More on Fear

Matt Ragland explores his fear of technical skills despite building a career on soft skills. He's tackling two quarterly challenges in 2023: a vlog series and a data-analysis coding project, both documented on video. He invites viewers to commit to their own 8-10 week learning sprint.

Hey, so continuing to play on this theme of fear today, second video today, and I talked in the morning about how I was really afraid of doing— and it may sound silly, but hanging drapes on the wall. You can go back, watch episode 19, and it got me thinking about what am I afraid to do, like in my work, what am I afraid to do now? Is there anything in my work that I'm worried about. And for a long time it was like doing webinars and workshops. Scared the piss out of me. Led to me not continuing at a company when I just really sucked at one. And the thing that I keep coming— the thing that I keep coming back to is that I really want to have some kind of technical skill skill. All right. Yes, Kanan wants to play. Slay the dragon. Fighting dragons. And part of my feeling around that is I want to be really well-rounded in my life, and so far what I've accumulated in my career so far is a lot of soft skills. Not that those are bad, they're really good. It's gotten me and made me who I am today, but I want to round that out more with some more technical hard skills because I've realized that Because I've realized I, I realized I really admire people who balance both sides of those hard and soft skills really well. My parents do it. My dad does it really well. He's a CPA who is also a pastor. I don't know how much more balanced that can be. My wife does it really well, being a loving mother and wife and also being really technically sound as a nurse. So I was thinking about how I really admire a lot of people who balance both the hard and the soft skills really well. There's like my parents, just from the time I was born, like my mom, great mom, accomplished, you know, musician, really technically sound teacher. Also my dad being a CPA and a pastor 2 sides of kind of the hard-soft skill spectrum there. And then even my wife, who's a great mother and wife and also a really technically sound nurse. So her technical knowledge keeps people alive, and I really admire that about all of them. And there are other people in my life that are like that.
Hey, good morning. Thanks for joining me again on today's walk just to put a bow on now last night's thought on fear and trying new things and trying to make progress on stuff that you really want to learn.
I'd—
something that I'm doing this year are these sets of quarterly challenges, things that take 2 or 3 months to practice and learn and then review and see how much I want to keep going on them. The first one for this year is this vlog and putting it together and practicing and editing and just seeing what the response is like. The second one is going to be this kind of data analysis coding challenge and something I'm still going to be vlogging about and doing videos for, but that's the second challenge of the year is see how, how can this work, how good can I get at this. So the takeaway for you is I'd like to see in the comments— I ask to see in the comments— is there anything like that for you? Something that you've really wanted to try, something that you've been kind of pushing off, and make, make a decision on it, which is what I'm, what I'm trying to do. So either put like, say, 8 to 10 weeks into learning it a little bit at a time, or decide I've been wanting to do this for a long time, it hasn't happened, maybe it's because I just don't want to do it.
And just feel free to, you know, make that choice as well.
Thanks again for watching these and subscribing. Go ahead and make any comments that you have, and I would love to chat with you about them. Going down to the last 10 days of this challenge, so I really appreciate you being a part of it. And let me know what you think about continuing, what kind of videos you've liked, what you'd like to continue to see, and would love to take all that into account. All right everyone, have a great day. Bye!
