What He Said to Me Made My Day! How Would You Have Reacted?

Matthew Hussey shares a story about a pool attendant named Dalton who said "It shall be so" when taking drink orders. He's launching a series called Boring Heroes to celebrate small moments of genuine attention that make someone's day better.

A couple of weeks ago we introduced a new segment to this YouTube channel. It was called Sexy Potatoes. We take movies and we take the life lessons from those movies and distill them for you. We did Frozen, it was a massive hit. We're going to be doing more of those soon. But for today we wanted to do something a little different again. Where this idea stemmed from was that in my everyday life I would come across people who would just do these little things that would make my day better in some way, or just be a little different from the norm. They would either do something inspiring, something funny, something silly, or something just a little crazy that I thought broke the monotony of everyday life. We often reward people for the big things that they do. When they overcome the most ginormous adversity, when they take on an enormous challenge, or do something that seems superhuman. But I think some of the most interesting parts of life are the most human. They're the most relatable. It's when someone does something that's so small and seemingly insignificant, but should demand our attention because it's a beautiful, magical moment that breaks the norm. Now you may be wondering, who are these beacons of hope? These watchful warriors? These protectors in the shadows? Welcome my friends. to boring heroes. Today's boring hero is Dalton. Last week I was at my retreat and I always bring my mum to the retreats. Many of you saw the video with her recently that was shot at the retreat. Every day when I would come, when I would leave the seminar room to go and have my lunch, she would come up to me and she would talk about this guy around the pool who looked after her. She said he always finds my beds around the pool, he always makes sure I'm okay, he gets me drinks and he's such a lovely guy. And this guy who was serving drinks around the pool was someone I kept hearing about day after day but I never met. By day six, by day off, I finished on day five and all of a sudden on day six I found myself sunbathing around the pool. This beaming energy of a man walks past me at the pool and I instantly know that this is Dalton. Now he looks at me and he says, and by the way, forgive the accent because it's going to be horrible. He said, oh, hello, Mr. Hussie. How are you today? And I went, I'm really good. I could already feel my energy lifting up. He said, Is there anything I can get you? And I went, I'll take a pina colada. And he looked at me and he went, It shall be so. It shall be so. Who says that? It was amazing. He looked at my friend and he said, and what would you like? And he said, well, I'll take a strawberry daiquiri. And he said, It shall be so. Who says that? And here's what I was thinking. He's really gonna make this happen. Like, this is not, this is not, he's gonna go away and think about making us a drink. He's gonna go away and make us a drink. He's gonna go and make the shit out of that pina colada and that strawberry daiquiri, and he's gonna bring it back here, and it's gonna happen. It shall be so. And it felt so good to hear someone all of a sudden have the level of certainty where they knew that it was going to happen. Where they weren't going, oh let me try my best. Let me see what I can do. I'm going to find out for you. No, yeah, let me see. I'll do my best. I could do that. He said it shall be so. Isn't that level of certainty missing from 99.9% of people? Now, he may have said it over something as trivial as getting some drinks, but what I found is when someone says it about the little things, they tend to say it about the big things too. Dalton, I don't know what sort of person you are in your everyday life, but I liked who you were in that moment. I appreciated it. And to everyone else out there, this may be a boring moment. This may seem insignificant. It may seem like nothing, but it's not boring to me. That's why I want to reward this hero. That's why Dalton deserves special mention today. Thank you for being the most certain person in my day. Dalton, you are this week's Boring Hero.
