How to Knock No Soliciting Neighborhoods (Door-to-Door Sales Tips)

A pest-control sales trainer demonstrates how to knock on doors in no-soliciting neighborhoods. The pitch costs $199 for the first treatment, then $79 monthly. Key tactics include name-dropping neighbors, posting on Facebook, staying calm when homeowners object, and using humor to keep things light.

I say no soliciting, but I open up the door.
You're so nice, thanks. Okay, so guys, this is how to knock doors in a no soliciting neighborhood. First of all, you have to realize that 90% of neighborhoods have a no soliciting sign in front of the gate. Now, if you let this hold you back, you will not sell, and it will get in your head. You need to realize that They're literally just posted in front of a neighborhood. They don't mean a whole lot. If a homeowner starts yelling at you and says, "This is a no soliciting house," then hey, you just be like, "Hey, God bless, have a good day." So when someone freaks out at you, you need to remember, one, not to lose your temper. If you do, then it will ruin your day completely and you're not gonna sell. You cannot let other people dictate your emotions. Imagine if you felt like that was your responsibility, to take on the emotions of all 200 people that you talk to every day. Don't let somebody else dictate how you feel. That's kind of step 1. Step number 2, if they have a sign on the door, you can still knock it. A lot of times people will leave these signs on their doors when they sell their home and they just forget that they're there. A lot of people have thanked me. Thank you for coming by. I had the no soliciting sign, but I'm happy you knocked on my door. Last but not least, when you guys are knocking in no soliciting like neighborhoods, I would just encourage you guys to do a lot of name dropping. So when you knock on the door, you literally say, "Yeah, I just signed up your neighbor Sally right down the road. Here's a selfie of her and I. She was dealing with the ants." That way instantly, right off the rip, they know exactly who you are. They know that you're a credible source. And then be sure to get your face on the Facebook page with a picture of you and the customer, with the customer telling about, you know, what you're doing for the neighborhood. If you do these 3 things, right? Number 1, don't get in your head and don't let people dictate your emotions. Number 2, don't not hit non-soliciting signs. And number 3, get in the neighborhood Facebook page and do a lot of bandwagon stuff. You will sell lights out in any neighborhood this summer. Almost fell off my Segway again. Helen, we're both in sales. Let me tell you why I suck as a salesman. Hey you, if you're listening to this right now, it means you want to get better at selling. I just finished up with my workout this morning, and high athletes, they train every day, just like high-level salesmen. So this training that I did with this company is all gonna be on my course, where if you just pay $100 a month, you'll be able to have access to everything that I said, all of the sauce. So yeah, there's a little bit of free stuff here, and if you've liked the free stuff, you're going to freaking love the stuff that's on the course. I hold nothing back on the course. Other cool thing, if you wanna be coached 5 times a week, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, DM me about my roleplay group, DM me the word roleplay, and I'll send you a link to join my group where I train you an hour a day at 9:00 AM Mountain Standard Time. We do some game film, I do some coaching, and then we also do some roleplay groups where you go into breakout rooms and train with other kids. So guys, let's get back to the video. Enjoy the free stuff, but know there's a lot of other stuff you're leaving on the table. If you don't end up joining my course. I'll see you on the course. Let's go.
Ants are going to be coming. They're not just here right now, so you know how it goes.
You'll like that I came by today. Your name is Angela? Angela.
And we have the red wasp, not in the front, in the back.
Okay.
They actually come through our house.
Uh, Angela, really?
Yeah, like my granddaughter was playing and the wasp—
you look way too young to be having grandkids. I'm not playing. Uh, and I wouldn't just say that. You know you're trying to get I am trying to get a sale for sure. No, but, but, but I'm not trying to BS you, but legit. At this current moment, do you have that set up yet or still not yet? I'm assuming not yet.
We fired a few of ours.
I just set up, I just set up a lady earlier today that had a guy. They kind of dropped the ball because they suck.
We see them through our cameras.
I don't like that at all.
Is this a new company?
Yep. So we just started actually. I'm glad that you brought that up. When you're a small company, getting 79 reviews is actually pretty difficult to do.
How long ago was that posted, the review?
