You were making $5,000 a month, right. Six years later. Let me ask you, how many straight years have you made $100,000 or more for four years?
You know, I knew that since others had done it that I could do it, too. Now it's like, now it's like the whole world is opening up. You can do it. You can do it. You can do.
Another episode of where are they Now? Here with notary public loan signing agent Moore in the great state of Indiana. How are you doing, Laura?
I'm doing great. Thanks, Mark.
You're welcome. Okay. People may not know we did this interview. You were making $5,000 a month, right. Six years later. Let me ask you, how many straight years have you made a hundred thousand dollars or more?
Fourth. Four year.
Four. So for the past four years, you've made six figures or more and you went from making four to $5,000 a month. So let's talk about that journey today when I like repeat back to you that you have had four consecutive years as a business owner, as an entrepreneur of $100,000. Like, what does that make you feel? What does that make you think? What thoughts come through your mind?
Well, it's absolutely amazing. It's amazing that you can come from corporate America and build a business that is fun, inspiring. It helps people and you help yourself, you help your family, and it's just. It's. It's just a great business. It's a great business to be in. It's a great business that can do amazing things, and it's just. It's wonderful.
So let's just fill people in who have not seen your original episode. Six years ago, you came from aviation and you were looking to make a change. Talk a little bit quickly about why you wanted to make that change. And obviously you're very glad you did.
Yes, I am very glad I did. I love. I love aviation. That's always going to be in me, but I was in it for 22 years, and the last company that I worked with was just a real toxic environment. And I was just ready to make a change. I was looking for something brand new, something that I had never done before. And that's when I saw you at the loan signing course.
I'm so proud of you, LJ Some people may know her as the ambassador of the Indiana group, but take us back from four years, right? While you're building this business pre Covid, what kept you engaged? What kept you just keep moving forward in a time period where interest rates weren't where they were During COVID well.
First of all, I was so excited to be starting something new. And when I first started, I made this pact with myself that I never wanted to stop traveling. So I started in 2018, January 2018. And in March of 2018, I scheduled a trip to China for that November. And so I had to make some money. I had to make money. Number one, I had quit my full time job already. I started a new business and I scheduled a trip to China. So I had some big bills that I needed to, to, to get together. So I was motivated to build my business and to make sure I could pay for that China trip.
You're making $4,000 a month. So why didn't you see 3, 4, $5,000 a month as a failure when you saw some of your other fellow community members making 8, 7, $10,000 a month? So what kept you inspired and what were, what, why were you able to kind of keep the blinders on and just focus on your business?
Because I knew it was possible because I did see, see others doing it. So I didn't see it as a failure. I saw it as I'm brand new. I'm brand new and I'm not doing what I can do. I'm doing what is possible now, but in the future I'm going to be able to do a lot more. And so I knew that since others had done it, that I could do it too.
Well, that's the mindset of a successful person. A successful person doesn't see somebody else and who's more successful and get jealous. You said you're new at this. What I heard was someone who understood that, you know, time is our best asset. Right. The more we do something better, we're going to become at it. And a lot of times too many new students don't allow the time.
It's about building and it's one relationship at a time. And you know, give yourself some grace to actually build that business because it does take time and it takes, it takes effort. It takes a lot of effort. Yeah, just give ourselves some grace. And to be able to take the time to build ourselves, we need to build ourselves and build that business and.
And build all those relationships one relationship at a time. One at a time. If you're really in this to build authentic relationships, it might take you two years to build four or five authentic relationships. But you saw it as one relationship at a time. Oh my God, that's so good. This is why I do these. You know, where are they now? Because I think what happens is people try to build four or five relationships at the same time, and there's no way you can build an authentic relationship like that. You can't. If you pick one relationship at a time and realize that those are going to compound over time, you'll have four straight years of making $100,000 or more. Why didn't you panic when rates went from three to six? Why didn't you say, oh, no, poor me, there's no business for me. I'm going back to aviation. Talk to me. Like, when rates spiked, what was the mindset of Laura? What made you buckle down and just get back into the fundamentals?
Well, actually, during that time, aviation did come calling. Someone actually called me and said, hey, we have a position if you'd be interested. And I said, no, I'm having a great time building my business. And I declined. But one of the reasons is that I believed in you, and you told me that what was going to happen, you let all of the community know, yet this is temporary. The people that really buckle down and continue with their business, they're going to be successful because there's going to be people that lake out. And I believe in you.
I. There's so many things I want to unpack in that statement. The first thing I want to unpack is the fact that, like, you understood that, you know, successful people have coaches and mentors, and no matter where you were, you still. I'm still your mentor. I'm still your coach. And I think a lot of times people walk away from those coaches and mentors versus trusting the process. And you trusted the process, you trusted your coach. And I think a lot of people kind of walk away. They get a certain level of success and they feel like, oh, I don't need a mentor anymore. I don't need a coach. I know everything. And so I want to commend you on your constant growth mindset, because that's why you are still where you are. What I also want to unpack is, like, you trusted your ability. Interest rates weren't going to dictate how much business you were going to get. Your effort was going to dictate how much business you were going to get. What do you. Is there anything you want to say around that topic?
