just can't believe it's happening. And at some point you just have to start accepting the fact that, you know what, even though I've seen a lot, I haven't seen it all. And there'll be something else that happens along the way, but for the most part, for the day to day operations, things run smoothly or should be running smoothly. And to be able to prepare yourself to have other people run those functions is just going to allow you to keep stepping away. Now, you may say, Louis, I'm not a vacation type. I don't want to go away. I don't want to, you know, I'm on a mission here. I have a very short window of how, when I want to accomplish the things that I want to accomplish. And you know, if that's you. What I could tell you is this. Start by doing, taking trips for planning purposes. And I'll give you an example. So I used to go and stay one or two nights at a resort, you know, within 30 minutes of where I lived. And I would go there and bring my financials for the month, bring all that information, and I go out and lay by the pool and do it by the pool, right? And sit by the pool, order some food and be in a really nice environment, right? Really, you know, just top notch, luxurious environment. Because that's where I wanted to be, that's the lifestyle that I wanted to live. And by taking the time to focus on my business in a place where I feel good, in a place where I feel calm as opposed to trying to do it in my office, you know, with a ton of people there, you know, walking by and coming in and phones ringing. So you know what, Let me go do my big picture thinking. My CEO thinking like a CEO would do it, right? They're not, you know, they're not stressed out, hovered over a couple pieces of paper trying to figure out their numbers, right? So I said, you know what, I'm gonna start making this something that's like a pleasurable experience. I'm gonna go spend the night, maybe two nights depending, and I'm gonna, you know, stay somewhere really nice and plan and strategize and think about ways to improve my business in an environment where I felt the abundance, in an environment where I felt good. In the environment where anything that I needed, there was someone that can get it for me, right? If I was hungry and I wanted something to eat, somebody's there to go get it for me. If I'm thirsty, they're gonna get it for me, right?
And that's another type of trip that I would highly advise you start doing. You know, even if it's just a one day thing.
You'D be surprised. You know, what you can get out of yourself in a new environment. And if you're constantly at the office, you know, office, home, office, home, office, home, and you know, you have a lot of people at your office and you know, can't really get the peace and quiet you need. And maybe you go home and can't get the peace and quiet you need, you know, you can go do that. And if you have a partner in your business, go with your partner, right? Spend the time, go there. I mean, I, I over these weekends that I used to do this, you know, part of the, like one day I would have, you know, a Top, you know, somebody in management come down that I needed to talk to about a certain issue and I'd have them come down to the hotel and have lunch by the pool and just make it a nice enjoyable time. So I'm just trying to share this with you because, you know, it's, there's a luxury aspect to taking a vacation, but there's also a practical aspect to taking not only a vacation that you're planning your business and you're strategizing on your business, but also, you know, vacations to just let the mind clear, let the mind relax, right? Let it let go and recharge your batteries, right? And then come back fully charged, ready to go. And that's how you really start taking your business to the next level. Because you know what, if you're burnt out and you have no energy, it's not going to get you far. All right, so it's the middle of season. If you can't make it out of town soon, plan to do it as soon as season is over. Go plan now, right? You know, if you're, if you're married, go, go sit with your spouse. Plan a vacation for right after season. You know, if you're wanting to do a, you know, a strategic planning and strategy, you know, a couple days somewhere and you have a partner, plan that and go do that. You know, if you have a friend in a different business, they might not even be in the moving business or maybe you have a friend that owns another moving company. You know, maybe the two of you go away and spend a weekend somewhere in a relaxing environment and you know, talk through ideas and strategize and think of different ways to do it. You know, whether that's, you know, wherever it may be, wherever is a relaxing environment for you, you know, that's a key to getting to the next level. Go plan that trip.
