Mike Minutes Mastermind 05/30/23

Mike Andes is launching a business challenge, publishing daily behind-the-scenes videos for a private course while hunting his first customer and employee. He bought a local gym with partial seller financing, rehired a former GM, and is running Facebook ads to fill schedules fast instead of spending on Google search.

What's up, Augustination? Hope you're doing super well. Let's go and get things kicked off. Looks like there was just one question that came in. But before we do that on the Facebook group, I did upload a video last night and I'll try to do that every evening of the challenge. I will not update it live, but we are going to create a separate course for all of you to see. It'll be private for all of us, but I'll release it towards the end of the month and that will basically kind of be the behind the scenes of what's going on. So for example, on the video that I posted this morning, day zero, yesterday evening I did one and I'll do that each evening. So that way when you're starting or your GM is starting, you can literally be like, hey, here's the blueprint for the first three days in video format, not just text. So should be good. Today I need to get my first employee. I need a customer because right now I'm starving hungry and I made the challenge yesterday that I would not eat until my first customer. So yesterday I got two estimates, but one person wasn't home, it was a drive by and I need them to be home because they didn't put anything on the web form of what they wanted and the other person did not submit their address correctly on the web form. So I was able to give them an estimate though because everything on the street was pretty much the same square footage.
So we'll see. They submitted pictures too on the web form, which is great. I'm seeing all this stuff for the first time, so it's pretty exciting. So I was able to do the estimate last night late on based on just the picture they sent. So yeah, it's gonna be good. So today I need to get a customer, I need to get employee. I gotta get the trucks all moved over to my shop space storage and I'm gonna pick up all my stuff from UPS store or door hangers, yard sign, etc. So yeah, so check out the video. I posted the one to Facebook this morning, kind of the behind the scenes. But I won't be doing that every day. Those will go into a separate playlist and then I'll make a kind of a private course for all of us towards the end of this month and then I'll kind of break that down. So my goal is that if you are just starting brand new, you can use that or if you're having a gm, you can literally tell them, here's what you should Be doing every single day. Like, you should be finding a storage space. Day one, you should be doing getting your door hangers there too. Like, it should be pretty much copy and paste. Hopefully.
We'Ll see if it's successful or not. At this point, I might die if I don't get customers soon. All right, Present share.
All right. Yeah. There's just one question from Kyle Tarvin. When you purchase the dim did already come with the GM running it, can you explain more how that process worked for you actually buying it? Yes, the process looked like this. I saw it went up for sale because I got. I get notified anytime a business in our county goes up for sale on bizbysell.com I set up the notification. So anytime a business goes for sale, it comes directly to me. I've had that for six or seven years like that. And it's always just helped me kind of keep a pulse on the local market as well as just valuations in general. And so.
The reason it piqued my interest right away when I saw it was because obviously I had worked there a couple years previously and I hadn't been working there for a while because I had started Augusta. Sorry. No, because I was finishing up school and I was doing lawn care still, I should say. And when I had done, like, some State Farm working at State Farm Credit Card Processing, Etc, saw it come up for sale, business buy. So literally called owner immediately. And he was like, dude, that was fast. It was less than five minutes from the time I clicked publish. And I basically said, I'm gonna buy it. I just gotta figure out the financing. At the time, I did not have $50,000 laying around.
And so he said, hey, look, what we'll do is I'll make sure that the day that we close, there's enough money set aside like the next, because basically they remit every month, which is basically, like, all the dues from the club. So that's usually around 30 grand. So he's like, if you can come up with 20 grand, I'll front you the 30, and then you'll just pay me back, like, two days after the closing. So it kind of worked out because I did 10% down on a $500,000 gym in terms of. In terms of GM. There was no GM there, actually. What I did is I contacted one that had worked there like a year prior and was really, really good and just said, hey, look, if you come back, I'll give you more money. And she was cool with that, and she was awesome. She actually ended up working at command center for a couple years and then she moved out to Hawaii.
Her name's Sammy. So some of you have probably already have worked with her at command center. So after the, the, the working at the gym, she worked at command center for a while as well. But the GM was not installed. So kind of I gutted that I, I let go all the people working at the gym besides one trainer and she's still with us today. She's worked there since day one when I was there and she's awesome. So she's also the mom of Terrell who's on the team as well as the mom of Christian Nelson. Their mom is a trainer that I kept on at the gym. And then Sierra Nelson, which is Christian's wife, also works at the gym. So we basically have the whole family. It's a family affair. It's great. All right, Logan, you said you're running Facebook ads. Can you give a quick rundown of what Facebook ads you're running, doing boosting, etc? Yeah, so.
