Another New Home

Matt Ragland and his partner Morgan moved to Chattanooga for Morgan's travel nursing job while Matt works remotely for ConvertKit. They're sleeping on an air mattress in a cinder-block room with no water or internet, cooking rice and beans, and documenting the temporary setup that feels like camping.

Hi everyone, welcome to our new bedroom. Hi. We're not talking very loud because Kanan is literally over there.
Behind the cinder block wall.
Yeah, I probably have to talk a little louder than that. So welcome to today's vlog. You can thank Morgan for making this happen. Tonight and just in general. Oh, okay. Because it was gonna be 2 videos tomorrow if not this, and now you get to experience this with us. So we moved to Chattanooga today and we're in our lovely new surroundings. And I never thought I'd be doing a video in the bedroom or that it would be a different video.
A different video?
Yeah, like a workout or something.
Ah.
Wrought. So we moved today and there's always a lot of emotions around moving and even though this isn't like a real like long-term move, we're here for at least 8 weeks, maybe a little longer depending on how the travel nurse thing goes. So if you watch the video from a couple of days ago, you know that we came here because Morgan's doing some travel nursing, and since I'm fortunate to work at ConvertKit, I get to work wherever I am. And so we really felt led down this path to be able to pay down some debt, things that we wanted to do. And yeah, this is the biggest lever that we could pull to make some of those debt payoffs happen. So I've felt really anxious today, which— and one of the things that I think is nice that Morgan brought up is that we rarely freak out at the same time.
Very rarely.
And that's not good.
I don't think we do freak out at the same time.
So usually one of us freaks out and the other's like Super calm. Yeah, it's almost like scary calm. We actually talked about this yesterday because like yesterday you were freaking out a little more.
Yeah.
And I was calmer. Yeah. And we had to talk about just that when the other person is the calm one, that the one who's anxious or worried or feels like things are out of control or afraid— that was on me today. That we know just because the other one isn't freaking out along with them— I even tried that a little yesterday and it didn't go well.
Didn't go well.
Didn't go well.
Needed him to be calm.
Is that one, we need the other person to be calm, and two, just because the other person isn't also, "Argh!" doesn't mean they're not concerned or like frustrated about something, but we 99% of the time we balance each other really well, which is, yeah, a really great gift of ours. The only other thing that I wanted to bring up today is that— I know, I'm just gonna keep going, you're gonna love it— is it really does feel like camping. Yeah, in a sense.
We are on an air mattress.
We are on an air mattress. I don't want to mess up the shot or like the stability, the stability of the little GorillaPod we have. But we are on an air mattress. Obviously, you know, we're in a space cozy, cozy cinder block.
We currently have no water.
No, but yeah, we don't— we have no water. We have no internet, which is basically like camping.
Camping on Mars.
Yeah. When I talked to the lady at the fiber network here in Chattanooga, she's like, what are you gonna do without the internet for 2 days. I was like, oh no, and I work on the internet.
Yeah.
Um, so we, you know, we've made it, made it work. And yeah, like, uh, we just kind of, without anything, we haven't been camping in a long time, sadly. But we did, you know, slip. Morgan pointed out we slipped into our normal roles.
It was like all of a sudden I was like, oh my gosh, we're doing our camping roles. Matt always cooks the food. He'll cook, he'll make rice, which we had tonight, and beans, which we had tonight. And I just naturally went into preparing our sleeping quarters. That's putting up the tent, getting the ground pads ready. Kanan's back in play in our air mattress. Yeah, it was really funny. All of a sudden I was like, oh my gosh, Matt, we're doing a big thing.
Yeah, it's really cool to see that. Um, well, thank you for watching this tonight if you made it this far with us. And yeah, I really appreciate it. There's gonna be more videos, and, uh, I said we're— I'm doing this, uh, not just because I enjoy it, but Oh, I know we're gonna enjoy looking back at this, and I hope we might look back at this and get some kicks out of it. So have a great night. See you tomorrow. Bye.
