4 Tips to Vlog Every Day

Matt Ragland breaks down how to vlog daily: pick one idea per day, edit minimally, use B-roll to vary pacing, and publish no matter what. He contrasts this with his friend Cliff's intensive editing approach and emphasizes shipping over perfection.

Hey, what's up everyone? Welcome. My name is Matt Ragland. Welcome to my channel. So glad that you're watching this. The thing that I want to talk to you about today, what you're going to learn, is how you can vlog every single day. I'm going to give you a framework. I'm going to give you 4 steps that you can follow, especially if you— maybe you've never vlogged at all, maybe you certainly haven't vlogged every single day, and maybe you're doing something like I am right now vlog every day in August. And so I want to give you some tips here, something that will help you keep going, something to give you structure and give you a plan for the rest of this month. Number 1: 1 idea every day. I can't emphasize this enough. Too often people put too many ideas in one vlog episode, and it really makes it difficult for you to keep going with your ideas throughout the rest of the month. There are 31 days in August, right? Right. There are 31 days in August, which means you need 31 ideas. You need 31 topics. Don't shove 5 into one 15-minute video, 20-minute video, when you can have 5 3-minute videos. The math is correct. Number 2: Keep your editing simple. Again, unless you have a bunch of time, unless you like just really want to get into this and spend 2-3 hours— saw my friend Cliff, You should check out his channel. Cliff spent 6 hours editing his vlog and it looks amazing. But yeah, I'm, I'm not going to spend 6 hours doing this. So especially when I want to do this every single day, this is a part of an additional job that I have with ConvertKit. It's also like I have a 2-year-old. So, you know, I'm not going to spend 6 hours editing. Keep the editing simple. All right. Don't worry about a ton of jump cuts. Don't worry about getting rid of every single, like, um, you don't have to get rid of every single one. All right, number 3: use B-roll shots to break up the pace and provide bumpers for your content. What do I mean by that? That's what I did at the beginning with a shot, and that's what I'm going to do at the end of this with a shot. And you can break it up with the, like, here's the finished thing. Don't look at them all, you don't get to see number 4 yet. Provides a little bit different pace.. It keeps people's minds engaged because you're seeing a different shot. It's just a little bit different thing. A little bonus on top of this, like 3A, is that if you are doing this like in iMovie or Premiere or Final Cut Pro, is go ahead and detach the audio from your video. That way you can, you can take out the video aspect while still having the underlying audio and put your other clip on top of that. Number 4, this is the most important one. You have to ship. You have to ship this every single day. That's why you started doing this vlog every day in August. All right? So you have to ship. It doesn't matter how good it is. It doesn't matter how bad you feel it is. It doesn't matter what people say. You committed to this, so make sure that you do it. My friend James Clear, who is an incredible writer, you should check out his blog. I've linked to it in the description below. He says that when he started writing, and he wrote, I think, twice a week for 4 years. And his rule was, it doesn't matter how I feel about it, and it doesn't matter if I think it's good, which I guess is kind of the same thing. What matters is that on Tuesday and Thursday I ship a new article. Number 1, one idea each day. Number 2, keep your editing simple. Number 3, use those B-roll shots to provide a little bit of flavor, a little bit of change of pace, show a little bit more about your day. And number 4, you must ship. All right everyone, hope you've enjoyed this. Make sure to subscribe below. Leave a comment. Let me know how you keep the pace up. Let me know how you stay dedicated to vlogging every day in August. Take care and have a great weekend.