It's really a matter of knowing, just knowing that you can. That you can do what you did before. Even if you started in the pandemic, you still built relationships.
You have a true confidence in your abilities, and you don't waver from that. And I hope people are inspired by this, because you just knew that, like, if I can do it once, I can do it again. Like, if I could walk into a title company one time, I could walk into a title company 10 times. And it's just real belief that you just trusted your, your, your training, you trusted your skills, you trusted your intuition. And I think a lot of people don't trust those. I'm really talking to someone as a true, just belief in what they're capable of. And by the way, I think that's a byproduct of building a business. What have been some speaking of byproducts, you know, to inspire, maybe some new notary public loan signing agents watching what have been some unforeseen byproducts of being your own boss, owning your own business. Because I try to tell students, like too many times people judge the return on investment on money. When I tell people it's not about the money you make, it's about who you become on the journey. How empowering is that for you?
It's very empowering because I probably. Well, and you know, it's. It's fun. It's fun getting to know, getting to know other people. And now it's like, now it's like a whole world is opening up.
Such a good way of saying. Because really is when you can walk into a Starbucks and just have a conversation with the person in front of you or the person behind you for no other reason than just having a conversation, like you said, it becomes fun. It becomes like the world open up. And, and that's what I hope more people hear. It's like, you know, yes, you've made a ton of money, but it really isn't the money that is really the beautiful part about your journey. It's. You've almost become a whole new person. And I hope people see, like, that's what this business does. It's not just the money. It's like you said, it's the personal growth. I mean, you're a female entrepreneur and you're, you know, you're traveling when you want to travel, all the things everybody aspires to be, and you did it through hard work. So let's kind of go to the past two years, right? In the past two years, we're in 2024 right now. 2022, interest rates spiked. I mean, in 2023, interest rates literally touched 8%, right? You've still made six figures in, in an 8% interest rate environment. What do you attribute that to?
Effort. Total effort. I just continued to do the Things that I was doing before. And I don't. I try not to complicate things. And, you know, I might change my marketing style a little bit or I might do a different type of marketing, but it's really all the same effort. Not like I'm going out and doing something phenomenal. I'm just going out and doing the work.
So when you say I keep it simple, I don't overcomplicate. Can you share some examples of A, how you keep it simple or B, and B, how some notary public loan signing agents may complicate it, may overthink it, like, talk through it. Because I'm sure this is me. Really helpful for someone watching.
You know, how do I go in there? What do I say? What do I do? And it's like, just do what comes naturally. Speak to the person, get to know them. It's not rocket science. It really isn't. If you go in, if you mess up, it doesn't matter. They'll forget it because they're too busy to remember that kind of stuff. But just go in and talk to people. Just talk to the one on one. Just one on one, like a person. Because they are just like you. They are just like me. It's only hard because you're focusing on yourself instead of focusing on them. What you need to do is focus on the person that's in front of you and not. Don't get in your head so much. Oh, I'm scared to go in. I'm scared to talk to the person. Don't complicate it. Don't overcomplicate it.
So good. So good. I mean, let's unpack that. It's not about scripts. It's about just connecting with another human being. It's about trying to get to know them. The over complication comes when you're trying to have the perfect pitch, right? It's really. You make it about them. And I, and I agree with you. I think people get nervous because they're focused on trying to manipulate someone into doing business with them versus just trying to be a real human. And I think that's a beautiful example of overcomplicating it. Lj, you are dropping Fire Girl.
And you know what? And I used to scripts at the very beginning. I use it at the beginning because I did not have the. I didn't have my own words to say. So I use the scripts and use them until you don't need them and then get rid of them and. And just talk to people like. Like, we're sitting here talking and what.
I love your vulnerability too. I hope everybody heard that as she used the scripts until she didn't need them. Like she still needed a crutch. And that's okay to say, but what's not okay is not to use the crutch, not to use the tools, not to. In your point, don't overcomplicate it. Like part of the simplicity is like Mark told you what to say exactly to your point. Which I think is a great piece of advice and a great like just only someone who can has been there can say it. And that's why we having this conversation. You know, one of my favorite quotes is and I might slaughter this is if you want to know about the road, the road ahead, ask the person walking back, right? And so that you're walking back on that path, you're like, look, keep it simple. If you don't know what to say, just say the scripts in the course. And even more simple is just make a connection other human being like such a good conversation. Let me ask you another question, LJ because I think you are inspiring for so many reasons. Success to you is traveling. Success to you is having time with your husband. Success to you looks different than success to somebody else.
Right?
So how have you been able to just stay in the Laura Jones lane? Right. We have some students, as you know, who make seven figures a year. How do you stay grounded? To cheer on the Molinas, to cheer on the Irene's, but really stay very proud of your own journey and very present in what you're trying to build. What has been your secret or your mindset to just keep you focused and on your journey.
I am proud of what I've done. I mean, I've never done anything like this in my life. And I'm proud of where I came from. I enjoy what I'm doing. Enjoy the journey. It's about the journey. You know what? I'm going to get there someday, Calvin. I'm going to get there. Molina I'm so proud of them. They are doing amazing, amazing things. But I know at one point I will get there.
