My Tiny Home Office Setup - Tips for Saving Space & Staying Organized

Matt Ragland tours his reorganized home office, showing how he uses a craft cabinet, labeled boxes, and pegboards to store cords, camera gear, and tools. He built a custom overhead rig on a SwitchPod and runs power from an adjacent room with a Belkin strip to keep cables hidden.

Hey, what's up everyone? My name is Matt, and today I'm giving you a tour of my office. If you are here and have been here for bullet journal productivity videos— actually, I'm not going to get into that. What? Okay, I found this on the web. What was the inspiration for a lot of this stuff? Check it out. Apparently I asked Siri what was the inspiration for a lot of stuff, returned a bunch of stuff references. Here we go. I can just imagine my views dropping right now. But I hope you stick around because I'm going to show you how I've been organizing my office over the last couple of months. I cleared a lot of things out, I organized much better, and it has made— surprise, surprise— for a very nice working environment. And so I'm just going to show you through the office, give you a little walkthrough of everything. You can— if you've been watching my videos for a while, then you are, you know, just going to see a little bit more behind the scenes of this little space that I'm in, that I've done pretty much every single video in here, especially over the last 2 years. Hey, quick thing before I show you the office is next week I have a big announcement. The end of the year is coming up. We're going into 2020. It's a new decade, a new year, obviously. And I have something really cool, something I've been working on literally all of 2019 to share with you. So keep your eye on notifications, on videos, everything, because Monday, possibly Tuesday, I'm going to have a new video kind of giving you an idea, a framework, structure that you can take into 2020 to make it your best year ever. And I'm going to be doing a private training next week, 2 days, totally free, just got to sign up, but I'm going to share that link and everything with you next week. So keep an eye out for it. And now let's get into the office tour using my handy-dandy SwitchPod for this. So let me go ahead and show you. This is what you're used to seeing on the background. So you've really only seen this part of the desk because this is where I do the overhead shots. You know, you're used to seeing it kind of up here like this, obviously without the, you know, kind of stand that I have. But this is where I rig up the camera. My friend Mike built this for me. But it just, you know, attaches with a simple wood housing onto this clothes rack. And then there's just a little, yeah, a little screw right there, a little eye bolt that I then screw into the bottom of the camera. So that's how I get the overhead shot. There's a ring light there. The part that I really like is all the organization now I have on these shelves over here. This is something that I shared in the email newsletter list. A couple of weeks ago, but these are just like a ton of different things that were always really hard to organize in like more traditional stores. So I got this huge craft cabinet. So this could be USB cords, iPhone chargers, stamps, batteries, Alexa switches, stickers, stuff that used to be just like thrown into a, like, a larger box now has like a a nice small specific home. And down here is an homage to Casey Neistat's Red Box collection. A bunch of different pens and pencils, you know, the right stuff. Pouches, stands, rigs, first aid, different tools. They're a great size, lock really well, keeping the kids out. And then as you can see, I keep a ton of stuff in here. So pens, pencils, permanent markers, whiteboard markers, everything goes here. And it's just really easy. They're very stackable, very cheap too. I think these are like $6 apiece. These are all, these are all of my Field Notes. Well, not all of them, most of them. But these all up here are new. These are all complete. I'm gonna start giving some of these away because as you can tell, I have plenty. More pens that I use a little bit more often here. And this is white sage, by the way. White sage, not anything else. The other thing that I have that I really like is this tool wall with the kind of upgraded pegboard. I'm not much of a tool guy, but I do have a handful of them, and so being able to always see where they are and have a really good look at them— it's my favorite mug. Up here is where I have a bunch of stuff that I don't necessarily need regular access to, but I still want to know where it is. So there is a camp stove up there, a couple of old routers,. There are just a bunch of boxes. Yeah, I just put a label on them. So just stuff. I really like this little thing. It just came. Light is not, is not my friend, but just a little hanging wall calendar from Field Notes. Coming over here, another pegboard. This one is more for camera equipment. The old Joby GorillaPod, dead cat for the microphone that's on this camera, this great print from Hat Show, and then the bookshelf that you're all very used to seeing. This other thing that I just kind of got and have started using not too, not too much. I got this long shower rod and ran it across the top, but now I have like this dark kind of different backdrop. I don't personally like it as much as the bookshelf. I know a couple of you have commented that you like it better, so I am going to be doing some more videos with it. My papers, my business papers. Do have this giant Belkin power strip. Weird thing about this room is that it doesn't have a power— it doesn't have an outlet in it, so I run it in from the next room. Wife not a fan of that. And then last little bit right here underneath the standing desk is where I'll put up some other things. And so I hang some clothes right there that I might need to like pop on if I have a meeting, or like jackets. I do wear a shirt. When I'm working. Just if I have to wear a nicer shirt for a video call, that's what those are for. I have a bunch of Command hooks up here for hanging backpacks and other miscellaneous things as well. And then other tensioning rods so that I put some tape there, noise-canceling ear protection. Down here, I guess the only other really random thing is just a big trunk for putting like big random miscellaneous things in. All right, so that is the office tour. That's everything. Let me know what you think. It is something, it's a video that I've been wanting to do for a while. So let me know in the comments what your favorite part of the new office setup is, and let me know your favorite part of the area that you get to work, because I do think it's fun and it's nice to find a little joy, a little happiness, no matter what work we're doing, no matter where we're working. But like, especially if you work in a home environment, yeah, just kind of sprucing it up a bit and like having a little bit of joy in the place that you work. And I think that will increase the kind of joy that you have in your work. So hope you are having a great day. Have a great weekend. This is going up over the weekend, and be on the lookout next week because I have huge announcement early in the week. Keep your eye out, ring the bell, subscribe, do all of those things because the new year is coming up and I have some really cool stuff to share with you starting next week. All right everyone, thanks so much and I will see you Next week. Bye.
