A short talk by Michael Erath about the emotional challenges organizations face when addressing people-performance issues and how reliance on narratives (the “storytelling trap”) can paralyze decision-making. He argues that adding objective data—specifically Culture Index assessments—helps clarify whether poor performance stems from role fit versus capability, enabling fairer, more effective actions for individuals and organizations.

When it comes to addressing people issues. I think because there's so much emotion involved in dealing with people and their livelihoods at stake and families their consequences beyond just the individual. We tend to get wrapped up in what I call the storytelling trap when people are not performing or they're not meeting expectations, and we can often get stuck there for a significant amount of time. And I think that's not fair to the individual. It's not fair to the team or the organization. And with the way we collaborate with Culture Index, it provides a layer of data that helps reinforce what we're seeing and what we're feeling, and it gives us more clarity in what the right action is to take. It's not always that somebody needs to be exited. It could be that we've got somebody wired for a specific role, We've got them in the wrong role. As Jackie said, kind of right person, wrong seat. And this data helps us see where would they be really strong and if they're a great culture fit. I think we owe it to them and the organization to try to find a right place for them. And. And it gives us just one more kind of leg of the stool to really complete that.
