My #1 Tip for Getting Whatever You Want

Matthew AI shares a story about an older mentor who challenged his complacency and made him realize he'd lost his curiosity. The key to getting what you want is staying a perpetual beginner, willing to learn from people ahead of you instead of defending your ego.

Hi guys, so I'm on my retreat right now. We're in St. Petersburg. I am on day three of the program. I have Jameson with me, which is a real treat. We never really go out anywhere without each other now, do we? Make sure we always bring you. So I'm on the retreat. We have this incredible group of women here. Since it's day three, on day three we go out and we have drinks while we watch the sunset together, which is absolutely stunning. so that's where I'm on my way to right now. And I decided while I'm here, I have to make a blog video because it's my, I've set a standard for myself that I have to do a video for you every week. So I thought, okay, it's not convenient for me to do a video for you right now, but I'm gonna do one anyway. So this is my video from the retreat. I'm very excited. These are my ladies, by the way, how exciting is this? They're not my ladies, they're ladies that have come on the program. I want to talk right now about self-development because I think it's a subject that we do intrinsically on this blog, but we never talk about it directly. So I'm very excited to be able to talk to you about it directly for once. By the way, Jameson, check that out. Seriously. That, like, life could be worse, couldn't it? Think Jameson was in the slums. He was, you were nobody, were you? Look at where you are now. Look at that sunset. Jameson gets to see that now. You're welcome. So I want to talk today about the types of people that do self-development because we have, I think, a self-development culture that has grown and grown and grown. And there are kind of two camps. In fact, there are three camps. There's the type of person that goes on self-help seminars, they read books, and they never do anything as a result. So they keep reading, reading, reading, reading, reading, and they become what we call self-help junkies. and they're a nightmare because they're always reading every book, they're always going to every event, but they're never actually doing anything. The second type of person is the person who looks down on the types of people that read those self-help books, read self-development books, go to a seminar, go to a training program. They have an ego about this stuff. They think maybe they've even had a little bit of success. They've done a little well in something and they think they know everything. I've heard everything, I've done everything. So for them, it's like, well, what do I need to learn? Who am I gonna learn from someone like that? What am I gonna learn from a program like that? So they don't do it. Now, of course, the danger with that is you never actually grow. And those people talk shit about everyone else who goes and does a seminar, like, oh, why do you need that? They even try and stop their friends from doing it. But the truth is, if they actually went, they might learn something. But there's also a third type of person that is in this world right now, and that's the type of person that decides I'm motivated on some level. I want more, but I need training. I need to learn more. There's always something new to learn. Those are the people that when they're in a seminar, they're sitting there and they're scribbling like crazy, and they're already thinking about how that's going to apply to their life. They're already thinking about how am I going to use this technique? How am I going to use this concept? They're thinking about how it applies to them. They're never too proud to learn. Like, if I look around right now, I have all these women here right now. These are all different types of women. Amongst these women, we have people with PhDs. I have a woman who's got both a degree as an engineer and a lawyer. I have someone who's a facial surgeon. I have someone who's a world-class violinist. There is this myth about self-development that it's about, oh, people who are not successful trying to be successful. And it's complete nonsense. There is a certain type of person that wants to learn and grow. And they will be that type of person throughout their entire life. It doesn't matter what happens to them. I don't, the sun's down, I don't need these anymore. I've always been the type of person that no matter where I am in life, I know there's something more to learn. When I was 14 years old, I wanted to go on a Tony Robbins seminar. How crazy is that? I was 14 years old. I haven't changed since that point, except one moment. I'll tell you one moment where I changed. I think I was about 23-24 in my business and I'd started to get some success I started to make some money, which was an amazing concept to me because I never had any money. I met up with one of my original mentors, someone that I had met when I was about 19 years old, and he was far more successful than me. This was a guy in his late 30s, amazing businessman. So we went out for this drink, and he said to me, what have you been reading? What have you been learning lately? And I said, you know what? I haven't been reading much lately. And he said, why? And he had this look of shock in his eyes. I said, I haven't been reading much because I just, I feel like when I read other people's concepts, they get in my brain and then I can't write my own stuff. I can't be original. So, you know, I haven't been reading. I don't want to absorb other people's stuff. I want to create my own. I've never had a look of disappointment like this guy gave me in this moment. Most of the time, people don't break rapport with you. Most of the time, people are just nice to you. They say something nice, like, oh, I get it. I understand that. Yeah, you don't want to read too much because you don't want to pollute your thinking. A true mentor knows when to break rapport with you. And he was in front of me and he said, I gotta tell you, mate, I'm so disappointed in that. He said, that's really disappointing to hear. I never thought I'd hear that from you. And I said, and I was like taken aback. My ego kicked in. He said, you know, I've always known you as someone that wants to learn and wants to expand your mind and learn as many new concepts as possible, goes on training programs, and I'm disappointed to hear that. I went home and I thought about it and it really affected me because I realized, wow, In this short time of getting a little bit of success, I've developed this ego where I think that I'm too good to go and learn more. And it completely shifted my paradigm again. And I went out and I started absorbing like I was 14 years old again. The most successful people in the world know that there's always another level. Now that I'm here, I know that there's this place up here that I could get to because I suddenly realized what I'm worth and what I'm capable of. So now that I'm here, I've realized there's another level. how am I going to get to that other level? I gotta get better mentors, better training, I gotta keep learning myself, I gotta keep renewing my reasons, renewing my motivation, and getting the edge in as many different ways as possible. Whether it's how to get more external success or how to manage your emotional states better, how to manage your body better, how to manage all of the things you have got going on, how to juggle better, because we're always juggling in life trying to achieve balance, there's always somebody who can teach you something that you don't know right now. That's true of you, that's true of me. We all need to keep finding mentors, we all need to keep training, we all need to keep finding ways of sharpening the best tool we'll ever have, which is ourselves. With that, go out there, wherever you do it, who cares? If you do it with me, if you do it with someone else, you go read someone else's book, go take someone else's training program, it doesn't matter. But do something and never be too arrogant. to learn more about the world, about yourself, and about how to make more of it. Because we get this one lifetime, we've got to make the most of it. So go out there, do your thing, guys. Thank you for being with me. I'm glad you got a little glimpse of the retreat. I'm glad you're here with me. Hopefully at some point, I'll see you here. If you want to apply, we'll leave a little link at the end of this video. We'll give you an application form. You want to come and be part of this with these women? Jameson, give a little shot of all these women right here. These are the amazing women that we have right now. All right guys, so thank you so much for joining me here on the retreat.