Part three Top three priorities. You know, it's really easy in the moving business to become, you know, reactive to the day to day situations. And you know, sometimes it feels like there's just a never ending list of things that you need to get done as a business owner. As you know, in your personal life, it's just ongoing. And it doesn't help that nowadays you just have information flying at you from every different which way, right? I mean, you open your inbox, I mean, everybody's wanting your attention there. And then, you know, in the middle of the day, maybe you happen to open up Facebook or you know, you go on social media somehow and then you have those distractions and then you are listening to your employees and all their urgent matters and all their things that happen to be important to them at the moment. It might seem important to the company.
It's important to establish what really matters as the leader of the company. You need to be the one that's, you know, more of the, you know, if you think about a battlefield and you think about the general, the general's in his tent, right? Planning, strategizing, focusing on what they need to win. That needs to be you. You don't need to be out running around crazy, you know, in the front lines. That's not where you want to be. And if that's where you are now, because it's, it's, you know, you're either just starting out or you've just gotten used to being there for a lot of years, you know, it might be time to look at starting to back yourself out of that situation. And, you know, in part one, we talked about getting to your next level. What that is, and being able to establish your priorities and focus on those priorities is what's going to help you get there. And typically, it'd be very easy to sit with you and say, all right, let's talk about what you have going on. What are your priorities Right now? You might rattle off a huge list.
Me, I have a to do list that as long as can be and has always been as long as can be and will just continue to be as long as can be. But those aren't my priorities, right? Being able to look at tasks versus, you know, projects and priorities that are going to really move the needle forward towards you. Reaching your goals is crucial if you're going to reach that next level of success. And this goes for anybody at any level, in any position. Establishing your top three priorities is going to allow you to have the focus you need to drive forward. So, you know, I don't know what that is for you at this moment, but what I want you to do is think about that. I want you to think about, if I can only work on three things, what would those be? If I had three things that, you know, would just make the biggest impact to my business. Not like, I need to get this little task done or I need to, you know, check this thing off my to do list, or I need to reply to this person because I know they're waiting for a response from me in their email. If you weren't worried about everybody else and their priorities, because that's really what your inbox is. It's a nice. You Know, a nice place for everybody else to send their priorities to you, right? Those aren't your priorities. Those are other people's priorities. So maybe it's time you start looking at it that way and let go of that burden and that feeling of, I have to respond, I have to respond now. You want to be obviously responsible with your emails and respond when you need to, but those aren't. Those emails aren't going to drive you towards your goals. That's not what's going to make the biggest impact to your business, for your customers, for your employees, for your bottom line. It's establishing, all right, what is it we need right now? If we could accomplish, you know, three big things, right? If we can make three big moves in the next quarter, right? It's a very good time to look at that, you know, quarterly goals and what would those be? And depending on where you are in your business, maybe, you know, maybe generating leads and getting more leads is a top priority. You know, maybe selling more moves is a top priority. You know, it could be maybe reviews or training your movers or getting your numbers and your, your reports and your profit and loss and all that on point, right? Customer service, opening a new division. I mean, that's, you know, that's really for you to sit down and say, okay, what if we resolve three big things? If we take care of three big projects.
How will that affect the rest of the business and figure out what those are? So let me give you an example. So let's say someone who just needs business right now, right? You know, they'd be focused on getting leads, selling and, you know, maybe customer reviews, right? They want to make sure that they're getting the reviews so they could build up their business. There's a lot of other stuff that still needs to happen in the business, but if you put your attention on those three things, if those happen to be yours and you focus on those, and I don't just mean in a general sense, you need to break down your, you know, those priorities into specific measurable results, right? But where you put your attention is, is what's going to flourish, right? If your attention is scattered and all over the place, then that's, you know, and that's not a result of, you know, some people say, well, I'm just kind of like that. You know, I'm just all over the place. And, you know, I like to challenge that and kind of argue with that and say, you know, what if you're more intentional about what the priorities are and you get clear about what the priorities are. It becomes much easier to not be all over the place. But if you don't have kind of a guiding light, we'll all be all over the place. You know, if you're. If your day consists of showing up, opening up the emails and seeing what's firing your way, or wait until people come to your door with issues and problems or what, waiting for the phone call to ring to see what fire you can put out, that's not leading your company. Right. And I say that with, you know, total respect. I say that with total compassion for your situation because I understand what it's like to be there and I know a lot of people are running their business that way. But I'm challenging you to take a step back and say, you know what, let's let me start working on what matters and then let me eliminate, automate, or delegate everything else. Right? And if you can eliminate and you can't automate certain things and there's nobody to delegate to, then, you know, what, Block time on your calendar to work on loose ends. I mean, you know, what you're working on first thing in the morning, what you're working on throughout the day should be moving your company forward, not just like little stuff that needs to get done. Yes. Emails need to get responded to. Yes. Bills need to get paid. Yes. You know, you need to get the insurance quotes and whatever else is on your list, but take those, batch them all into a few hour time, block a few times a week, knock all those out, and spend the rest of your time focusing on the big three, the top three priorities. Right? So maybe right now you have a customer service issue, you know, you have a claims issue.
