One Mindset For a Successful Life

Matthew AI argues that mindset is the decisive factor in success. He contrasts two waiters handling a customer's special request: one sees opportunity to excel and earn a tip, the other sees a nuisance. Hard work without the right mindset leaves you with the worst of both worlds.

I was thinking today about how slight changes in mindset essentially change our entire lives. Every ounce of our success and the opportunities we get can be determined by millimeter shifts in the difference in our mindset. I mean, it's the same in our love lives. It's the same in our work lives. To me, it defines how rich someone gets versus how poor they stay. It's the same thing. And very often when people come to me, they will say to me, I just don't get it. You know, I work hard and, you know, I've been doing this job for God knows how many years and I've just never really progressed. And I'm so frustrated, and I'm not where I should be. I'm not where I deserve to be. That happens in dating too. I'll go on a TV show and they'll say, here's Monica. She hasn't had a boyfriend in 10 years. And look at her. She's great and she's funny and she's just got a great way about her and she's got a great job and she's got a great lifestyle. And why hasn't she had a date in 10 years? And it'll always be the same. I'll watch her on a date. I'll see how she's acting and behaving and talking. And there'll be tiny differences in mindset and in the way that she behaves that stop a guy from taking her on a second date and a third date and then making it a relationship. One of the areas that I find this epitomized is in restaurants. I always find it interesting when someone gives a waiter or a waitress a complication in their order. They say, I'd love it if you could do this instead or do this on the side. Is that okay? There are two types of waiter in this situation. One of them gives a look of disdain. You know, that. That second where you ask for something, you catch them just for a split second give you a look like, really? They see it as an opportunity to be frustrated that you're a difficult customer. The other type of waiter looks at this as an opportunity to earn their tip. This is a unique opportunity because if you just order your meal, where's my opportunity to earn my tip? But you give me a challenge, all of a sudden. I get to be great for you. I get to show you what I'm made of. I get to distinguish myself from everyone else in this place. It's a tiny difference in mindset, but one that will produce dramatically different Results. For these two people, the difference is the second person, the one that saw this as an opportunity. They'll also have this mindset everywhere else in their life. So they'll see all these little places in life where there's an opportunity to distinguish themselves, to prove themselves, while the other person sees everything as an opportunity to complain. Where do you think these two people end up? One ends up with everything. The other one ends up that they've worked hard their whole life and nothing good has come to them. The hard thing to swallow is that the complainers, the ones that begrudgingly do things, they still end up working their asses off. So when they get to a point in their life and they look back and they say, I didn't get what I deserved. I worked hard my whole life, the difference was mindset. Because a slight shift in mindset could have given you completely different results. You still ended up working hard anyway. And that's the real shame. It's one thing to say, I never worked a day in my life and I never got what I deserve. You know, I never got what I deserved. You say you're an idiot, but for the person that truly does work hard, but their mindset is just a little bit off. And instead of seeing things as an opportunity or as a challenge to be overcome, they see it as a chance to complain. For those people, they'll end up getting the worst of all worlds while this person works hard and gets everything, gets every opportunity, gets every accolade, gets compliments, gets the treatment that they deserve because they treated life differently. So I want you to look at that in your own life. I'm always looking for it in mine. And whenever I catch myself complaining or being annoyed about a situation in life, instead of seeing it as a unique opportunity to prove myself to, I will stop myself in that moment and I'll do a little reframe and just look at it and say, how is this an opportunity? How is this a gift? How is this something I can use right now? And it always changes my focus and makes my day better. So hopefully it will for you, too. And I will see you in the next video.
