SEO or Pay-Per-Click for Moving Companies?
Louis Massaro breaks down SEO versus PPC for moving companies. SEO takes months but builds long-term, while PPC gets leads fast but needs tight targeting and a strong sales process. He paid $30,000 to start SEO in 2007 and recommends established companies invest in SEO, newer ones start with PPC.

So before we get started, I just want to let you know we got Moving Sales Academy live coming up March 15th through 17th, Phoenix, Arizona. For more information, go to moving seminar.com that's moving seminar.com. alright, so let me just get situated here. I got you guys right here on Instagram. What's going on? I see you there. And I got you guys over here on Facebook. Make sure we got everything set up here. All right, so I want to talk about pay per click marketing versus SEO for moving companies. Which one should you be doing? Which one's going to give you a better return on your investment? SEO is search engine optimization. It's basically doing things on your website to allow it to be ranked within the search results of Google or Bing without paying for any leads. It's basically.
You know, if you go and you type in moving companies in your area, whoever's showing up on that first page without paying for ads, it's SEO that's getting them there, right? So pay per click ppc. By the way, guys, I'm going back and forth here, Instagram and Facebook. If you see me kind of looking away.
I got this kind of set up here. Pay per click is PPC marketing, right? So that's like Google AdWords, Bing Ads. You know, with those you're able to pay and go right to the top, right? And a lot of people, you know, struggle with which one's better, which ones to do. So I wanted to talk about that because, you know, the question is, Louis, which one should I be doing for my moving company? And it really depends on where you're at and what you have going on, right? Because, you know, it's important that.
You know, you establish what you're really trying to accomplish. You know, for short term, you definitely need pay per click. For long term, you need SEO. But that doesn't mean that it's for everybody. You know, by the way, if you want to learn everything about SEO, everything about pay per click marketing, you definitely need to come out to Moving Sales Academy live, March 15th through 17th. Just go to movingseminar.com that's movingseminar.com or click on the link on this page to learn everything about it. I've actually got Brian Bloom, founder of Mover Search Marketing, who's the expert for moving companies in SEO and pay per click, coming out there to, you know, spend some time to teach you exactly what you need to do to manage all this. Even without, you know, a web guy or, you know, someone that's kind of, you know, giving you a, you know, you know, here's what you need, here's what you don't need. Because let me tell you what happened to me when I started with SEO, you know, back in, you know, 2007, I think it was, you know, the Yellow Pages stopped working, and I needed to learn Internet marketing. So one of the first things that I started doing was looking into SEO. And meanwhile, I paid a company huge amounts of money, huge, 30 grand up front, to be exact, to do SEO on my site, which at the time, I didn't know anything that they were talking about. They brought me in for a meeting, they sat me down. They. They're like, we need to do this, we need to do that. And it all seems so confusing. And I just knew that I needed to find a way to generate more business because things were starting to decline with Yellow Pages, right? So fast forward, I said, you know what? I'm spending a lot of money and I don't know what's going on. I need to learn everything there is about SEO, everything there is about pay per click, so that I'm not held hostage by a, you know, a web guy, right? Someone who's the expert that's telling me all these kind of fancy terms that I don't know anything about. Right? I need to know that. And you need to know that as well, right? Because a lot of times, you know, when we're unsure about something or we don't do something, it's because we don't necessarily have the confidence in that. Right. I know a lot of moving companies will say, louis, I tried pay per click, I tried AdWords. It's way too expensive, and I had to stop. And that's true. That can happen if it's not set up properly, if it's not managed properly, and if you're not running it into a strong sales process. Right? I mean, that's a big part of it as well. So, you know, it's important to realize that once you understand what it is, right? Because it's not this big magical thing. And once you understand pay per click and once you understand SEO, you could make better decisions on how you choose to use that as a form of lead generation in your business, right? Because that's really what it's all about. You want to build trust and generate leads with all your marketing. That's what it's all about is building trust and generating leads. That's it, right? So, you know, here's what I'll tell you. If you're considering like should I do SEO, should I do pay per click? Let me give you kind of an example of the two, then it'll help you to decide. So you know SEO is an investment, right? The money that you spend. By the way, give me a thumbs up. If you guys, anybody's doing SEO or pay per click marketing, give me a thumbs up. Let me know what you're doing here in the comments. But SEO is an investment, right? Meaning when you spend money to a.
Someone to handle your SEO for you or you decide to invest in the time to do it yourself. Because if you're doing it yourself, it's still an investment. You're choosing to spend your time doing that, investing your time.
Over doing something else that you could be doing with your time to generate more money. So either way, never mistake the time that you spend on something for money because the time that you spend usually is more valuable than the money you could spend to do it. But either way, it's an investment that's not going to pay off right away. You're not going to see results instantly from SEO, right? So Search Engine optimization, if you're just joining us, is what we're talking about versus pay per click marketing, like AdWords, Bing Ads, and where you should be spending your money as a moving company, alright? And it's all to build trust and capture leads. That's really all you're trying to accomplish. So with SEO, it's a long term game, right? I mean, you have to get started in order to start seeing results. And it's going to be something that's, that's long term, right? It's not an immediate return on your investment, right? So what I'll say is, again, it's an investment. Let me, let me give you an example. If you can barely pay your rent, right? And you could barely buy food and you know, you're just kind of getting by living paycheck to paycheck, you got a little extra money, but not a lot. Are you going to go invest? Are you gonna go buy real estate? Are you gonna go buy stocks? Are you gonna go invest in things that are gonna increase in value, right? If you could barely take care of your day to day needs, chances are you're not. Unless you're a super disciplined investor and you're like, hey, I'm, you know, investing first and then taking care of my bills second. Chances are you're not gonna be doing that. So it's the same thing with your moving company, unless you have the money or the time, which they're really the same thing, to invest in SEO without seeing results over the long term.
