Getting Onboard

Matt Ragland uses Bonjoro to send personalized welcome videos to new ConvertKit users, treating onboarding like inviting someone into your home. He records a quick greeting with their name, and the approach has gotten positive feedback from users.

Hey, good morning everyone! Outside of the new Frothy Monkey in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Let's go in and check the place out, all right? Me, I always like to sit on the end of the table. This, and preferably on the right end of the table. Right-handed, and so it gives me a little bit more space. Fantastic. So today, going back to Workhorse, get cranking on the day. I had solid internet, maybe not great for calls. Definitely going to be back. I really love that I can ride my bike places to get to work, get to coffee. It's one of my favorites. Lately I've been working a lot on how we onboard people to ConvertKit. And if you don't really know what that is— lately I've been thinking a lot, working a lot, onboarding people to convert kit. So giving them that first experience, and that's really what it is. It's welcoming them, welcoming a new person, a new customer, and what's that like for them. I had a friend tell me that it's a lot like bringing someone into your home for the first time. You want to show them around, and some people kind of like to explore, and some people just like to be told where things are right away. And you would tell them the basic things like, here's the bathroom. Mainly making people feel like they're welcome in the place that you've brought them into. <LYRICS>Homey.</LYRICS> Whenever you welcome someone into your home, you normally do that face-to-face. We don't really have the benefit of that with a digital company. With a physical place, you welcome someone into the coffee shop with a smile and a "Hi, how are you?" But to do that when every transaction is digital, how do you do that? Literal welcome videos. And we'll get a notification, we're using an app called Bonjoro, and we'll get a notification that a new person has signed up. We might know a little bit about them depending on the information that they provide us. And if I have a name, then I will literally record a quick video and send it to them and say, "Hi Adam, hope you're doing well." "Hi Jane, hope you're doing well. Thanks for signing up for ConvertKit." As you'd guess, we got a lot of good feedback from that. Uncharacteristically chilly day. The dogwoods and cherry blossoms are in full bloom. One of my favorite natural events. Okay, it's nice kind of stretch the legs and clear the mind by having a short walk. Got a lot of work to do. It is nice to create some mind space by doing this and just share what I'm working on. It is time to stop talking and start creating and not get hit by cars. I want you to see how different the weather is in front of me and behind me. La la la, what a beautiful day. This is lovely and incredible. Blue skies. Oh my gosh, what is that?