Um, this was posted a month ago.
How long you been in business?
We just started this year out here.
Okay.
Yeah, so it's been pretty fun.
It's not like me.
I—
if I see—
you hate bugs.
I'm not saying I hate bugs.
Yeah, but you definitely, you definitely care more than hubby.
Well, I don't like the fleas and the roaches.
Yeah.
And the red wasps.
Okay, so that's what I'll cover for you basically. So I'm gonna dust around the windows and the— and the— and the eaves. My company. My apologies.
I—
salesman, right?
Well, say everything that I—
my technician.
And them technicians are not going to say everything that you say.
They'll do it. Okay, my technician.
My apologies.
I take ownership. I take ownership over what I do. You know what my company does.
We went in and out with these. I know.
We'll take good care of you. Okay, I'm— my technician, not me.
Okay.
My technician is going to take a brush pole, brush all that down.
Are they learning? Are they learning?
Yes, they are. That's why they follow me. Okay. But they'll take—
I've been in sales and recruiting.
What do you sell?
Not anymore. I used to sell cars.
Oh, cool.
But no, I do. I'm contracted with the VA now.
You ever heard of Andy Elliott? Car salesman?
No, I haven't sold cars in a long time, but I used to recruit.
Well, I'm not going to—
I'm going to—
No, I'm just saying.
So I want to hear all of your pitches. Yeah, yeah. You know how it goes. And what's a good number for you?
Oh no, man, hold on.
Love it.
You see, for that— oh, why am I gonna pay $199 if I do it today? If I say, yeah, let's go ahead and do it, I'm gonna do $199. So next month you're gonna hit me with $79?
Yeah.
Why?
So the way it works, I already paid you for 3 months. Yeah, yeah. So basically, look at it like this. You're basically— the $199 covers the first treatment, and then you're basically prepaying for the treatments. That makes sense. It's I look at it as like a monthly payment for like a guarantee, but like the first payment, the reason why it's— okay, does that make sense?
Let's just say you weren't doing all of this and I happen to Google you and I find you and I call you and say, you know what, can you do a one-time service for me? It's gonna be $500.
Yeah, just because it's— I don't really don't want to put my name on a service that's like a one and done. You know why, right? Because the bugs have egg cycles, and if I put my name on a one-time service, then you're going to be like, oh, this guy's don't work.
We'll talk in our neighborhood app.
Okay, cool.
Very informative.
I like that.
Has anybody in this neighborhood signed up yet?
Nope, not yet. You'll be one of my first.
Why?
I just started with these kids in this neighborhood.
In this street?
Or— I've been on this street. We started here about 4. What time we start here? About 3:30, 4 o'clock? Yeah, because I'm training these guys. So I was with another group of 3, then I go to another group of 3. So I'm like the guy that shows them the ropes.
So you've been here since 4 and nobody signed up?
You know how it goes. Door-to-door is not an easy job. That's why they hired me to train them. You know what I mean?
I say no soliciting, but I open up the door.
You're so nice. Thanks. And then it's $79 a month. Exactly.
And you only come out every 3 months. Every 3 months.
Exactly.
Because instead, look at what if we say, damn, man, the ants are getting bad.
You call me, I come back for free. Absolutely free.
Yes.
Well, it's $79 a month. That's what you pay for. If I end up coming out here 15 times a year, number one, I'm not doing a good job. But number 2, it's part of your agreement with me. Does that make sense?
I'm going to have to talk to my husband. I'm not fixing to—
you can put my number down. Is he here right now?
No, he's not. When you see the Chevy Silverado pull up, that would be him.
If I'm not still here training these guys, it might be another one of my trainees coming back. Is that all right with you?
And y'all remember, y'all hear how I am, right? And y'all going to have to talk to me. We are looking for somebody, or if not, my husband tries his best to treat—
What do you want? It's not that simple. What do you want? But we can chill here and you can call him and then you can literally open the door and be like, hey, we're good. Hey, we're not. Where do you think you're at? A 1 is like absolutely not. A 10 is like me. High.
In the middle. I'm in the middle.
Probably 5, 6. Or what about 6, 7?
