What It's REALLY Like Being Married to an Entrepreneur

Allie shares a day in her marriage to entrepreneur Mike Andes, who's building a lawn-care business aiming for $1 million in revenue within a year after their move from Washington to Texas. She handles meal prep, budgeting, and grocery shopping while pursuing remote work that lets her support his ventures. Their date night at Dallas Galleria shows how they protect intentional time together amid the chaos.

Gotta have video evidence he doesn't skip legs. Mike actually just started working with my coach, so he has a meeting, his first meeting of the day, in about 15 minutes. So my way of being able to help in that meeting is just by making sure he has his food prepped for him, ready to eat before he hops into that. His post-workout meal is veggies, chicken, and rice. Super basic gym-goer meal, but basic for a reason. It's because it works. It's ready for you, baby. These are some low-calorie sauces that go on top. This is like a tangy pickled dill flavor, and then this is like a sweet poppy sauce. Do you know what you're gonna go over with Nick and John?
I just want to start the weekly cadence and meetings.
Oh, they're gonna be weekly now?
Yeah, I'll do them while I'm here and then they'll keep doing them once I'm done.
Now that we're back from the gym, I got showered and everything. I'm ready for the day. Honestly, ever since moving to Texas, our days have looked so incredibly different just because Mike is doing this challenge where he's starting in a guest location from the ground up and he wants to scale it to a million dollars in revenue in one year. So that obviously is taking a lot of his time. Every day looks different. Not every morning are we able to go work out together. And later today we also are actually going to be able to spend the majority of the day together, just like working on our own things separate, which is pretty rare. Usually like we mostly just get to come together in the evening. Back home in Washington, we had our routine down to a T. Like he would basically go to work from 7:30 to 4:30-ish for the most part. Then we would just like connect at dinner, come together at the end of the day. It's just been a matter of adjusting to a new routine. And honestly, I've been loving it here so much. Since obviously our office is back in Washington, he doesn't really have like a brick-and-mortar office to go to, so he just mostly works from home. While he is doing his meetings this morning, I'm going to go to the grocery store and make sure that we're all good for the week. Now that he's on a meal plan, it's honestly so much easier to get groceries just because I like— I know I need to be buying the same things over and over. So we're actually also probably saving money that way. If you're new here, I've been working with a coach all of this year, and Mike just started with her as well, uh, this week. This is— he's still on his first week with her. What that entails is she gives us our meal plan and a workout routine. So a little like sidebar of that are a supplement routine. I, I'm not big into like supplementing to fix problems. I think like you can fix a lot of your health issues through diet, but that's a whole other topic. Both of our supplements mostly entail things like we wouldn't be getting through our diet. Enough creatine to support muscle recovery, same for amino acids, fish oil. He has like a multivitamin. I do a vitamin D3. Whenever we're living in Washington, we definitely were not getting enough vitamin D. Here in Texas, I'm sure we're getting A higher dosage. I'm currently filling up both of our little containers. It's super cool because it's labeled every day of the week, so it's easy to remember like what days you have taken it and which ones you haven't, which unfortunately last week Mike didn't do Tuesday and Friday, so I'm just filling up the rest. Oh wait, today is Friday, so he only missed Tuesday. This is another way that I'm supporting him on the back end, even though he's in the meetings right now. I'm not a part of that. I'm not like really in the day-to-day workflow that he is. I support on the back end, making sure he's getting all his meals in, especially now that he's on a meal plan, making Making sure his supplements are taken care of, going to the grocery store to make sure we have food that I can prep for him. There's definitely other things that I know that I can do behind the scenes and that I'm capable of, whereas like I don't know really much about software or building a lawn care business from the ground up. So this is the area that I can thrive. This is my department. And there we go, we're all set up for the week.
