Mike Minutes Mastermind 06/30/2023

Mike Andes provides a weekly "Mike Minutes" update focused on franchise operations and product development. Key themes: experimenting with performance-based compensation and profit-sharing for general managers (aiming to incentivize GMs earlier, in years 1–2), prioritizing P4P web/software feature development and Copilot integration over building a separate mobile manager app, a personnel update about Terence moving to the Concord location as GM (to address transportation after an accident), and upcoming feature rollouts and franchisee training in July.

All right, I think we got a couple questions that came in so let me.
Get that rolling.
Perfect. All right.

And rock and roll.
Cool. Quick little update in the next couple weeks I might have some updates. I was talking with Chuck last night just about overall looking at a lot of the locations have multiple locations and really just looking at general managers and just how important they are to the functionality of a location and keeping them engaged and on the team for a long period of time. So he and I were talking a lot about like different ways of compensation, different way of looking at profit sharing for general managers, etc. So we're going to be testing a few things. I'll let you know is kind of we cement things and what we're doing but overall just making sure that there's a lot more.
Performance based metrics for the GM and making sure it's more about distributable cash to the owner instead of just profit on a P L. So all of that to say I'll have a lot more details in that in the next couple weeks. We're just kind of spitballing him and I and trying to figure out what would be best. We really want to give more incentive financially to the GMs in those first one or or two years when the location might not be as profitable. And so we have some ideas. We've seen a lot of general managers or a lot of franchisees that have multiple locations struggle with getting their first general manager up and running and being incentivized and staying on long term. So we have some pretty good ideas. I think that will work really well and we're just trying to iron those out and then we'll test them at my locations and run by Those general managers, etc. So couple updates probably coming in a couple weeks since I know that that has been it is the number one reason why success location does succeeds or fails is the general manager and so trying to make sure they're incentivized prior to profit sharing. That usually happens more in years two and three is important to make sure you retain them. Kyle Tarvin Does P4P have an app for managers to be able to update time cards, add bonuses, et cetera? It'd be really nice to have it instead of having to do it on a computer every time. We are ways away from doing this like a long ways because as soon as we split it into a mobile app, it's like two different developers split the code and it becomes two very different pieces of software. And so I would much rather focus my time right now on development of new features, integration with copilot, etc. Instead of trying to split the team and then like double our cost of development and just because we had the mobile device. So this is a very, very long ways to walk and that is a mobile app for the manager to like edit time cards and things. I know it sounds simple, but we would slow down the rate of new features. And right now that's what I'm mostly focused on, especially the integration to Copilot, a bunch of stuff I want to do better with projects, reporting and then really going Back to the 3D notifications once we have the integration with Copilot because there's so much more data we can pull creating a live dashboard on the mobile device. There's just a ton of stuff I want to do. So that will all be prioritized above making a mobile app for the manager.
Ken from Michigan. Can we get an update on Terrence? I think I can speak for everyone that we want him to succeed. Eight kids and moving from the state. A lot of people in the comments are saying that he fired him because he wrecked P2I careless if people are saying in the comments he is the general manager at the Concord location for now. And that is because that is significantly closer, like 70% closer than it was for the south park location. And he had already signed a 12 month lease there. And so to facilitate the fact that transportation was gonna be a problem for him at the beginning, we just went ahead and moved him up to that location due to the fact that literally within minutes of that accident that was in Concord.
The general manager there at one of our locations that was kind of underperforming. He gave his two tons. So it sort of worked out for that perfectly. And then my Chandler's lives closer to south park, so it kind of worked out well. And then just really again it's up to the general manager in terms of whether or not they make a location. 16 it's going to be someone who hustles and grinds and is willing to do that, that will make a location do well and will learn the most, grow the fastest, etc. And so really what I'm working with Chuck, is how do we incentivize that more in year one versus it just being really the GM role being mostly a profit sharing game. And that usually doesn't kick in until years two and three. So all that say, it'll be up to Terence to take the opportunity there and turn it into something. And I cannot necessarily make a general manager or any employee have a desire to succeed or a desire to push and go above and beyond. So you give them the opportunity, you see what they got, and let them run with it. So in terms of what people are saying in the comments, I could really care less.
All right, let's see what else we got here. That's it. Oh, no. Okay. Well, there's your Friday mastermind.
Yeah, we're going to quite a bit on copilot stuff right now. Next week, we got several features that are very critical to Augusta coming in, and then the week after that, we have franchisee training for the new cohort in July. And then.
Next week we will also, if not tomorrow, actually, I'll probably have the form that if you would like to be on the Franchise Advisory Council, you'll need to put your name on that if you'd want to be on for on the ballot. So I will send that out. It'll be a week where you can put your name in, and then I will submit another form for everyone that has everyone's name who wants to be on the ballot that you can vote on to be in the Franchise Advisory Council. So that's the plan. I'll give you more updates probably, if not tomorrow, Sunday, and on my way back, I'll be able to work on that. So. All right, guys, have a good one. Take care.