No, don't say that.
Okay, cool. You call your husband. That was a very, very like— it was like you can feel a lot of contention, right? Like, but it's okay. Like, you have to match it. Was I like super bubbly the whole time? But I also don't take her totally seriously. That's why I was like, "6-7," and she's like, "Yeah, go call." And I literally was like, "Yeah, go call your husband." That was a tango. Tango is like a very aggressive dance where you go back and forth on each other. So that's what I like about sales is that no matter what happens from the sales process, um, I got her name wrong and then she forgot my name and I'm like, "You lost me now." So you dish it right back to her. Other observations that you guys saw about that or no? The observation was that you had to adjust on the fly once she kind of just went like flat out open, like how I did sales and this and sales, and started like picking on certain things. Like the conventional route seemed like kind of went backwards, just like more of like level, like level with me kind of a conversation.
Yeah, she tried to question anything you said. Whenever she tried to throw you off on purpose, you just simply calmly just re-looped and then you just re-looped.
I also like when, uh, when, you know, after she was like, yo, When you drop the price down and you were saying like, oh, $79. Oh, she's like, oh yeah, so you can do a price drop. I'm like, no, I can't. Like, you have to earn this. You have to, um, you have to leave a review.
You kept telling her like, yo, you can't just do this for free, right? You gotta—
yeah, the only reason I can do it is because I have slots tomorrow that I need to fill up, and if they do not fill up, then I can't do the discount. So then you— there's actually a legitimacy to the price drop. Like, they have to understand that if they don't do the price, if they don't do it now, they don't get the discount. What's up? It's a no-go? All right, hey, well, we tried, right? Have a good day, guys. I want somebody to come up and try to do a role play and just implement one or two of the one-liners that I just said. Uh, honey, get the dogs. Oh, what's up?
Hey, what's up, sir? Super quick, Mark and Annette. I'm just handing their bug—
I got the dog back here. Come on, come here, come here, come here.
Let me show you something. Do you see all these wasps over here?
Oh, all right. What, what's up?
All these mud daubers right now. Mark and Annette, I'm at their house taking care of them.
Oh yeah, yeah, pest control. Yeah, I do that myself, man. I'm watching the Georgia football game right now. You got a card or something?
Sweet.
Who's actually winning right Georgia.
Good deal. Hey, super quick, what do you do for work?
So wait for that. So start with some questions first. Georgia playing football right now, man. I gotta go.
I'll be super quick. So you do it yourself. What are you dealing with the most when you're taking care of it?
Oh man, I spray everything, man. I spray all them roaches, spiders, and ants, man. You do it all? Oh hell yeah, I do. I got them. I got the good stuff. It's illegal.
I got almost a case of Durzban downstairs.
That's illegal. I know.
Well, you're obviously a busy guy. You got the Georgia game going. I don't want to take up too much of your time.
Yeah.
Super quick. You seem like a busy guy. What do you do for work?
Oh, well, shoot. You know when you go to Walmart? You know?
Yeah.
When they give you them stickers when you walk in? I'm the sticker manager.
That's a big deal. Y'all doing God's work.
Hell yeah.
Seem like a busy dude. I want to take this job off your hands. This pest control you're doing is way below your pay grade. Oh, just follow me real quick.
Come here. Okay, cool. Round of applause. Okay, good job. Okay, good job. Okay, do you see how you guys can have— I mean, obviously that was fun, but like, good job. Round of applause. That was good. Do you see how you're like not— you're just— you're catering the pitch like, dude, this DIY stuff, you know, like doing it yourself, way below your pay grade. Your time's way better spent doing the Lord's work, handing out them stickers at Walmart. All right, you ready? Hey, what you want? I'll be real quick. Do you know Mark and Annette? No, no, we good, man. Whatever you selling, we good. We ain't got no— we ain't want no roof, we ain't want no solar, we ain't know nothing. We good, brother, we good. I'll be real quick. Yeah, I'm just the bug guy, man. Brother, I gotta go. There's a football game on. LSU is playing. Oh dude, I gotta go.
I get it.
I'll be real quick. Quick, here. I've been doing it for, for that last 5 years. We're good.