Then you shouldn't do it, right? Simple. But as soon as you have that extra money to invest, right? So let's say you know, a good SEO firm is going to charge you a few thousand dollars a month to manage a campaign, right? To handle everything that goes into SEO, from the backlinks to the copywriting to the blogs, to making sure everything's formatted the way that it needs to be and staying on top of it to help you rise in the ranks. It's going to cost you a few thousand dollars a month. Well, if you don't have that to put away, right, as an investment that you're not going to see until the future, you can't do SEO right away. Even though it's a great, great, great investment for the long term of your business. Because once it starts producing results, once you start rising up and you start seeing yourself rank on that first page, let's say.
You getting leads from those, you know, from that being there, like once you're there, right, it's, it's a matter of maintenance, of staying there. But it's going to cost you, you know, whatever, you know, figure whatever an SEO company is, is quoting you from management, right? Or whatever your time is worth to sit there and do it all yourself. You got to look at like six to eight to nine months before you start seeing any results, right? And that's not get recouping all your money right away either. That's just starting to see results. And remember, you've laid out money all this time. So.
If you're not in that position, right, which I know a lot of companies aren't, and so you're established, then you need to spend the money on pay per click because you're going to get that instant return, right? You're going to be able to put that money up, alright, run those ads and see that return right away. Now just because you can do a paper like you could go online right now, go Google, how do I set up a pay per click ad? And believe me, there's the tutorials there to show you how to do it. Because Google wants your money, right? They're gonna tell you how to set it up. However, there's a lot that goes into it. I mean it's a very, very detailed thing from, you know, it really starts with your, you know, with your ad really with the keywords and the target market. That you're going for. Then it's your actual ad that they see. Then your landing page. So getting the click, you're paying for it. Once you get the click, you pay for it. Just because they land on your page doesn't mean that's going to convert into a lead. Remember, you want all your marketing to build trust and capture leads, meaning builds trust by wow, they land on this page and they're like, this is a company that, you know, I could see myself doing business with them just based on what I see. That gives me a good feeling. And then capture leads based on your calls to action with your phone numbers and your web forms. Okay? A poor designed landing page will cost you a fortune because you're getting people that are bouncing off the site, they're landing there that would you pay for it, but you're not converting it into a lead. Okay, so now you convert it into a lead then, right? So you get them, look at your ad, right First, Then you get them to click on the ad. Now they land on your page. Just because they landed on the page doesn't mean it turns into a lead. But let's say now it turns into a lead. They pick up the phone, they call your company or they submit a request for a quote. Okay.
Keep saying long. Yeah, long term. You know, sometimes you'll, I'm reading some comments here. Sometimes you'll have.
You know, short term, you know, with pay per click, you'll have short term. With SEO, it's a long term turnaround, right. If things are being done the right way with white hat tactics, meaning, you know, things that Google approves of that they won't later penalize you for. Okay, so now you get them to land on your site, they convert, they pick up the phone, they call you, or they request a quote on your through your web form. But now you've got to turn that into a booked move. Right? Just because you got the lead doesn't mean you're going to book that lead. So, you know, for me, that's why in moving sales academy, the first thing that we teach, if you come to the live seminar, by the way, it's March 15th through the 17th. Just go to movingseminar.com for all the information. But the first day we start with your sales process, right? How to build a rock solid sales machine so that once you start putting leads into that sales machine, they're not going to waste. Right? We do marketing on day three and day two is all about operations, running your business like an SEO. How to work on your business instead of in your business, how to step away and, you know, run it through reports and things like that. But we start with sales because we. Without a strong sales process, you could generate all kinds of leads, right? Everybody will say, Louis, where are the best lead sources? Where the best lead sources. You can get all the leads in the world. And then you'll say, lou, they don't work. They don't work. Is it that the leads don't work or is it that the sales process is broken? So here's what I could tell you specifically when it comes to pay per click is.
It'S not going to be cost effective if you have a broken sales process. And I don't even mean to say broken, right? But not a strong sales process. Right. The companies that say, you know, Louis, I tried pay per click and I stopped. Right? It's because the strategy was wrong. Simple as that, right? Whether it was the ad strategy, whether it was the landing page and then the sales process. So let's just kind of recap here.
SEO versus pay per click, okay? We're only talking about these two forms of marketing. Ideally you'd be doing both, right? The major players in any, any city are doing both right? There have other things going on. They've got the direct mail, they're buying leads, they've got referral programs, they've got all kinds of other stuff going on. However, when someone is looking for a mover in this modern day of marketing, they're going and doing a search online. Okay? So you want to be there, but you need to be there in a way that's profitable, right? So again, the SEO. Great, great, great. Long term investment. If you have money to invest. If you don't have money to invest, start with pay per click. Optimize the campaign. Alright? If you want to learn how to do this, come to Moving Sales Academy Live. I've got Brian Bloom. You don't have to sit there and tweak all the keywords and write all the blogs and do all. You don't have to do that. But my recommendation is that you learn about it so that no one can take advantage of you, right? You don't want someone that's going to come in and charge you money, not do what they're supposed to do, and you, you're just gonna sit there in the dark. Listen, I was there, right? I went for those of you that are joining us, the first time I did SEO, I spent $30,000 upfront. I said, here, I need SEO. I don't know what this is. I don't know what this is about, but I need it.
