Meet My Dad (Behind the Scenes Video)

Matthew AI and his father Jameson revive a "Boring Heroes" segment about a San Diego hotel waiter who's an ex-serviceman with four combat tours. The waiter drives an hour from Mexico each day and notices when guests make mistakes with their tea, replacing drinks without being asked. They argue small acts of pride deserve more attention than celebrity stories.

Hello and welcome to a brand new video. I have three reasons that I'm excited today. The first one is that I am speaking to you right now from my San Diego retreat. Five days of transformation. We've got this huge group of women coming through it with us. I'm having the best time of my life. The second reason I'm excited today, remember a little while back we spoke to my mum on a video and you guys loved it. You said such beautiful things. Well we thought we'd step it up a notch today, take it to the next level. Introducing... My Dad. Hi. But that's not it. I'm gonna talk about the third reason I'm really excited. We are bringing back today an old segment that we only did one episode of and people loved it. I still think today it's one of the most brilliant ideas I've ever had. So I'm excited to bring you today, Episode 2 of Boring Heroes. No, he's not the good guy. He ain't the boring hero. We have a different guy. So I took the opportunity to do this segment on boring heroes with my dad. But he hasn't heard who the boring hero is yet. So I'm gonna tell you and the people out there live, so to speak. So here's the boring hero. Mum was at breakfast this morning. in the hotel. And the waiter that we had yesterday, who wasn't even serving our table today, he looked to our table and was obviously paying attention and saw that Mum had a cup of tea and that she put cream in her tea. And I heard about this. You did hear about this?
I heard about what happened.
So the waiter sees her put cream in her English tea breakfast tea, which is just, I mean, that's weird, isn't it? No, you'd never do that. Yeah, that'd be disgusting. He comes over and he says, Madam, I couldn't help but notice. Bear in mind, he's not even our waiter. He goes, Madam, I couldn't help but notice that you just put cream in your tea. And yesterday you had skimmed milk in your tea. So let me take that away from you, and I'm going to replace the tea and get you some skimmed milk. She didn't know she'd put cream in it. He came over and told her and replaced her tea set with new tea and fresh milk. That, to me, the reason I chose this man as a boring hero. And by the way, please, like, I know there's gonna be comments saying, oh, it's so derogatory to call them boring heroes. It's just a funny line for the segment. It's a funny name. So relax. We don't see enough of people who really take pride in in their work on every level. That's what it said to me.
I'm gonna tell everybody a little bit more about that boring hero that you don't know.
Go on. 'Cause I'm listening.
I was left alone at the breakfast table this morning after everybody left. And we'd actually said to him, you,'re a great server. You give great service. And that's really incredible. Thank you. And he shared a little bit of his story. with me. He's an ex serviceman. He served eight years and did four tours, two in Iraq and two in Afghanistan. And he was a medic on the medic team. As a result of his experiences, he was, I don't know, in England we would say pensioned out of the services. He's been signed off out of the services. And he isn't here, you always assume. Terrible thing is, when you see great service, you always assume that somebody's doing it for the gratuity. That the great service is just there, because they're there for the tip. And what's amazing about this boring hero is he said, I don't need the money. He said, I actually love working here and serving people. And I've come here by choice because it's a great place and I love to serve people and I love my job.
Really?
Yeah. He said, but I have financially, I have support from my pension because of having left the services as a result of disability.
Shall I tell you something you don't know about this boring hero?
Yeah.
So I found out yesterday that this is like a puzzle. We're discovering a human being.
It's being somebody's life here.
Did you know that he serves people in this hotel in San Diego, but he lives in Mexico?
Well, he said he comes here. I didn't realize he lives in Mexico.
He drives an hour from Mexico every day.
Oh, wow.
To serve in this hotel, to serve food, and then an hour back. So he has to go through border control every single day, twice a day. That's just incredible. To do it. This is what I want to get across to people. It doesn't matter what you do. Passionate people don't find things that they're passionate about. It's actually in a way more simple than that. They bring passion to everything that they do. I love when I see passion about and pride over what seemed like the smaller parts of a job or what seemed to other people like the trivial parts. because it doesn't go unnoticed. And that's the whole point of this segment. And I'm glad we're doing this, Jameson, number two. It's been too long. Shame on you for letting it drag on this long before we did another one. But what I like about it is that we are bringing attention to the small things in life that actually matter, the moments. Not the big stuff, not the crazy celebrity, or that extraordinary miracle thing that happens or that person who is a champion of a sport, the everyday things and people that actually matter. That's why I'm in love with this segment. So that's it. We did it. We nailed it. Boring hero.
I think we should go and tell him.
What shall we tell him?
He's a hero.
Okay. Should we send him this video?
Do you know what? He would love to see the video. Truly. I know. Because just his response to us compliment him in a real genuine way today. He loved that. and he'll love the video. And you know, he's got a sense of humor. He'll understand the boring hero too.
Thank you for watching guys. I'm excited. What a great privilege today. This little round of applause. Jameson, you applause as well. You're not above this.
