What Makes You Undervalued by Men... (Matthew Hussey, Get The Guy)

In this YouTube episode, Matthew Hussey joins three Miami‑based women—Natalie, Ollie Fowler, and Catherine—to discuss the unique challenges of dating in Miami. The conversation begins with observations about the city’s transient, appearance‑focused culture, where many people seek casual fun and status. Hussey introduces the concept of a "perceived challenge," arguing that when a person is too easily available, they are undervalued, and that true value comes from maintaining high personal standards rather than playing hard‑to‑get. The group explores how to communicate those standards in a playful yet clear way, sharing personal anecdotes (e.g., Natalie’s refusal of a house‑call first date and the shift to a group wine‑bar outing). Hussey emphasizes that confidence and self‑worth are the master keys to both extraordinary life and successful relationships, suggesting that when individuals lead fulfilling lives, attracting a great partner becomes a by‑product. The episode concludes with a hopeful message that women can break the "party‑town" stereotype by holding firm to their own standards, demanding more, and thereby standing out in the Miami dating scene.

Welcome to Miami.
I see the Vlog sites. Whoopie got a new wife. Shorty got a new boo. Yeah, love beautiful, but you gotta looking for relaxation. Gotta looking for relaxation.
My name is Natalie and I've lived in Miami for 20 years.
My name is Ollie Fowler and I was born and raised in Miami, so 28 years.
I'm Catherine and I've lived in South Florida for around 20 years now.
The dating scene in Miami is really interesting.
Seems like everyone goes for money, a status.
There's like different kinds of guys.
Typical Miami guy, it's like a surf, a metro surfer.
A tighter shirt. The gelled hair.
It depends like what pocket of the city they're from or if they're a transplant.
There's so many options it's really hard to make a connection with someone.
They date, date, date and they just keep going into oh you're not good enough and let me see what the next option is.
It's an interesting time to be in the city. There's a lot more arts and culture taking place so it's a fun time to be here whereas before there was just a lot of partying and not much else. It's also a transient city and so people come here with different intentions. There's a lot of beautiful people in the city city as well. So there's a playful culture. A lot of people are just out for fun. So it can be challenging to find somebody to get serious with.
Hi, guys. Hi, guys.
Hi, Matthew.
Hi, Natalie. Hi, Natalie.
How are you?
Come grab a seat. Let's sit down. I'm very excited to speak with you today. I think Miami is a challenge. I know that's not news to you, but you have to, of course, in my position, you have to come and feel a place out. You have to see it for yourself. You have to test certain stereotypes. Everywhere I go in the world, they have their excuses. And they're always unique to the place in some way or another. They always seem to justify where we are in our love lives or in our lives in general. What's it like to date here?
There's good guys here too, but there's very eccentric individuals. And I think it's because they come here with like, no one's gonna know who I am and like, this is like play town.
There's different personalities. They give these personas that I'm this, I'm that, and I will treat you good. And then the next second, they're just showing their true colors.
Yeah, it's like everyone's looking for something better because that's the thing. There's so many beautiful people here and so many people are just like, Down to have a good time, no strings attached. It makes it hard for someone who wants something a little more stable.
Perceived challenge. People need to see us as a challenge. If we come too easily, we will not be valued. It doesn't matter what your actual value is, don't expect people to value it if it comes to them too easy. Now, I'm not talking about playing hard to get. I don't believe in hard to get. Hard to get is, let me dangle string in front of a cat. Cat goes crazy, cat goes crazy, cat goes crazy, cat goes crazy. Then you drop the string and the cat goes, oh, it's a string. And the problem with it is it builds the excitement around the chase, not around you. What makes you a challenge, above all, is your standards.
What do guys try and do typically.
On a first date?
What are you doing?
Netflix and chill.
Netflix and chill. Or what are you doing at 2 a.m.?
When a guy realizes he cannot just do whatever it is he wants, that there are standards that he has to live up to in order to keep you around and keep you engaged and keep you attracted. When he finds that that's true, he'll become even more attracted.
See, I think that really what it comes down to is that we each have a personal standard. And we have to figure out how to communicate that standard to somebody else who we've barely met in a way that is fun and playful and serious at the same time, but not afraid to be confrontational with it.
We have to figure out a way.
To communicate our standard. in a really beautiful, elegant way that actually gives someone a clue as to how to please us. So how well do you think you guys communicate what it is you're attracted.
To and what it is you want.
In a way that gives a guy guidelines as to how to be with you?
I feel like I've gotten a lot better over time. Like, I've matured a lot and Before I used to be scared to say things because I'm like oh if I say that he's not gonna like me. But now I think there's a way to communicate things while still being nice and showing interest and not being aggressive. Like for instance, once a guy invited me out on a date and he said come over for dinner, I'm gonna cook for you and it was the first date. So I was like there's no way I'm going to this guy's house. Like I don't know anything about him. and I said that's really nice of you, I would love to go out with you, but I just don't do house calls, like I made it funny. He was like that's cute. Yeah, he laughed and he's like okay, okay, and it was actually Valentine's Day, so it was already like a day full of pressure, so he's like hold on, and he organized like a group of his friends, found the wine bar, and we did a group date, and it was great, it was very relaxed.
So being a challenge, is not about, oh, I don't want you. Maybe I do. I'm not sure. Being a challenge is, I like you, or at least what I know so far. I think you're cute. I think you're hot. I think you're sexy. I'm curious about you. But knowing that you have a high standard that someone has to meet going forward for you to remain that curious, for you to remain that attracted. I feel like you've given me a really great introduction.
I'm gonna have to go and see some of it for myself of course this weekend. But I can't wait to see you guys on Sunday. Thank you so much for coming.
Thank you.
Until we see each other again. Maintaining your standards, once you've already decided you like someone is extraordinarily difficult and it requires an extraordinary level of confidence. This is where confidence really comes in. The knowledge that you are worth more, the knowledge that you will find someone else if this person isn't up to scratch and quite frankly, the decision that if someone doesn't live up to your standards, they weren't right for you anyway. That someone can't be right for you and simultaneously fall beneath your standards, it's not possible. I've been working on this for years. You guys have spent long enough with me now to know that this isn't just about dating. This is something much bigger than that. This is about the ability to actually lead an extraordinary life. Because in my experience, when we lead an extraordinary life, finding someone great is a byproduct. It's a byproduct. The master key is confidence and happiness. Having got to the end of this little journey in Miami, It's clear to me that some of the reasons that the women have given for why dating and love is difficult here hold a little bit of water. You know, it is a party party town. It is a place where there seems to be a certain transience to it. But that doesn't mean that it has to be as difficult as everyone says it is. The thing that I really hope that the women got from this experience is that if we have our own personal standard, irrespective of how everyone else is around us, we don't have to be part of the paradigm of the place that we live in. If we demand more, other people will give us more and we will be the person that truly stands out. So I really hope they took away how important it is that they have their own standard and they don't let it be changed by the standard of the men in the place they live in. So I'll see you guys next time around. I really hope you're enjoying this. Leave us a comment and tell us how you're feeling about these. I'm so enjoying making them. It's a completely different spin on what we're doing, but it's so much fun and I'm back in in learning mode, which is exactly where I want to be.
I see the vlog sites.
Whoopie whoop.
Got a new wife. Shorty got a new boo. Yeah, love you. I'm happy being single.