You know, it'd be really important to focus on that, to say, you know what, if we were to resolve this, if we were to get this under control.
We would get better reviews, we would, you know, be able to book more jobs. It would help our sales. Right. It's a matter of zooming out and looking at what the real, real issues and the real, real opportunities are. Right. And if you don't zoom out and look at it from a, from a broader view. Right. Let's just say, for example, at a football game, right. If you're on the field, it's much harder to see what's going on in the big picture than it is from up in the owner's box, right. Where you could see the big picture. I want you to go up to the owner's box, look at the big picture and say, what do I Need to accomplish what three big things do I need to accomplish in the next three months? Okay. And.
You may want to be tempted to add to that list, but if you. If you just pick three really big things, right.
It'll transform your business like you would not believe. It'll allow you to have a level of focus that maybe you don't have right now or maybe you've experienced at one point. But, you know, it takes work to stay there. It takes work to stay, you know, focused. And you allowed yourself to slip back. Back into that reactive state. You know, you allowed yourself to slip back into, you know, focusing on other people's urgencies and other people's priorities and forgot to be intentional about what your priorities are. So, you know, I can tell you that this is one of the things that, you know, we. We definitely work on with, you know, right away. I mean, with. With any. Anybody we work with right away, we need to establish top three priorities. What are the goals? What are we working on? And let's start knocking those things out, right? Let's spend our days working on what matters and not just being busy. Because there's a big difference between, you know, having a checklist of things to do during the day and getting those all done. That feels good. I mean, it does, right? I mean, you know, it's proven that just checking stuff off your to do list gives you, like, a dopamine rush. You know, chemicals in your brain shoot off and they fire, and, you know, it's like the reward center gets all lit up that you, you know, accomplish something, right? So we get stuck in this trap of like, let me clear my inbox, let me clear my to do list, and we forget to back out and look at the big picture. All right? So again, what you want to do is you want to take a look at where you're at right now, all right? What opportunities do you have within your current vision, right. Right now, within your company? Not like, let me go out and open another office. Are there any things that need to get resolved? Right? Big, big issues that need to get resolved. Maybe you need to put a mover training program in place, right? Maybe you have a lot of damage. You know, maybe you need to, you know, do a reward program for your movers to be able to incentivize them to do a good job, right? Maybe you need more reviews online. Maybe, you know, maybe you don't have any. Or maybe your reviews are low. You know, look at these priorities as, like, missions, like three big missions that you're going to go on and then take everything else and just kind of put it in a little bucket, you know, to where you just block some time and just knock out those loose ends, right? Instead of being reactive and just constantly on your email all day long, block some time at the end of the day to respond to emails, right? So unless you're in customer service or unless you're in sales to where you're you're selling and dealing with customer issues directly in your inbox, there's no reason that you should be in that inbox all day. There's no reason you should be getting alerted every time you get an email, right? If you want to get to that next level, and I know you do, or you wouldn't be listening to this, it's going to take focus and in order to get focused you have to get rid of all the distractions. And in order to get rid of all the distractions, you have to become very, very clear on what the priorities are and start working on those.