Couple things. One, I am running basically more of a project based like property cleanups and small projects like summer projects. I add right now on Facebook because I need work. I just need to fill the schedule. And so that's going to go over the next couple of days. I'll kind of really start going into high gear on, on like door hangers, yard signs, every door, direct mail. All that's going to be firing off here is going to be geared more towards projects than I would like because I just need, I need to fill up one person's schedule right now. I don't have the luxury of just like slowly growing over the next three months and just like filling up my schedule and going and hiring someone. I need to fill one person schedule, hire somebody and book myself out a couple of weeks and then I'll really focus on recurring. So I'm going to do a little bit backwards most because I need speed. It's not going to be the most efficient way of doing it, but it will be the fastest. So I'm running more of a project based and that's why like yesterday the two leads that came in are cleanup ones or bush trimming. So it's just tough when you're in June, now we're hitting June and you know people are thinking about mowing a lot less. But I also need to grow recurring enough to where I hand this off to a GM that's not just going to drop off a cliff because there's no recurring work. Right. So I kind of Got to go backwards. I got to fill my schedule with projects, hire somebody, and then fill backlog with recurring to make sure they're busy going forward. We are going to have.
Jake Hundley from Evergrow speak at the Wednesday morning Franchise Conference in Louisville just for us. And one thing I was talking with him the other day is he is seeing consistently a lot of people spending too much money on Google Ads. He's saying. He says that if you have less than a hundred thousand people in your market, anything more than 15 or 20 per day is probably a waste of money in terms of Google Ads. And he's seeing it consistently. When people come to them, they're like, I want to spend a thousand dollars a month. I just want to grow maximum. It's like, look, you're probably wasting three or four hundred dollars of that. And so that's a little bit of a mind shift for me too. Obviously with performance max, when that which is not what they do, performance max, it can reach a broader audience through YouTube and going into the video side and banner ads, et cetera. But when you're doing just Google search, there's only so many people looking for your keyword. So spending beyond 10, 15 per day, he's saying in most of our markets that have less than a hundred thousand people is majority, that's going to be waste. So he's going to speak a lot about that and show some analytics at conference. So I'm really looking forward to that. But that's definitely a data point for me because I've always done the performance max where like, if I do have more of a budget, it gets pushed out to more people. It doesn't necessarily just bump up my customer acquisition cost or my cost per click cpc. So yeah, Logan says that makes sense. Are you doing more boosted posts or another type of ad on that program? I'm not a huge fan of boosted posts. I'd much rather do an actual ad. Let me show you exactly the ad I'm running.
I just set up my Facebook page.
I don't even think Command center has been connected yet. I connected on my end but like every one or two weeks it gets connected from our app that we use. So let me share this tab. So this is my Facebook page. You can see it's brand new. Just got started on I think Friday, Saturday.
Yeah. So I just do Ad Center. I just followed exactly what was on the done for you ads from the dashboard in the Academy. You can see here the results. 238 clicks. This is really what got me my two leads so far. They're not great, right? But I just put these up in terms of what they look like. I used exactly what was in the.
Whatchamacality done for you ads. The only thing I changed is the verbiage right here. Because this one specifically said summer is almost done, is almost over. I just took that part out. Just say, summer is here, but it's not too late to get your landscape project completed. So I got mowing cleanups. I got a carousel, basically, of pictures here and landscaping. So that's what I got going right now.
I usually give it three to four days at least, just to see if it's even worthwhile. And this is the fourth day going into our fourth day here.
All right, everyone, have a fantastic day. If you are interested, watch that video last night I posted or this morning I posted of last night, which is basically a recap of day one or day zero, technically, when we got here. And again, I will not be posting this every single day. I will make it a separate, private course for Augusta Nation. You can use that for either yourself or for future general managers to get up and running their first 30 days. All right, have a fantastic day. And everyone should be praying that I get an estimate accepted today, because otherwise I will shrivel up and die because I'm very, very hungry, and it's been over 24 hours now, and I just don't have a lot of fat to burn before I shrivel up and die. So we need a customer, and that's the goal for the day. All right, guys, take care.
