The #1 Goal When You're Starting A YouTube Channel

Matt Ragland explains why consistency matters more than perfection when starting YouTube. He published daily videos early on and recommends the YouTube 10 challenge: 10 videos in 5 weeks with community support and templates to keep you accountable.

When I started creating videos on YouTube in February 2017, my only goal was to publish a video every day for 30 days. I had tried to make great videos before that and had failed tremendously because I didn't have much confidence or experience publishing any videos, much less great videos. When I changed my mindset and my goal, to publish videos consistently instead of trying to make them incredible works of art, whatever that meant to me back then, I started to become better at creating better works of art as videos. And that, my friends, is the key not just to success on YouTube, but success in many creative fields, that the more consistent and dedicated and focused you are on the craft, the better you will become. Whether you like it or not. This iPhone 7 is what I filmed most of my first 50 videos on. The 50 videos after that, I used this Nikon D5100 and this thing is a big old bulky beast. But they were just cameras that I had. And to be totally honest, there's not a whole lot of difference between like this Nikon D5100 and this iPhone 7. The iPhone 7 honestly is probably better video quality. What was important was that I started filming, I started making things, I started to get better as an editor. And through doing this, I did what Ira Glass calls closing the gap between who you are as a creator now and who you intend or aspire to be as a creator in the future. I have to admit, I've felt a little stuck on YouTube over the summer. My productivity videos are always kind of naturally slow during the summer, which is fine and understandable. But now I'm kind of getting back into my YouTube rhythm. I've said a lot of the things that I know to say about productivity and Bullet Journaling, and I miss the consistency of doing multiple videos per week. Because when you give yourself permission to publish consistently, you will become more confident in your work and how you can produce and the type of videos that you want to create. Any of you that have done the Ship 30 for 30 challenge, amazing thing. I have a video coming out about it, but you know that just by shipping a short, actionable, focused essay every single day, you naturally start to come up with more ideas. And this is something that I want to apply to YouTube a little bit more as well. James Clear famously said that when he was starting his writing habit, especially his publishing on jamesclear.com habit was that he would publish a post every Monday and Thursday, no matter how long it was and no matter how he felt about it. Ship 30 for 30 captures part of that as well, that you're going to publish a 250-word essay-ish, 250-ish words every day, no matter how you feel about it. And often we get stuck on that when it comes to YouTube. I will say, like, daily videos on YouTube, but you really have to grind through that. It can be amazing because at the end of 30 days you have 30 videos and the confidence that comes with that, but it is a grind. So what I'm going to be doing starting the week of September 20th, 2021, is publishing 2 YouTube videos a week for the next 5 weeks. If you're interested in starting a YouTube channel or kickstarting an existing YouTube channel, if you want to be a part of this with me, I'm just going to go ahead and tell you that I have a little community going if you would like to join to learn how to publish on YouTube, learn how to edit videos. I'm going to use a tool called Descript, but I would love to have you be a part of this if you are interested in me helping you publish 10 videos on YouTube in the next 5 weeks, because this is absolutely something that you can do. There are a few things that people normally get stuck with. I know a lot of times I got stuck with and I still sometimes get stuck with when it comes to YouTube. It's like not, not feeling like your ideas are good enough, feeling like the technical details of either camera setup or audio or editing especially is too challenging. And the other part of it is like this kind of sinking feeling that if you, if you go over all those creative hurdles and you actually publish the thing, that no one is going to be around to like celebrate it with you and no one will recognize it, no one will watch it. That's really kind of a bummer. This is something that I've really liked about Ship 3430, and what I'm going to be doing is, like I said, gathering a little community of video creators to have the goal of publishing 10 YouTube videos together over a 5-week span. Like I said, it's going to start September 20th. If you want to be involved, it's just $47, and I'm still going to be sending out some free emails that if you just want to participate. But the reason that I did decide to like charge for this is because it's important. I have found through running several challenges and being a part of several challenges that the way you get things done and the way you stay committed and accountable is through literal buy-in. And so I wanted to make it affordable enough that pretty much anybody could do it if you have trouble with that cost, just let me know. But it is something that I'm really excited to do. I think we're going to have probably about 30, 40 people that are involved with, and I would love to have you be a part of it as well. All the information that you need to join the YouTube 10 Challenge is in the description below, but you can also go to mattrogland.com/youtube10 to learn more. Filming, editing, Publishing, promoting YouTube videos can be a big challenge no matter who you are and no matter how confident you are about creating different types of content. I had done a lot with writing and podcasting before I got into YouTube, and it still did and still does feel like a challenge. What I want to provide with the YouTube 10 Challenge is a space and a community for feedback, for encouragement, for accountability. And for some coaching to help you get over some of those challenges or a lot of those challenges to actually get to the point where you're not just publishing, but you're building confidence, experience, and expertise in your topic and in your ability to be really good at YouTube. I have made over 50 videos. Probably most of my first 50 videos were on an iPhone, and I'm going to show you iPhone-specific specific like tips and tricks and filming setups specifically for an iPhone or any kind of camera phone so that you can get started on YouTube with just a phone. It's that simple. And when it comes to editing, there's this really cool app that I've been using called Descript that literally makes video editing as easy and straightforward as editing a Word doc or a Google doc. If that sounds a little unrealistic or mind-blowing, It's totally true. And I'm going to show you like an exact editing video so you can get started and do some of this as well. But those are the two big things, like camera setup and editing are the two most challenging kind of technical pieces of getting started on YouTube. I'm going to make these really easy and straightforward for you from a technical perspective. We'll also talk about some of that mental mindset of like, yes, you are a person who can make videos, who can make them on YouTube, make them really compelling.. And those are all things going to help that I'm going to help you with other people in the community. So I'd love for you to be a part of it. I said I wanted to make it as affordable as I could while still giving you some actual like skin in the game, some buy-in to stay accountable and stay with it. Just go to mattrogland.com/youtube10 to sign up or get some more information on it. And last little shout out to Ship 30 for 30. And if you are a shipper, watching this video, you should know that the 30 atomic essays that you already published during your Ship 30 cohort, honestly, just select your 10 favorite essays from Ship 30. And I'm telling you, you already have 10 ideas for a video. So we're going to have some different templates and scripts and just like prompts for you to think through video ideas and how to make this fun, how to make this helpful. Even if you don't end up becoming a YouTuber in the sense that like I am, I guess you will still have like 10 high-quality, helpful videos that you can use for any projects or any personal work or even any creative professional work that you have going forward. Thanks so much for watching this video. Thanks for continuing to watch my videos. I'm getting more excited about YouTube again after a little bit of a break., and I am going to be producing 10 videos in the next 5 weeks starting the week of September 20th. So keep an eye out for a few more videos from me than normal. And if you want to be a part of the YouTube 10 Challenge as well, again, just go to mattreigler.com/youtube10 and you can get involved. Thanks so much for watching, and I'll see you in the next video. Mm-hmm.
