What to Focus on After Moving Season
Louis Massaro (Moving Mastery Podcast) advises moving company owners how to use the off season productively. He frames the off season as an opportunity to recalibrate and gives five explicit questions to guide action: (1) what unfinished to-dos remain, (2) what ideas can generate more business, (3) where to reduce expenses, (4) which business areas need tightening (sales, operations, accounting), and (5) how to improve personal physical health. He recommends selecting 2–3 high-impact projects, scheduling them, and executing them during the slow period. Episode ends with a promotional CTA for his free on-demand training "Six Stages of a Moving Company Sales machine" (lewismassaro.com).
Foreign.
It's Louis Massaro. And welcome to another episode of the Moving Mastery Podcast.
As we start to come out of moving season and into the off season, it's really important that you head into it with an intention on what you plan to accomplish in the off season. You know, to me, the off season is the perfect time to really just kind of, you know, recalibrate and get everything together and figure out what it is you're going to do for the following year, what processes you need to improve, what things you need to implement, and you need to think about that ahead of time so that you don't waste any time going into the off season, because it's a very valuable, valuable time if you use it correctly. All right? The last thing you want to do is just complain about how slow it is. I mean, you have to accept the fact that in the moving business, going to be a little dip off after moving season. Just accept it. Don't fight it. Don't resist it. Go with it. Use it as an opportunity to help you grow. All right, so I want to give you five questions to ask yourself to help you figure out what you need to do in the off season to get to that next level. All right, first thing is very simple. What's on my to do list that I haven't gotten around to? All right, I'm sure there's things that you've been meaning to do, you've been meaning to get to, and you've just been so busy. Well, now's the time to sit down, figure out what the priorities are, and start putting them on the calendar and getting them done. Second question. What ideas do I have to generate more business? I'm sure as we sit here and talk about this right now, you know, some things that you've thought of or you've had written down and you've been planning on doing that could help generate more business. What are those? Right. If you need some more ideas, sit down, think it through. I'm sure that you have some great ideas. You just need the time to implement them. And the off season is that time.
Next one is, where can I reduce expenses and cut costs every single year after moving season, I would sit down, look at my numbers, look at my expenses, and figure out where I could cut costs, where I could save some money, where I could tighten up and be lean and mean and profitable. Right. I'm sure there's some excess expense that, you know, you could probably trim, Even if it's $50 a month here or a couple hundred dollars A month there. That stuff adds up. And if you do it every single year and you don't let it accumulate, it'll help keep you real.
What areas of my business need to be tightened up? You know what it is, right? I don't know. Could it be sales? Could it be operations? Could your accounting need some work? Whatever areas really need to be tightened up, now's the time to work on it, all right? Take advantage of this slower period and get the things done that need to get done. They're going to help get you to that next level.
Last one is really important. It's not about your business, but it is about your business. What can I do to improve my physical health? All right? You got to remember, as a business owner, you are your business. Your business is you. If you don't have the energy to really tackle these projects and get these things done, you're not going to be as effective, you're not going to be as efficient, and you're just not going to be as on top of it. I could tell you this from personal experience. I mean, when I first started my business, I was eating fast food, I was sleeping at the office. It was, like, wasn't working out, and I started making that a priority. Like, every single day, I made that a priority. And if you don't have the time now, as you come out of moving season, use that extra time that you have to start making your health a priority, all right? Because when you feel good, you're going to come in and you're going to demonstrate, you know, you're going to be a good leader for yourself, for your company, for everyone around, and you're just going to be more effective, all right? So use this as an opportunity to do that also. Here's what I would do. After you go through these five questions, pick two to three projects that you're going to work on this off season. That's it, right? Don't overwhelm yourself. Don't add 20 things that you want to get accomplished. Two or three major things that, if you accomplish them, will really help move the needle forward and help take your business to that next level. Create a plan and start working on them. Start chipping away, put it on the calendar and start getting it done, all right? This stuff is so important. It's the guys that take care of their business in the off season that prosper, right? The businesses that grow, it's because of the things they're doing in the off season, not just, you know, by handling all the moves that come in the summer but taking the time to implement new strategies, right? Do you need to put new sales processes in place? Do you need to put new operations process? You need to train your movers. Whatever you need to do that. You know that you could pick two or three things and if you do them, it's going to get you to that next level. Don't focus on how slow it is, focus on what work you're putting in to build your business. All right? Until next week, go out and profit in business, thrive in life. I'll see you later.