You're trying to move them up inside their career and you're wanting to create that culture inside the organization
in the long term. I'm actually originally from Alabama, and whenever I still lived there, my favorite grocery store was Aldi. Unfortunately, There's none. I don't know if there's any Washington State, but there was none in our area in Washington. So now that I'm back in Texas, back in the South, we have Aldi, we have Sprouts, we have all the amazing grocery stores, and I love it. I love grocery shopping, oddly enough. I know that sounds like so weird. You're probably like, you're singing weirdo. But like, I love grocery shopping. I love reading all the ingredient labels. I like getting healthy food. Now that we're on a meal plan, I am a little limited on my creativity whenever it comes to cooking stuff because it's like the same foods all the time. But I'm gonna head to Aldi just to make sure that we have things for over the weekend. The weekends are like mine and Mike's time. Like Saturday all day we spend together, and then Sunday we go to church. So I try to always make sure that I have everything done that I need to do, like as far as running errands, getting groceries, whatever it may be, cleaning the house. Like I always try to cover that ground throughout the week so that on Saturday I know we can 100% be present for each other and we're not worried about little things like groceries or like repairs around the house or cleaning up. I am well aware that we are very blessed and fortunate in that regard. A lot of people aren't able to just have one of the special else is working. You need both. Mike and I have had this conversation a lot because I have definitely been like, okay, what do I want to do as my own career? Like, I want to have my own thing that I can pour myself into and sharpen skills. And we've had so many conversations about this. That's still not completely off the table. Like, I'm still very young and have a lot of time ahead of me and opportunities, but it wouldn't make sense if I got a job as like a barista or a job working a 9 to 5 anywhere, honestly. Whenever I can help Mike throughout the day— his time is so valuable that like if I could save an hour of his time, that would probably be as valuable as me working 9 to 5 financially. Obviously I don't want that to be misinterpreted as like whatever, like life skills I want to learn, like it's not worth it. That's definitely not the case, but for now it just doesn't make sense. Another thing I love about Aldi is how cheap they are. I've seen a video on it before, like how they've made budget cuts to be able to have cheaper groceries, and I don't exactly remember how, but they definitely have even cheaper stuff than Costco, which is pretty surprising. That brings me to the next point. That is another way that I can save support Mike is by protecting our finances in a way where we're like— excuse me, I'm so sorry— just being more mindful about what we're spending money on, where our money goes. As I am mostly the one who swipes the credit card, in full transparency, just because I am the one that goes out to get groceries, clothes, whatever it might be. Just respecting him and all the efforts that he puts in to provide for us and not, and not take advantage of it or be wasteful with it. One thing I will say about shopping at Aldi is you better have a quarter for a cart or else you're going to be walking around like me. Arms full and I'm not even done yet. Hello. $22.34. Thank you so much. You as well. Leave it to me to park as far away as possible in the parking lot whenever I have my hands full. Quick haul. 2 things of blueberries because Mike needs them and I want them to last over the weekend. He needs them for his meal plan. I got some zucchini, it is my current vegetable at the moment. Green beans for him because He's getting tired of zucchini, I think. Strawberries and some eggs. I need to get back in the habit of keeping a quarter in my car because I was worried I would drop the eggs. Back to what I was saying about not having a 9-to-5 or a steady job. That is not to say that I don't find fulfillment anywhere else. I'm definitely trying to find something that allows me to have a way more flexible schedule so that if I do need to show up for him, run an errand for him, do whatever it may be, I have the flexibility to do so. So what that looks like for me is going to a coffee shop, working on the vlog, Or my social media, or any other admin tasks that I can get done on my computer. I might totally butcher how you say it, but Pax and Beneficia is my new favorite coffee shop here in the Dallas area. Their sugar-free vanilla syrup is sweetened with monk fruit, which is a rarity that I so appreciate. I'm like trying to limit my intake of sugar alcohols wherever I can, and so the fact that they have a more natural Natural option for their sweetener, ten out of ten. So yes, this is definitely going to be my go-to spot whenever it comes to working away from home. I definitely try to get out of the house every single day. I get cabin fever if I don't. Honestly, Mike has said multiple times, like the way he feels the most loved is whenever he feels supported. My way of doing that is filling my cup in other ways besides just our relationship, because if I'm just depending on him for fulfillment or that's like my only outlet and I'm completely codependent on him. That's putting a lot of expectations on somebody that they won't always be able to fulfill, and that would be very, very unfair. I try to fill my own cup, do things separate from our relationship that also benefit me and that I'm very interested in, and that would be my social media and also editing. That is what brings me to the coffee shops most times. Sometimes I just like to bring my lunch here, which I did. I did pack my lunch and get some work done so I can have a productive It's a really productive part of my day, and I just feel so much better for it. I finished up with my editing in the coffee shop before Mike got done with his work, so he's just finishing up and then we'll probably head home. But every day does look different. I'm actually so grateful that we are able to work side by side. I'm sure a lot of wives of entrepreneurs would get this, but like whenever he works from home, and I don't mean this in a bad way at all, this is just the reality of it. Whenever he works from home, like, and even if we're sitting next to each other, it's like he's there but he isn't because we're not like talking or we're not like spending, in my mind, quality time. We're just there together and his mind is elsewhere and I'm working on my own thing. And that's not meant to be like a good or bad thing. It just is. My goal with this video is to kind of speak to the wives of other entrepreneurs who kind of feel like it is different. than being the wife of someone who has a 9 to 5, who has a job over there or has a boss to answer to. Because once they get home from work, it's kind of like they can unplug. But an entrepreneur, it's— you're on 24/7. We're still learning every day how to adjust and like what our proper workflow looks like, because sometimes it is a little bit difficult to separate like what does our quality time look like and what does time together look like. For a while, for Mike, it was like, well, we've been together all day, like, but yet I still wanted more quality time. But to me, it's like quality time is When we unplug, we can give each other our full attention and like have meaningful conversations, and we're not just around each other. There's a difference to me between like being together and being around each other. So maybe some of you ladies can relate to that. But that was something we had to work through too, because like I just had a different idea of what quality time looked like. So it was just a matter of me figuring out how to communicate that properly. I know it's such like a common thing to say, such like a cliché thing to say, like oh communication is so key for a healthy relationship, but it is so true. Like I still am not the best communicator, but it's definitely. gotten better over time. Ultimately, you have to realize your spouse does love you, and they're working as hard as they are for you and for you guys to build a life together. It just takes a matter of communicating that with each other, because it can seem like on the surface that your partner cares more about their business than you, just because that's where the majority of their time goes, especially in the phase of building it whenever it's first starting out. But you just have to realize that is not true. They are pouring so much time into it because they care about you and because they want to build a life that both of y'all enjoy and benefit from. So that's taken me a lot of time to grasp, honestly, and completely understand. Just a matter of realizing, like, him loving me doesn't mean he needs to spend every waking moment with me, or that even if he goes a day longer at work or the majority of his hours are spent at work, that he doesn't love me. That's not the case. It's Friday night, which means it's date night. Usually for date night, we get dressed, We go to a nice restaurant, but this date night looks a little different. We're at the Galleria in Dallas, which is probably the biggest mall here in the area, just to get steps in inside because it is a little toasty right now. Uh, Michael looking for just like nice short or low-top work boots, is that right?