The first four sentences out of your mouth was, I'm proud of where I am. I've never been here before. I'm proud of what I've built. I'm proud of what I'm building. Like, I almost want to cry because it's like not enough people say that. The first words out of most people's mouth is, I'm not. That versus being. That's right. Versus being. Present. And I. And I heard a human who is very present with their journey. And if I trust my strategies and I trust my systems, I will get wherever I'm headed. But I'm not going to veer by not being appreciative of where I currently am. And so that was. Honestly, I almost started tearing up. I think it was beautiful. Because not enough people, Laura and I hope whoever's watching right now, you can say, I'm proud of myself just like Laura did, I think three times straight. I'm proud of where I am. I'm proud of the business I built. I'm proud of what I where I am right now. And not enough people say, I am proud. Dot, dot, dot. If you can go back and whisper in her ear, what would you tell the younger notary public loan signing agent?
Laura I would tell that version of me to get out of my own way and don't listen to the naysayers because there are so many people that want to burst your bubble. And, you know, I had a couple of people that I really respected kind of burst my bubble at one point, and I kind of had to move through that. Anybody that tries to burst your bubble, get them out of your life because they're not doing you any service. And you know, that that is, that's what I would tell the. The younger version of me.
Anybody who's more successful than you will never give you a bad time. It's always the people who are below you that will give you the bad time. So I have never met someone more successful than me. That is, that is nothing but encouraging and nothing but supportive. And so when you have the naysayers, it's usually from people who are not where you want to. If you really look at the source or whoever's saying it, it might help you do. What you just said is cut them out of your life sooner. And I love that you. You say that. Give me. If you could touch on something you said in the beginning of that sentence and that said I've get out of my own way. What are some examples of you getting here in your own way that you would tell share with somebody so maybe they don't do the same thing. So what get out of your own way. What does that mean? And what did that mean for you six years ago?
I think it was back in 2019 when you rolled out the signing service course or section or whatever you want to call it. I want to open my signing service. And I had some people that were discouraging. It was kind of Hurt my feelings because toward not what I was expecting from this person. So I was expecting more support.
Thank you for sharing and being vulnerable because, you know, it's, we're all human in this process. And I think sometimes people look at six figure notary public loan signing agents and signing service owners like yourself, lj, that they must be superhuman. And the truth is we're not. The truth is we're all affected by different people's words and actions and we all kind of can look at life with the rear view mirror because life isn't perfect and our journeys aren't perfect. So thank you for sharing that. Like, you know, like listening to others discouraged you from doing. And that's why you would tell younger notary public loan signing agent Laura, don't listen to other people. Forge your own path. And now she started her own signing service. When I believe you're supposed to be.
If you start hearing negativity, oh man, run the other way. Because it. Run after your goals, run after your goals. Run after.
Run after your goals. Don't walk. And I hear a notary public loan signing agent who regrets they didn't run. And that's what makes that statement powerful and more palpable. It's like, look, I wish I would have sprinted, ran quicker. And again, you're being so vulnerable in this and thank you. And that's why I do the way are they now so we can kind of hear about their journeys. You know, let me kind of wrap up this and what an incredible conversation with you today, lj. If there's somebody out there who is kind of stuck in their journey, stuck where they're at, what would you say to inspire them to keep going and build what you've built, Right? When what you've built is a successful business around your lifestyle, a successful business, the way you want to build, not the way everyone else is, not by comparing it to anyone else's journey, but the way, lj. And by the way, I mean, lj, when you come into any room, you light it up. You come into any room and you have a smile. You come in any room and you feel your presence. And that's not what I felt six years ago. And so this growth of you as a human has been as incredible to watch as your fiscal journey of starting your own signing service. So if you can inspire somebody who's kind of stuck, right, Listen to the naysayers, right? Just kind of in there, what would you want to sell them, to share them, to reach their goals, reach their dreams and, and to be the next Laura Jones wherever they live, Just continue.
To take the steps and you take one step at a time. You know, if you need somebody to hold your hand, give me a call. You know, I'll talk you into doing anything, just, you know, whatever it is you really want to do, but you're having a hard time, call me. I'd be glad to talk to you and help you because I been through those struggles and I can help. I can help. And you can do it. You can do it. You can do anything, Anything.
Like you embody the loan signing system way you embody that our culture. The fact that you just said that, you know, I will help anybody and then that's what makes you special. That's what makes you an ambassador of our program. And so I just want to say it's such an honor to be on this journey with you. I'm going to start crying. I'm so thankful to, you know, meet another like minded, like hearted person. And so just thank you for what you do for the community. I mean, thank you for what you just shared. We all can make it to the top. And by the way, the top isn't money. The top is whatever you think the top is. And so we can all make it to our versions of the top. Let me give a quick shout out to your signing service you just launched. What's the name of it?
It's Naptown Notaries.
Naptown Notaries. And of course she looks for loan signing system, certified signing agents. Of course she does, first and foremost. But lj, I mean, girl, I don't know where you're gonna be in six years. All I know is I hope I'm there to witness it. Thank you for this conversation. Thank you for inspiring people. And don't stop. And let's go, Sam.
