Why NOW is the Best Time in History to Date (Matthew Hussey, Get The Guy)

Matthew Hussey argues that dating apps have turned people into "zombies" lacking face-to-face skills, creating a massive advantage for men who can still approach women in person. He estimates one real-life connection is worth about twenty online messages, and notes many women men compete against online don't exist in reality.

Dating. I believe this year might be the best year in history to date. I am fully serious. Think for a moment about the inefficiency of dating right now. Here's what you have. More and more people are becoming zombies. They cannot talk to a human being. They are forgetting. Even the people that used to know how to do it are forgetting. They're out of practice. They're rusty as hell. They're forgetting how to do it. And they're all sitting there getting their hits from this video game, a dating app. It's a video game. It's not real life. It's a video game. I think men are craving real interactions, great moments of depth, of romance. I think men are not given enough credit for how romantic they are. I don't even know if they know how romantic they are. But they want that feeling of being 13 again and having a crush on the girl at school and having to look at her from across class for four weeks before he even gets the courage to say, all right, all right. See ya. Men and women crave men and women who are good socially and who know how to genuinely build attraction in person. At the same time as the number of people who can do that is decreasing. We are hungry for it now. At a time when it seems to be nowhere to be found. This is the best time ever to be somebody who can talk to human beings. Do you understand what advantage a guy has now that can approach a woman? A guy that can approach a woman. He's not competing with the hundred people who messaged you on some dating site. He's not competing with them because they don't mean anything to you. You know as well as I do that someone who can come up and have a little moment of connection with you in person is worth 20 of the people that message you on a dating app. As a man, I would rather be competing with men today than any other time in history. You understand that, like, the men of the 50s may have been complete cads. They may have all the Mad Men world of them playing around and cheating or whatever, but they knew how to be charming. They had to be. They knew how to talk to a woman. I don't want to compete with that guy. I don't want to compete with Don Draper. I want to compete with Todd, who sat at the bar tindering Sparkle Skirt 22, while I go and talk to the woman who's actually in the room. He's not my competition. He's not even looking up as a woman. Please tell me, Tell me you'd rather compete with women from another age. You want to compete with Marilyn Monroe giving eyes to a guy across the bar? Or Tiffany, who, while she's on a date, is checking her phone to see how many likes she got on her last cleavage selfie? Right, because that's who you're competing with now. We're always the best selfies. By the way, the hashtag will be like beautyisontheinside. Always. Always. That's the kind of hashtag always feeling blessed, humble. I woke up like this. It's always that shit. No, you're not competing with Monroe. You're competing with Tiffany. And Tiffany doesn't know what the hell she's doing. And guess what, Tiffany. Her Instagram. Tiffany doesn't even exist. That girl isn't real. He's gonna show up to a date with her, and she's not gonna look like any one of the 1,000 pictures that she has on her. They have an app now that literally will allow you to mold your body. Have you seen this? You can add a six pack. The people you think you're competing with are a world of women that don't exist. Think of that. It's this whole land of people that don't exist. It's amazing. Hope that it gets worse and worse.