See?
Okay, let me ask you, what do you do for work? Oh, actually, uh, I'm the water boy at Louisiana. You're a water boy? That's a big deal. Yeah, go Tigers! Your time is way more well spent doing your job, right? It's never fun taking care of the bugs, let's be real, right? I mean, it's kind of a hassle. You'd way rather be passing out water. Here, come on, let me show you. There you go. Cool, cool. You see how I'm like, okay, he's got to get moving now. He was starting to get too wordy there and I'm like, I was like, okay, let's get me moving into pitch now. So you see how you just use a little one-liner there? Be like, dude, you got better things to do with your time. Come check this out. Round of applause. Good job. Karens. What happens when they open the door?
Who are you?
Did you not see the sign? It says, can you not read? You know, Do you not know this is a no soliciting neighborhood? Okay, how do we respond to those people? Hi, miss, sorry to bug you. Not sure if you know James or Chris down the street, but did you not see my sign? I'm just a pest control guy. Would you like to sign up?
No.
Gotcha. Have a great day. Okay, God bless you. Yeah, get out. Get out of here. Get out. Have a great day.
Okay, miss.
Yo, get out. Okay, do you guys see how you can just like You'd be like, hey, God bless, have a good one, and you just turn your back and walk away. Okay, you said somebody else, someone up, come on. Okay, ready? But hey, the point is to just like smile, walk away, and say have a good day. End on a win. You— they should— nobody's life should ever feel be worse because of something you said. You guys ready? All right, you ready? All right, ready?
Hey, super quick, miss. I'm just working with Mark and Annette. I do their bugs, all the wasps and ants.
You're soliciting?
We're in trouble. I am. I am.
Did you not see the sign at the beginning of our neighborhood?
I did, super quick. I was just wondering, do you guys want the service? I see a lot of mosquitoes and wasps mess around here.
So you're doing too much here. I'm not sellable. Okay, can we try again? Did you not see the sign when you came into our neighborhood?
Yeah, super quick, do you have a water bottle?
We're just doing the pest control.
Did you guys want it?
No!
Alright, well God bless you. Have a good day.
There you go, good, round of applause. Alright, good. Hello?
Hey, how's it going?
Real quick, uh— No, no, no, no, no. No, I'm not doing this. Cool. Nope, we know.
No, you don't want it?
That's cool. Nope, get out. No soliciting. Have a good day, man. There you go. Good round of applause. Okay, one more, one more. Can I do like what I actually kind of do to see if it's too much? Maybe.
Come on up.
Uh, hello? Uh, yeah, I'm Steve with Kiwi Pest Control. Did you not see the sign? You know what, actually, I already knocked the doorbell after I seen I'm not here to sell you windows or solar. I'm just doing your neighbor's bugs. Do you want us to come and check your brain? No, no, I'm gonna call the police immediately.
Have a good night.
I'm calling the police. Have a good night. I'm calling. Love you. No, okay, I love you. Okay guys, so that's good. Round of applause for Steve, okay. Okay guys, the whole point of that is, guys, just make sure you end on W's. You can't think, you can't take things so serious. You can't take things personally. Will you guys eventually get the cops called on you at some point? Here we go. How's it going, brother? Yeah, dude, it's whatever. When a cop rolls up on you, you just go— this is where you go, oh, was it the crazy lady that called in earlier? And the cops will always bust up laughing. I feel super grateful to have been able to come in and visit you guys. Grateful that you guys trusted me to be able to pour into you guys. I'm really excited for you guys too. So let me know how I can help in the future if you guys ever have text messages. Like, voice memos I'm really good at. Text messages I hate because I don't actually get any content. But if you guys want to send a 30, 40-second message over, you have questions, let me know. If it gets out of hand, I'll let you know too. I never do anything I don't want to do. That's just a rule in life that I have. So if I don't want to respond to you, I'll tell you. But if you ever have questions, reach out to me and I would love to pour into you guys. Okay, thanks guys, appreciate you. Let's break down, let's break down. Cool, everybody get in here, put your hands up. Kiwi on me, Kiwi on 3. 1, 2, 3, Kiwi!