Yeah.
You guys, there's a skating rink in here. This is insane. And count them, 1, 2, 3, 4 levels. Of this mall, we struck out at the mall. So attempt number two,
in it to win it.
Fun fact about Michael: he's a huge sneakerhead, and although we came in here for boots, he's getting a little distracted.
I had to come see them because they're orange.
They match your shirt like almost perfectly.
Uh, Banzo, are you colorblind? That's way lighter than this.
They're both orange. Tomato tomato. Looks like they went through a cheese shredder. All right, folks, we struck out yet again at Dick's Sporting Goods, but let's hope we don't strike out here. You know what I'm saying? We want to get a home run here in Topgolf. Is that proper sports?
No, I think you mean a hole in one.
We're gonna go get a touchdown. Goal! We're on the first floor, which kind of stinks, but that's okay.
Hey guys, how are you?
Good, how are you?
I'm great, thank you. My name is Allie. I'll be here for you guys tonight.
Um, I think I'm good for now.
No water or anything?
I think I'm fine. Yeah.
Okay, no worries. Can I go ahead and just get a card on file for the gameplay?
Yes. All right, batter up! For those of you guys who don't know, Mike almost went pro or something like that in golf. He was an amazing player. I've only been told this. This was before my time, but you can just see in the way he hits This man used to be a pro. That's right, that's right. That's my husband. Home run! I noticed you didn't use that thing. Why? Why didn't you use that thing?
That's the way you're supposed to do it, but—
Oh really?
Well, you're fine.
Is it dominant hand over or under?
Your right the first time. Yep. Your left arm straight.
Like that?
Yeah. Now this one straight.
This one?
This one goes in like a chicken wing and it rotates around your body. That goes in here. Lock that into your— on your hip like this. Yep. And then this is a
Keep my eye on the ball. Keep my eye on the prize. Oh, straight arm. Oh, oh my, oh my goodness. Oh, 27 yards. I'll take it. That's taller than me. Bend the arm like a chicken wing. Keep left arm straight. Hand over. Okay. All right. Oh, and she hits! That was further than my last one. Oh my goodness. There's no competing here. Do experiences like that make you miss playing golf professionally?
Well, I never played professionally, but a lot.
Didn't you almost go pro?
No, no.
You played in leagues though, and like—
It's a very humbling sport.
He's being humble.
No, it's—
He went pro.
No, I did not.
I like to do something at night called the closing shift, and that is just going throughout the house and putting away any dishes or just cleaning up around so that in the morning I wake up to a clean house. And that kind of brings me to my last point, and that is one of the other ways that I indirectly, directly support Mike is just making home a place where he wants to be and making it clean, inviting. Ain't nobody want to live in a messy house, you know what I'm saying? Imagine if he came home from a stressful day and the house was a mess, and that would just kind of add more mental stress. So— We don't want stress! We don't want stress, no. No stress allowed! And with that, hopefully you guys got something out of this video. Wanted to show a good balance of what a real work day for Mike looks like along with a fun little date night sprinkled in there. It is really nice having a guaranteed time at the end of the day where we know we're going to come together, talk about our day, and spend some quality time together. So anyways, I absolutely love being married to an entrepreneur. I would have it no other way, and I'm so, so very incredibly blessed and thankful for him and what our life looks like. Although it's crazy, like Living in Texas for six months—that's insane. It's like such a really cool opportunity, and I'm very, very thankful and blessed for it. Put some questions in the comments if there's like something you always wondered about entrepreneurial couples or anything you are just curious about. Put it in the comments, and I would love to answer it whether it's through the comments or make a whole video on it. That would be super duper fun. So anyways, good night, you guys. Have a great week. See you soon. Bye.
